Wacher of Canterbury Thence by family descent to the present owner. We are grateful to Kenneth J. Westwood in helping with the cataloguing of this lot. Thomas Sidney Cooper was an English painter noted for his fine detailed images of cattle and sheep in extensive pastoral landscapes. He was born at Canterbury in Kent and from a small child showed strong artistic inclinations. At the age of twelve he was working in the shop of a coach painter and later on in his youth he worked as a scene painter. He left for London and drew extensively in the British Museum, then entering the Royal Academy Schools. He returned to Canterbury and took up teaching as a drawing master. In 1827 he settled in Brussels and married. It was here that he met the celebrated animal painter Eugene Joseph Verboeckhoven who had a large influence on his work. He left Brussels at the start of the revolution returning to London and exhibited his first painting at the R.A. in 1833. He went on to paint numerous works largely on the same theme his 266 R.A. exhibits shown without a break till 1902. After about 1870 his commissions were constant and very lucrative making him a wealthy man and in consequence a generous benefactor to the city of Canterbury.

  • Military Themes in British Painting 1815 - 1914
/ Military Themes in British Painting 1815 - 1914. Joan Winifred Martin Hichberger. Submission fcr PhD. University College, London. 1985 1 Abstract. Joan Winifred Martin Hichberger. Military Themes in British Painting 1815-1914. This thesis examines the treatment of the Bzitish Army and military themes, in painting, during the period 1815- 1914. All the works discussed were exhibited at the Royal Academy, which, although it underwent modifications in status, remained the nearest equivalent to a State Institution for Art in Britain. All the paintings shown there were painted with the knowledge that they were to be seen by the controllers of the Academy and the dominant classes of society. It will be inferred then, that the paintings shown there may be taken to have been acceptable to ruling class ideologies, and are therefore instructive of "official" attitudes to military art. Representations of the contemporary Army, in this period, fell into two main catagories - battle paintings and genre depictions of soldiers. Chapters one to three survey battle paintings; studying the relation of this genre to the Academy; the relative popularity of the genre and the career patterns of its practioners. The critical reception of battle pictures at the Academy and certain important public competitions will be noted and considered in the context of contemporary ideologies about art and about the Army and its men. Chapter four discusses the vital concept of "heroism" and its treatment in English military art. In particular, the reasons for the popularity of certain military figures above their peers, in academic art, will be explored. It will be argued that the process of "hero-making" in art was not determined by professional success alone, but was often the result of the intervention of patrons, publicists and pressure groups.

British canvas, stretcher and panel suppliers’ marks. Part 8, Charles Roberson & Co This resource surveys suppliers’ marks on the reverse of picture supports. This part is devoted to Charles Roberson, a business founded in 1819 and which grew to become one of the leading companies as Charles Roberson & Co from 1855 and Charles Roberson & Co Ltd from 1908 until 1987. The business was a significant supplier of canvas from about the 1820s until the 1980s. For further information, see British artists' suppliers, 1650-1950 - R on this website. The Roberson archive is housed at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge. Measurements of marks, given where known, are approximate and may vary according to the stretching or later conservation treatment of a canvas or the trimming of a label. Links are given to institutional websites where dimensions of works can be found. Business dates and addresses are usually accurate to within a year. Square brackets are used to indicate indistinct or missing lettering in transcripts, with readings sometimes based on other examples. Compiled by Jacob Simon, September 2017, updated March 2020, and based on the pioneering work of Cathy Proudlove and the suppliers’ database created by Jacob Simon. Although the areas of Old Master drawings, early British drawings and watercolours, 19th Century and Modern drawings have long been regarded as disparate fields, part of the purpose of this annual catalogue is to blur the distinction between these collecting areas. The works we have selected for this catalogue will hopefully show that a fine drawing or watercolour – whoever the artist and whatever the date – is always worthy of note. As the enclosed price list shows, the prices of the drawings in this catalogue are equally broad in scope – from well under £1,000 to around £15,000 – with most of the works at the lower end of this range.

  • Le Pont Du Gard Signed and Dated ‘F.R
Frederick Richard Lee (Barnstable 1798 - Wellington, South Africa 1879) Le Pont du Gard signed and dated ‘F.R. Lee RA 1863’ (lower right) and further signed and inscribed ‘No. 1 Le Pont du Garde- Roman Aquaduct near Nîsmes [sic] F.R. Lee R.A.’ (on an old label on the reverse) oil on canvas 77.5 x 107.2 cm (30½ x 42¼ in) The scale of this ancient structure is forced upon us by Frederick Richard Lee’s use of such a dramatic and fiercely architectural perspective, giving us a vanishing point far into the centre right of his composition. Between the soft trees of nature this behemoth of stone cuts its way, even mighty water seems to trickle beneath it, as it once did upon it; showing nature brought to bear under the hand of the conquering Romans. Lee's expansive painting depicts one of France’s greatest surviving feats of engineering which dates from the early Roman Empire. The Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct crossing the River Gardon near Nîmes in the south of France. Constructed during the Roman Empire, it was long thought that it was built by Augustus’ son-in-law and aide, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in about 19 BC. However, more recent excavations now suggest that the construction took place in the middle of the first century AD. Designed to carry water across the small Gardon river valley, it was part of an aqueduct, nearly 50 km long that brought water from the Fontaines d’Eure springs near Uzès to the Castellum in the Roman city of Nemausus (Nîmes).
