The Sally Ride Science Junior Academy offers fascinating and fun learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) designed for students entering grades 4 through 12 during the 2019-2020 school year. During these classes and workshops, students assume the roles of space explorer, ocean engineer or computer scientist as they immerse themselves in hands-on projects. Top-notch STEAM instructors lead these classes and workshops, serving as both teachers and role models. The classes and workshops also incorporate real-life stories of vibrant women conducting research in each field. Their examples inspire students and help make STEAM careers more accessible. 4 | Sally Ride Science JUNIOR ACADEMY 2019 PARENT AND STUDENT HANDBOOK Sally Ride Science JUNIOR ACADEMY 2019 | 5 @ UC SAN DIEGO OURMEET CULTURE YOUR TEAM Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ph.D., Executive Director Tam is cofounder and executive director of Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego. She grew up in California and played professional tennis from 1971 to 1974. She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology from Georgia State University. After receiving her Ph.D. in school psychology from UC Riverside, she became a professor in that field at San Diego State University. Tam was the life partner of Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space. In 2001 Sally and Tam joined with three friends Maysoon Dong, Program Manager to found Sally Ride Science. Tam served as the company’s chief creative officer and later as chief Maysoon is a program manager for UC San Diego Extension’s Pre-College and Career Preparation operating officer, chair of the Board of Directors, and chief executive officer. Tam has written 14 Programs. She has worked for UC San Diego in a variety of different capacities for over 7 years. children’s books, including six with Sally. Prior to working with UC San Diego Extension, she was the assistant director of the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) program at the Jacobs School Edward Abeyta, Ph.D., Director of Pre-College Programs & Associate Dean, UC San Diego Extension of Engineering. She also worked in the Division of Biological Sciences as a program coordinator, developing and maintaining continuing education programs for professionals in the field of Dr. Edward Abeyta was recently appointed as the associate dean for Community Engagement and biotechnology. Maysoon received her B.A. in mathematics and economics from UC San Diego director, Pre-Collegiate and Career Preparations Programs at UC San Diego (UCSD) Extension. Prior and received her M.S. in economics from Boston University to joining UCSD Extension in 1995, Edward began his service at UC San Diego as a counselor for the Early Academic Outreach Program serving underrepresented students in San Diego high schools and later assumed the role of registrar and director of Academic Services at UC San Diego Extension. Dan Velazquez, Program Representative Edward has a B.A. from the University of New Mexico, M.A. from the University of San Diego and Dan joined the UC San Diego Pre-College and Career Preparation Programs office in January 2014. his Ph.D. in Post Secondary Adult Education from Capella University. Edward has been recognized Dan graduated from UC San Diego with a B.A. in psychology, and has aspirations of pursuing a master’s from UCSD and the UC Office of the President for his involvement in staff diversity and development degree in postsecondary educational leadership. Dan served as a resident assistant for the Academic initiatives. In 2008 Edward was selected to a two-year term as the Staff Advisor to The Regents. He Connections Program in 2011. As the program representative, Dan is responsible for coordinating the UC San Diego LAUNCH undergraduate program, Academic Connections Research Scholars and Studies, Test Prep courses (ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT and MCAT) and Transfer credit courses. Megan Lancaster, Program Manager Megan is a program manager for UC San Diego Extension’s Pre-College and Career Preparation Programs, where she focuses on planning, implementing and evaluating academic and enrichment Margaret King, Writer/Editor programs to meet the individual needs of students in preparation of collegiate and professional Margaret was senior science editor and writer at Sally Ride Science from 2009 to 2015, when pursuits. Prior to working with UC San Diego Extension, Megan served as the program supervisor for Sally Ride Science became part of UC San Diego. Margaret helped create books and teacher the Viejas Tribal Education Center and also taught grades K-12 in the local public and private school guides that presented science concepts and profiled notable scientists with the goal of districts. Megan received a B.A. in social science from San Diego State University and a Single- awakening students’ interest in science careers. Parents or other approved adults must park to sign students out at the end of each One-week course: July 22–26 day, unless students are granted self check-out as indicated by the parent on the authorization form. Please allow ample time for parking so your student can get to the academy on time. Free parking is available in student parking lot. Please follow all EARLY DROP-OFF AND LATE PICK-UP designated parking rules, as violators may be towed. ABSENCES SESSION 8–9 AM 3:30–5:00 PM If your student is not going to attend their scheduled workshop for the day, please report this absence by calling the SRS Junior Four-week courses: June 24–July 19 $180 $270 Academy office at 858-822-8194 or emailing [email protected]. If a student is absent on the first day and this absence is not Two-week course: July 8–19 $100 $150 reported to SRS, they will be dropped from their workshop(s) and no refund will be provided.
