bulletin Newsletter from the EABH 2/2006 European Association for Banking and Financial History e.V. Editorial Dear Colleagues, Money- everybody’s talking about, everybody wants it! In this 18th edition of the EABH Bulletin, we examine money and banking in a variety of forms- from the pre-banking world of a Mennonite set- tler in Russia who struggled to survive without the convenience of modern financial services, to banking in Central Africa in the interwar period; we inspect the creation of savings banks in Tsarist controlled Lithuania and look at the development of economic nationalism in Central East Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We also examine the magnificently simple financial inven- tion- the bond, which enabled cross-border money-lending, and we take a look at an informative anthology of Greek banknotes which trace the history of modern Greece. We also take a look at the marvellous architectural creations designed by Norman Forster, and dedicated to the housing of money. Although one normally associates money with a certain coldness and frigidness- it is seen as im- personal and without character- money has a lot to do with identity and belonging. Indeed, money is an essential motivation for people to live together in a social setting. While the basic functions of money are stability, measurement and exchange, money also has a cultural function. The ways people in a small town, city, country or pan-national political system handle (and mishandle) money offers a deep insight into cultural practices. This cultural character is related to the deep symbolism of money.

The history of exhibitions: beyond the white cube ideology (second part) Course on Contemporary Art and Culture MACBA, Autumn 2010 “““Westkunst.“Westkunst. Zeitgenössische Kunst seit 19391939”””” (1981) “““V“VVVonon hier aus. Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst in DüsDüsseldorfseldorfseldorf”””” (1984) Kasper König October 25 ththth 2010, 19 h MACBA Auditorium From an iinterviewnterview with Kasper König (KK) by Noemi Smolik (NS)(NS) “NS: Your first big show after your return to Germany was ‘Westkunst’. What was the exhibition's intention, and why that title, which some thought presumptuous? KK: The title was a pun on the word Weltkunst [World art], and was meant as a conscious distortion of the kind of imperial ideology that we now consider old-fashioned. In addition, insofar as it evoked what then had been the reality of Europe since 1939 –-the division into West and East–- it had a contemporary, political meaning as well as a historical one. So the focus suggested by the title wasn't some kind of ‘regionalism’. The focus of ‘Westkunst’ was artistic innovation; the artwork was at the center. (...) NS: Your next exhibition, ‘von hier aus’, focused on art of the '80s. What criteria informed your selection? KK: ‘Von hier aus’ had its ironic side. I had signed a contract to produce an exhibition of West German art, and had to do it quite fast. But the way the problem was posed seemed dubious to me: I wanted to avoid a nationalist viewpoint completely. I had a lot of space –-an industrial building of over 100,000 square feet. So I had the idea of an imaginary city.
