The company manufactures small arms and machine guns for all branches of the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Ministries of Defense and Ministries of Interior of allied nations. U.S. Ordnance specializes in producing new, enhanced versions of the mature, combat-proven Mk43/M60E4 and M2, making and testing them according to U.S. military technical specifications and instructions. The company's primary weapon systems are the M2HB, M2A2 (QCB), the Mk43/M60E4, the M60D Enhanced and the M16/M4/M203, all of which are NATO sanctioned. The company also provides training services for machine gun operators and armorers. Every U.S. Ordnance-made gun consists of about 300 parts and entails roughly 1,200 individual processes. U.S. Ordnance is in the opportune position of experiencing a significant increase in demand, both from existing and new customers. In 2017, the Company signed its largest contract in its 20 years of business and also secured another multi-year U.S. Department of Defense contract valid until 2023. These two significant contracts along with the increased volume of orders require additional expansion of the McCarran, Nevada operations. While plans to address the operational needs began in the summer of 2017, the considerable expansions will begin in October 2017. Equipment replacements and purchases and an addition of 10 employees are being evaluated. Thus, U.S. Ordnance is applying for the Sales and Use, Modified Business, and Personal Property Tax Abatements. The projected necessary capital investment is approximately $2.8 million with a potential up to $3 million. The AK-47, for example, is actually no more lethal than most other small arms in its class, but popular notoriety and Hollywood representations tend to credit it with superior power and lethality. Similarly, the bayonet actually killed relatively few men in World War I, but the sheer thought of an enraged foe bearing down on you with more than 30cm of sharpened steel was the stuff of nightmares to both sides. In some cases, however, fear has been perfectly justified. During both world wars, for example, artillery caused between 59 and 80 per cent of all casualties (depending on your source), and hence took a justifiable top slot in surveys of most feared tools of violence. The subjects of this book – the MG 34 and MG 42, plus derivatives – are interesting case studies within the scale of soldiers’ fears. Regarding the latter weapon, a US wartime information movie once declared that the gun’s ‘bark was worse than its bite’, no doubt a well-intentioned comment intended to reduce mounting concern among US troops about the firepower of this astonishing gun.
