Wrestling DIVISION I Highlights Iowa captures Division I wrestling title in dominating fashion: The Iowa Hawkeyes finished in style, outdistancing the field at the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships by 44½ points in winning a third straight national title and 23rd overall since 1975. “It’s a lot more fun and it’s a lot more fun with the gap, the point spread, strings of victories, seniors going out the way they should,” Iowa coach Tom Brands said. “There’s a lot more to be content about as far as feeling good that there was a good job done. There was a good job done over the last three days for sure.” Iowa had five in the finals, crowned a trio of champions - redshirt-freshman Matt McDonough and seniors Brent Metcalf and Jay Borschel - and totaled eight All-Americans in amassing 134½ points. Cornell, led by national champion Kyle Dake at 141, finished a solid second with 90 points. Iowa State (75), Wisconsin (70½), Oklahoma (69) and Oklahoma State (65) rounded out the top six in the three-day tournament, which drew just more than 94,000 fans. The Outstanding Wrestler Award went to Minnesota senior Jayson Ness, a four-time All-American who finished his career with a title at 133 pounds. Ness (30-0) claimed gold with a four-point move in the final 10 seconds to beat Iowa’s Dan Dennis, 6-4. The Gopher, who lost in the 2008 NCAA finals at 125, trailed 4-2 and took an injury timeout right before turning a duck-under into a bear hug that finished with Dennis on his back.

DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2015 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2015 CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGHLIGHTS Logan Stieber joined an exclusive club at the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The senior 141-pounder for Ohio State beat Edinboro’s Mitchell Port, 11-5, on March 21 to win a fourth national title and become just the fourth wrestler in NCAA history to accomplish that feat. “This is something I have dreamed about since I came to Ohio State,” said Stieber, who finished 29-0 this season and a 119-3 career for the Buckeyes. “To finally do it is unbelievable.” Two slick first-period takedowns built a small cushion. Stieber scored another takedown and took a 7-2 lead and 2:38 of riding time to the final two minutes of his collegiate career. A double-leg midway through the third made it 10-2. Port (36-2), also a senior, made one last push by scoring a late takedown, but it was too little, too late as the capacity crowd at Scottrade Center in St. Louis came to its feet and gave Stieber a standing ovation. Following the tournament the Outstanding Wrestler Award also belonged to Stieber. Stieber is the leader of a Buckeye squad that claimed the program’s first team title. Ohio State totaled 102 points, 16 more than second place Iowa. Edinboro, at 75.5, finished a program-best third, with Missouri, Cornell and Penn State rounding out the top six. Stieber’s teammate, freshman Nathan Tomasello, opened his collegiate career with a national title at 125 pounds.

DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2017 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2017 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State wins sixth title in seven years: The Penn State wrestling team left no doubt to its dominance, rolling to a perfect 5-0 record in the 2017 NCAA Championships finals. The stunning run capped off Penn State’s team title performance in St. Louis’ Scottrade Center. Penn State, under the guidance of head coach Cael Sanderson, claimed its sixth NCAA team title in the last seven years, its second straight and its seventh overall. Penn State also tied the NCAA record with five individual national champions becoming the fourth team in NCAA history and the first since Oklahoma State in 2005. The Nittany Lions won the title with a school record 146.5 points, 36.5 points ahead of second place Ohio State. Oklahoma State was third with 103.0. Penn State’s seven team titles are fourth all-time in NCAA history. Sanderson now has six NCAA team titles as a head coach, tied for fifth all-time. Junior Zain Retherford, the No. 1 seed at 149 pounds, took on No. 3 Lavion Mayes of Missouri in the first of five straight NCAA finals match-ups featuring Penn State wrestlers to close out the championships. Mayes fought off a quick early shot by Retherford and then took a 2-0 lead with a fast double leg at the 2:33 mark. Retherford quickly escaped to a 2-1 score and took the lead with a low single to a takedown at the 1:40 mark.
