Thomas Sidney Cooper was an English painter noted for his fine detailed images of cattle and sheep in extensive pastoral landscapes. He was born at Canterbury in and from a small child showed strong artistic inclinations. At the age of twelve he was working in the shop of a coach painter and later on in his youth he worked as a scene painter. He left for London and drew extensively in the , then entering the Royal Academy Schools. He returned to Canterbury and took up teaching as a drawing master. In 1827 he settled in Brussels and married. It was here that he met the celebrated animal painter Eugene Joseph Verboeckhoven who had a large influence on his work. He left Brussels at the start of the revolution returning to London and exhibited his first painting at the R.A. in 1833. He went on to paint numerous works largely on the same theme his 266 R.A. exhibits shown without a break till 1902. After about 1870 his commissions were constant and very lucrative making him a wealthy man and in consequence a generous benefactor to the city of Canterbury. Between 1847 and 1870 Cooper collaborated on a number of works with the landscape painter R.A., Cooper adding animals to complete the scene. His studio sale at Christies lasted three days! 90 392 Pieter Cornelis Dommersen [1834-1908] ‘On the Scheldt’, a breezy day with a sailing boat embarking from a jetty, a fisherman’s cottage and figures in the foreground signed and dated P C Dommersen 1869 bottom right, also inscribed with title on a label on reverse oil on canvas 39.5 x 59.5cm £4000 - 6000

93 94 400 Andrew Carrick Gow [1848-1920] A Roman Triumph signed A C Gow and dated 1905 bottom right exhibition labels on reverse, one giving artists address as 30, Grove End Road, London oil on canvas 90 x 182cm £10000 - 15000

Notes. This magnificent “tour de force” painting by Gow depicts a Roman Triumph processing through the Arch of Titus; you can just make out the Coliseum in the background, the main temple (the large columns of which you can clearly see) is quite possibly that of the very large Venus and Roma. The route of all Imperial Triumphs, from around the end of the Flavian Dynasty, came in through this way (up the Via Sacra), so identifying the specific Emperor in the work requires further research. The Arch of Titus depicts the spoils from the Siege of Jerusalem and was erected by Domitian around 82AD, shortly after the death of his older brother Titus, in order to commemorate Titus’s victories including that of the Siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

We are grateful to Freddie Scadgell B.A., M.A. for his help in cataloguing this lot.

Marshalls was a house located in Romford in the parish of Havering, now the north eastern extremity of Greater London. The property dates back to 1213 when Gilbert, son of Roger Marescall, is recorded as leasing land in Havering to the Augustine Canons of the Hospice of St Bernard in Switzerland, and in 1321 Richard le Marescall owned land near the eventual site of the house. In the 14th century the land passed to the Carew family until about 1610 when the land is recorded as belonging to a ‘gentleman named Thorowgood’, and in 1694 it was leased to Thomas Scawen, but then sold in 1704 to Russell Alsopp. When Allsopp died he was considerably in debt to Sir William Scawen [who was Governor of The Bank of England 1697-1699] and there followed a lengthy legal battle over ownership of the property. On 1748 Marshalls passed from John Leigh to Mary Frost and later to Jackson Barwis who was High Sherriff of Essex for 1796. In 1815 the house was bought by local banker Rowland Stephenson of the bank Remington, Stephenson & Company. During his time Marshalls was described as ‘princely’, but Stephenson, MP for Leominster, had embezzled the bank of nearly half a million pounds and fled the country in 1828! Marshalls was situated where the playground of the current St Edwards C of E Primary school is now, and was demolished in 1959 as it was ‘not of historical or architectural importance’.
