Hamlin is also ranked No. 1 in the nation by InterMat. 5 ARCHIVES COLON BURSTS ONTO THE SCENE AT MIDLANDS Redshirt sophomore Joe Colon placed seventh at Midlands. Colon was unranked in the 133-pound bracket coming into the tournament, yet topped two rated opponents before losing in the consolation bracket quarterfinal. Colon then came back and defeated another nationally-ranked wrestler, pinning Steven Keith of Harvard (No. 9) and capturing the seventh-place finish. One of Colon’s earlier victories was over nationally-ranked Bryan Ortenzio of Penn, ranked No. 13 by InterMat. In the latest InterMat rankings, Colon is rated No. 12 in the 133-pound weight class. The former NJCAA national champion was not rated up until this week, having only competed in one open tournament after overcoming an early-season injury. FIVE PANTHERS EARN TOP FINISHES AT JIM FOX OPEN Five members of the UNI wrestling team took home first place finishes after competing at the Jim Fox Open Dec. 17. Joe Colon (133), Adam Perrin (141), Jarrett Jensen (157), Cody Caldwell (174) and Cody Krumwiede (285) each captured championships in their respective weight classes. All twelve Panther wrestlers who competed at the Jim Fox Open placed in the top six in their divisions.

EX-UNI WRESTLER QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS Former UNI wrestler Moza Fay qualified to compete at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22. Fay earned a spot in the field after a strong performance at the Men’s Freestyle Olympic Trials Qualifier, held in Las Vegas Dec. 3. A two-time All-American, Fay capped his Panther career in 2009 totaling 119 wins, the program’s seventh-best mark. The Anamosa, Iowa-native was named Western Wrestling Conference “Wrestler of the Year” twice.

COLON MAKES HIS SEASON DEBUT AT JIM FOX OPEN Redshirt sophomore Joe Colon overcame an injury and competed for the first time this season at the Jim Fox Open Dec. 17. Colon breezed through his opponents, taking first place in the 133-pound division with two pins and a tech fall. As a freshman at Iowa Central Community College, Colon won the 2010 NJCAA National Championship at 125 pounds. He was also named the tournament’s “Outstanding Wrestler.”

PANTHERS LEAVE IOWA CITY WITH 38-4 DUAL LOSS The UNI wrestling squad lost to the No. 1-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (5-0, 1-0 B10) by a score of 38-4 at Carver- Hawkeye Arena Thurs., Dec. 8. Sophomore Ryan Loder provided the only victory for the Panthers in this dual match, improving his perfect season record to 16-0. Sophomore Ryan Loder provided the only victory for the Panthers in this dual match, improving his perfect season record to 16-0. PANTHERS HOIST TWO CHAMPS AT UNI OPEN David Bonin captured the 157-pound title, and Ryan Loder continued his undefeated season, claiming the 184-pound championship at the 59th UNI Open Sat., Dec. 3. Bonin capped off his title run with an 11-6 decision over South Dakota State’s Nick Flynn. The junior was 5-0 at the end of the tournament, improving his overall season record to 14-3. Loder cruised through the 184-pound bracket, finishing the UNI Open with a 13-3 major decision over Mitchell Schultz of Upper Iowa. The sophomore racked up two pins and a technical fall in addition to his major decision. Loder is now 15-0 this season. 6 ARCHIVES PANTHERS FINISH 1-2 AT NORTHEAST DUALS UNI fell to No. 21 Central Michigan and No. 12 Maryland then defeated Bucknell at the Northeast Duals Nov. 26. It was the Panthers’ first action of the 2011-12 dual season. Ryan Loder (184) was the lone Panther to go undefeated. The sophomore’s most notable win came against No. 9-ranked Ben Bennett. Loder improved his overall season record to 11-0. LODER NAMED WWC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK For the fourth time in his short career, sophomore Ryan Loder was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week Nov. 29. The California-native won all three of his matches at the Northeast Duals Nov. 26, including a 3-1 decision over No. 9-ranked Ben Bennett of Central Michigan. Loder is currently ranked No. 7 at 184 pounds. FOURTEEN PANTHERS PLACE AT COBBER OPEN Fourteen of UNI’s seventeen competitors placed in the upper division at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open Nov. 19. Three of those places were championships as Ryan Jauch (133), Tanner Hiatt (149) and Ryan Loder (184) took home first-place finishes for their respective weight classes.

TWO CHAMPS CROWNED AT HAROLD NICHOLS OPEN Junior David Bonin (157) and sophomore Ryan Loder (184)claimed championships in their respective weight classes at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open Nov. 13. Bonin went 5-0 for the day, ending with a 7-2 decision over Quinten Haynes (unattached). Loder went 4-0 for the day, ending with a 4-1 deci- sion over St. Cloud State’s Derek Skala.

FIVE CHAMPIONS EMERGE AT LORAS OPEN UNI wrestling boasted five individual championships and one runner-up finish at the Loras Open Nov. 5.
