Livestock Research Report 940; 84 pp. De moderne commerciële veehouderij maakt gebruik van pijnlijke ingrepen voor runderen, schapen, geiten, paarden, varkens en pluimvee. Dit rapport analyseert wettelijke en niet wettelijke initiatieven (vanuit overheid en markt) om ingrepen te reduceren in de EU. Succesvolle en minder succesvolle voorbeelden werden geïdentificeerd, en leiden tot zes algemene aanbevelingen ter bevordering van het terugdringen van ingrepen: er moet een gevoel van urgentie zijn, overeen gekomen regels vereisen handhaving, technische oplossingen zijn nodig voor technische problemen, een 'vangnet' moet risico’s verkleinen, commitment moet worden gedeeld door alle betrokken ketenpartners en als wetgeving tekort schiet, kan de markt het verschil maken. Conventional livestock production involves mutilations of animals. This report analyses legislative and non-legislative initiatives (by governments as well as the market) in the EU to reduce these practices in cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs and poultry. Successful and less successful examples were identified, and lead to six general recommendations: there needs to be a sense of urgency, agreed rules require enforcement, technical solutions are required to technical problems, ‘safety nets’ are needed to reduce risks, commitment needs to be shared by all chain partners involved and if legislation is unlikely to be successful, the market may help to make a change. © 2016 Wageningen UR Livestock Research, P.O. Six animal-based measures were evaluated for use as ewe welfare indicators: body condition score, fleece condition, skin lesions, tail length, dag score and lameness. Over the course of this study, the main welfare issues were poor nutrition (under and over feeding), mortality, lameness, ecto-parasites (flystrike) and mastitis. All of these issues can arise from, and be treated by, management practices. Along with management strategies, reproductive stage, breed and region all affected animal welfare, but farm size did not. Farmers had very positive views on the importance of the welfare of their ewes.

A large range of husbandry procedures and recommendations for pain relief are addressed. Pain is a complex phenomenon involving pathophysiological and psychological components that are frequently difficult to recognise and interpret in animals. Pain is an aversive sensory and emotional experience associated with an awareness of damage or threat to the integrity of the animal’s tissues, normally changing its physiology and behaviour to reduce or avoid damage, reducing the likelihood of recurrence and promoting recovery. In the scientific assessment of pain the optimum approach is to select multiple independent measurements.
