The Golden West College Foundation The Golden West College Foundation was organized in 1986 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the college and its students. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College’s mission of providing comprehensive academic opportunities to the community for lifelong learning. A board of directors, which provides the leadership and direction for the organization’s operation, manages the Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1986 with assets over $8,600,000. This has been accomplished through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The Foundation has provided over $7,800,000 in scholarships to Golden West College students and over $8,400,000 in program support. In addition to cash assets, the Foundation annually receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in non-monetary gifts. The primary focus of the Foundation Board of Directors is to work towards building support for college-wide needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the Foundation provides staff support and direction to two auxiliaries. Each auxiliary, managed by its own board and officers, requires membership dues to cover operational expenses.

GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT The Golden West College Foundation’s mission is to provide resources to support the College for advancing educational opportunities and life-long learning for students.

4 2014 - 2015 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT Report from the Foundation Chair, Steve Olmsted

I am proud to acknowledge and report the efforts of the Foundation Board of Directors and its supporters this past year. The Foundation helped fund over $460,000 in scholarships, the campus Wish List program, an increase in our participation in the STAR Book Reserve Program, and new memberships on the Foundation Board and its auxiliaries – the Patrons, the Hens & Chickens Quilt Fellowship and increased Community Relations.

In April, 2015, the Foundation held its 18th annual Golden West College Gala. We are extremely pleased to have raised over $128,000. The proceeds will benefit Golden West College students and the campus Wish List. We particularly want to thank Elmore Toyota, Union Bank of California, Southern California Edison, Huntington Beach Hospital, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and Schools First Credit Union as major sponsors, as well as all of the underwriters who gave so generously to this event. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and the community at large for continuing to support this very important event. We look forward to continuing this success at our 19th Gala on April 2, 2016 at the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa.

Our 24th annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated on October 22nd, 2015. Three Golden West College Alumni were honored as “alumni Pillar of Achievement” recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, 103 alumni have been recognized. We truly appreciate the generosity and gratitude of the donors who were honored for their various levels of support: Judy Elmore, Premier Pillar ($100,000); Garden Grove Hospital Volunteer Guild, Carol “Dr. G” & Raymond Grimes, Woman’s Club of Huntington Beach, Pillars of Support ($25,000); Jo Ann Anthony, Anne & Lee Gillespie, and Susanne & Rocco Orsini, Golden Society Honorees ($1000 - $24,999).

In closing, I would like to personally thank Golden West College President, Wes Bryan, Foundation Director Bruce Berman, the Board of Directors and those who have provided advice, counsel, professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during this past year. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the community at large, which has continued to support the Foundation and the college with its generosity. Without this dedication, our work would not be possible. The Golden West College Foundation Board and I remain committed to providing the necessary tools and resources, so that more students can succeed. The Foundation’s objectives for 2016 include increasing the Board’s role in fostering student success, expanding Board membership, and continuing a high level of participation from our members. Next year is our 50th anniversary and there will be events all year long beginning in September, 2016 and everyone is invited! For more information, please visit our new website, www.gwchbfoundation.com, which now allows online donations and Foundation event registrations. We also look forward to another successful Gala fundraising event, while continuing to seek fresh ideas for new fundraising opportunities.

The Foundation Board appreciates your support of Golden West College, and we look forward to what the future holds for 2016 as we focus on our goal of enhancing student success.

2014 - 2015 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 5 Message from Golden West College President, Wes Bryan

As you may recall, one of the first new buildings our College built in 2011 with Measure C funds was a new Learning Resources Center (LRC). This building is home to the R. Dudley Boyce Library on the second and third floors. The LRC proudly faces Goldenwest Street at the newly-named “Rustler Way” intersection and a new campus entry way. This new LRC was a sample of things to come, thanks to the generosity of a newer bond (Measure M) and the support of people like you. The College is approaching its 50th anniversary and, with the passage of Measure M, we are ramping up for more change. While writing this note of appreciation to you, I can’t help but feel somewhat nostalgic. I am looking out my office window across the quad, where we have held so many graduation ceremonies in front of our old College library. Huge tractors are removing it chunk by chunk, making room for a new One-Stop Student Center, a full-service hub for all student services. An exciting future is colliding with our rich past. Things are in transition in almost every direction, which is how it should be. At 50, the College has touched the lives of more than a million students, trained more than 5,000 nurses and 10,000 police officers, and given more than 4,000 student performances. Our first graduating class had 86 students and last year we graduated 2,389 students. So this is a year where we catch ourselves reflecting on where we have been these last fifty years. We are working to make changes to ensure even greater opportunities for students for the next 50 years. You too will be able to share in this reflection, as we are planning a variety of festivities for our year-long 50th anniversary celebration. Of course a college is more than its buildings. It’s about people. I like the memories I have associated with the old library. There are many memories we all have with each other and the time we spent at the various events the College holds, such as the Donor Appreciation Night, Chefs for Scholarships, Courtyard of Honor Ceremony, or Graduation. We get to talk with former students and others who used to be at GWC. They say things like, “When I came to this College, I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to be or do – but a counselor, teacher, or fellow classmate got me interested in …. And the magic kick-started me into a career in teaching, auto, business, computers, science, art, digital media….” Or you’ll overhear someone say something like, “I didn’t know anybody, had no friends here, and wasn’t sure how I was going to pay for college, but I knew I wanted to study chemistry, try out for a team or get a part in a play. People encouraged me to join a club, talk with a teacher, apply for a scholarship and after that first semester, I was on my way to what has turned out to be a pretty good life. Now my kids are going to GWC and I know they will get a good start on their educational journey, just like I did.” There is one common theme: the good work we have done together to educate students. These stories are all about students. Some come here with clear goals, drive and all the resources they need to succeed, and we just have to get out of their way. Others have very little of that or may have almost lost hope, but we offer a helping hand, a map to a better way of life. These stories can be told, and these facilities can be rebuilt, and labs renewed because of your ongoing support. Many of you are giving back to the College because you were or someone you know was a student here. You may give because we serve the cities you live in. However, many give because they know that investing in education is a gift that creates hope for a better future. It is a gift with a face on it. I believe that community colleges are America’s greatest higher education innovation. Community colleges like Golden West College open the door for millions of students who would have been denied an opportunity of pursuing higher education. An AA degree may be the fastest way to successfully graduate from a university with less student debt. So whomever you are trying to help educationally, this is your best investment, and we will treat your gift as special because it is to the students we serve. On behalf of the students you will help, the programs you support and the staff you help us provide, thanks for all you have done to help us serve students well. And, If you want a quick look at what’s happening – check us out at goldenwestcollege.edu/50th

