4 seasideOR.com pocket garden walking tour While enjoying Broadway, you may notice the patches of flowers planted along the sidewalk — all bursting with color, no matter the season. These “pocket gardens,” as they’re called, are a large part of downtown Seaside’s inviting charm. The 100 or so pocket gardens — some big, some small — fill spaces along Broadway as well as on Holladay Drive and Columbia Street between Avenue A and First Avenue. There’s a rhyme and reason for every annual, every perennial, every herb and every grass in these gardens, planted, designed and maintained by local landscaper Pamela Fleming and her small team. Here’s how to start enjoying the beauty. As you depart the Visitors Bureau at Highway 101 and Broadway, cross the highway and walk down Broadway toward the ocean. You’ll be strolling through the historic Gilbert District, the oldest remaining part of downtown Seaside.

Ecola State Park Whale Watching At any point along the Oregon Coast — and especially anytime you make your way up to a bluff, sea cliff or headland — take a moment to cast your eyes out across the ocean horizon. You may just spot one of the roughly 20,000 migrating gray whales swimming offshore, not to mention the occasional dolphin, porpoise, seal, sea lion or any number of seabirds. Gray whales generally make their way down the coast from their feeding grounds in Alaska to their breeding grounds in Baja California, Mexico, from mid-December through January. Then from late March through June, these graceful creatures, which can grow as long as 50 feet (15.2 m), return north. During peak periods — the week after Christmas and the last week of March — Oregon’s excellent Whale Watching Spoken Here program places volunteers at 24 sites along the coast to assist curious onlookers in seeing whales for themselves. Key points within an hour’s drive of Seaside include Ecola State Park, Neahkahnie Mountain Historic Marker on U.S. 101, Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, Cape Kiwanda and Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center (just across the Columbia River in Washington). These are also prime perches for viewing wildlife any time of the year. From top: From Don Bailie Justin Frank;
