The Sally Ride Science Junior Academy offers fascinating and fun learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) designed for students entering grades 4 through 12 during the 2019-2020 school year. During these classes and workshops, students assume the roles of space explorer, ocean engineer or computer scientist as they immerse themselves in hands-on projects.

Top-notch STEAM instructors lead these classes and workshops, serving as both teachers and role models. The classes and workshops also incorporate real-life stories of vibrant women conducting research in each field. Their examples inspire students and help make STEAM careers more accessible.

Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ph.D., Executive Director Tam is cofounder and executive director of Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego. She grew up in California and played professional tennis from 1971 to 1974. She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology from Georgia State University. After receiving her Ph.D. in school psychology from UC Riverside, she became a professor in that field at San Diego State University. Tam was the life partner of Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space. In 2001 Sally and Tam joined with three friends Maysoon Dong, Program Manager to found Sally Ride Science. Tam served as the company’s chief creative officer and later as chief Maysoon is a program manager for UC San Diego Extension’s Pre-College and Career Preparation operating officer, chair of the Board of Directors, and chief executive officer. Tam has written 14 Programs. She has worked for UC San Diego in a variety of different capacities for over 7 years. children’s books, including six with Sally. Prior to working with UC San Diego Extension, she was the assistant director of the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) program at the Jacobs School Edward Abeyta, Ph.D., Director of Pre-College Programs & Associate Dean, UC San Diego Extension of Engineering. She also worked in the Division of Biological Sciences as a program coordinator, developing and maintaining continuing education programs for professionals in the field of Dr. Edward Abeyta was recently appointed as the associate dean for Community Engagement and biotechnology. Maysoon received her B.A. in mathematics and economics from UC San Diego director, Pre-Collegiate and Career Preparations Programs at UC San Diego (UCSD) Extension. Prior and received her M.S. in economics from Boston University to joining UCSD Extension in 1995, Edward began his service at UC San Diego as a counselor for the Early Academic Outreach Program serving underrepresented students in San Diego high schools and later assumed the role of registrar and director of Academic Services at UC San Diego Extension. Dan Velazquez, Program Representative Edward has a B.A. from the University of New Mexico, M.A. from the University of San Diego and Dan joined the UC San Diego Pre-College and Career Preparation Programs office in January 2014. his Ph.D. in Post Secondary Adult Education from Capella University. Edward has been recognized Dan graduated from UC San Diego with a B.A. in psychology, and has aspirations of pursuing a master’s from UCSD and the UC Office of the President for his involvement in staff diversity and development degree in postsecondary educational leadership. Dan served as a resident assistant for the Academic initiatives. In 2008 Edward was selected to a two-year term as the Staff Advisor to The Regents. He Connections Program in 2011. Megan Lancaster, Program Manager Megan is a program manager for UC San Diego Extension’s Pre-College and Career Preparation Programs, where she focuses on planning, implementing and evaluating academic and enrichment Margaret King, Writer/Editor programs to meet the individual needs of students in preparation of collegiate and professional Margaret was senior science editor and writer at Sally Ride Science from 2009 to 2015, when pursuits. Prior to working with UC San Diego Extension, Megan served as the program supervisor for Sally Ride Science became part of UC San Diego. Margaret helped create books and teacher the Viejas Tribal Education Center and also taught grades K-12 in the local public and private school guides that presented science concepts and profiled notable scientists with the goal of districts. Megan received a B.A. in social science from San Diego State University and a Single- awakening students’ interest in science careers. This will provide you and your student the opportunity to complete all requirements and pick up materials prior to the first day of classes and workshops. There are two days and times available. CODE OF CONDUCT Good behavior will be encouraged in a positive manner. The staff will work cooperatively with parents and guardians, keeping them informed of behavior concerns and methods used to teach and guide students toward socially acceptable behavior, which include: • Strive to do the best work possible. • Tolerate and respect individuals of different races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual orientations, disabilities and national origins. • Behave in a friendly, cooperative and responsible manner toward all persons in the program and extended programs and in the larger local communities. If a behavior incident does occur, the following protocol will be followed: 1. A Junior Academy staff member and the student will discuss the student’s behavior and collaboratively work on a positive plan moving forward. The staff member will document the incident, conversation and forward plan. 2. A Junior Academy staff member and the student will discuss the student’s behavior and contact the parent or guardian immediately. The staff member will inform the parent of the prior occurrence and if there is a third incident, the student will be removed from Junior Academy and a refund will not be provided. 3. A Junior Academy staff member and the student will discuss the student’s behavior and contact the parent or guardian immediately. The parent will be notified they need to pick up their student immediately and that the student will be taken off the workshop schedule without a refund.

HARASSMENT POLICY Sally Ride Science is committed to having a positive learning environment. Furthermore, all students and staff of the Sally Ride Science Junior Academy program have the right to an environment free of harassment or violence of any type. Because of this, the following will not be tolerated: • Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal, visual, written or physical conduct of a sexual nature, which create an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational/social environment for students, faculty or staff. Sexual harassment is demeaning and degrading. It affects an individual’s self-esteem and can have a negative impact on performance. It can make an individual feel angry, powerless and fearful. Considering this, a victim should share their feelings/concern with a Sally Ride Science instructor or staff member immediately. • Bullying harassment includes, but is not limited to, any kind of comment, threat or action that creates an intimidating or hostile atmosphere. Every student has the right to pursue an education without being concerned about physical, verbal or emotional abuse. • Physical harassment includes, but is not limited to, any kind of physical violence, intimidation, threat or harassment directed toward any Sally Ride Science participant, instructor, staff member or any other individual. Any allegation of harassment at UC San Diego or at any Sally Ride Science related activity during the program will be investigated, and disciplinary action will be taken if allegations prove to be factual.