6 2014 - 2015 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Golden West College: The Perfect Choice for our Family

By Ellery Deaton Councilwoman, Seal Beach - Mayor 2014 and 2015

One of the great things about America is there are no dead ends in our education system. While some countries decide what schools and professions children will be eligible for by the time they enter their teens, we in America have open doors for the young, the middle aged, and even our seniors. We are free to find our vocation or even find a new calling at any time during life’s adventures.

I know this from personal experience. Having married at 19, life was a whirlwind of work, travel and new experiences. Then came the children, two boys and two girls. Raising our children was fulfilling and challenging, but after the children were all in school, I wanted to go back to work, and needed to go to college before I was qualified to teach.

Golden West College was my first choice. At almost 40 years old, I wondered if I’d be able to be successful in college. Golden West proved students of all qualifications can be successful.

Golden West College had then, as today, a great reputation, and with four children, the cost of this quality education was affordable. The academic counselors at Golden West planned out exactly what I needed to transfer to the University of California, Irvine. The educators at Golden West made every subject come alive—from Ecology to Philosophy to what was to become my major, Spanish. I did transfer to UCI, graduated Cum Laude in Spanish, received a bi-lingual teaching degree, and enjoyed a very rewarding teaching career at Santa Ana Unified for many years.

My two sons also attended Golden West. They were perfectly prepared for a four year college, but finances and the proximity of Golden West to our home and their jobs made it the perfect choice. And they excelled, transferring to UCI, and shortly thereafter SMU Law School. Today, they are both partners at their respective law firms.

Our fourth child followed our lead, attended Golden West, and transferred to UCI where she earned her teaching credential. Today, she is teaching high school in San Diego County.

And now our grandchildren are becoming college age and I plan to recommend Golden West. Golden West has been there for our family and for families like ours. The guidance and education each of us received prepared each person for our life’s callings. Thank you, Golden West, for meeting each of us where we were and moving us along to where we were going.

GWC Foundation in the Community The Golden West College Foundation proudly gives back to the community by supporting the El Viento Foundation, The Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation, the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, and AltaMed’s Huntington Beach Clinic.

Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization that supports low income, single parents working toward an educational goal to become economically independent. Our foundation’s goal is to raise the funds needed to provide the tools and support that will help parents achieve their independence. This is a powerful initiative for these parents, as it will change the pathway for their family, many times, breaking the cycle of abuse and building their self-esteem, which ultimately leads to a better future for generations.

16 2014 - 2015 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT El Viento Foundation How does the El Viento Foundation take students from the poorest neighborhood in Huntington Beach, with every disadvantage, and have all 450 students go to college? If the Oak View neighborhood were a city, it would be the eleventh poorest in the nation. El Viento makes a 10 year commitment - taking students from 4th grade through their second year of college. The first in their families to graduate high school and attend college, their $4,000 scholarship gives them a head start as they are taught, encouraged, tutored, modeled, and enriched. The students overcome the cycle of poverty and neighborhood challenges like academic failure, gang involvement, drug use, teen pregnancy, illiteracy, and a sense of hopelessness. They achieve academic and social skills, confidence, success, and become role models. College bound behavior is encouraged through science projects, workshops, museum trips, and sailing classes. Student and family expectations are changed as they learn that hard work and education create future options and success. El Viento seeks to make a difference – to leave a legacy for the children, the families, and the community of Oak View and Huntington Beach. We are grateful to have partners like the Coast Community College District and Golden West College. Oak View Renewal Oak View Renewal Partnership’s (OVRP) mission is to narrow the cultural, social, educational, health, and economic gaps between the Oak View community and the surrounding City of Huntington Beach. Serving as a model for community development, OVRP facilitates multiple projects that revolve around three overlapping strategic initiatives: Healthy Community, Resident Leadership, and Workforce Development also known as CIELO (Community for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Opportunities). OVRP encourages and develops resident leadership by cultivating expertise and resiliency within the community. By enabling and empowering Oak View’s residents, our programs are more sustainable, impactful, and hold the greatest promise for transformative change. Positioned as a catalyst for change, OVRP’s efforts reflect best practices that foster a level of resident engagement that can be adapted by others working to alleviate poverty and isolation. By addressing the disparity in jobs, education, and health, OVRP is a leading example in scalable and sustainable community renewal. Huntington Beach Youth Shelter The Light of Love snowflakes support the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. The Youth Shelter is an emergency crisis and intervention program providing a safe environment for approximately 120 Orange County 11-17 year old children each year. The home provides a clean bed, meals, counseling and tutoring for runaways at risk, and homeless youth in crisis.

Carol and Ray are both members of the first generation of their families to have the opportunity to complete a college education and want others to have the same chance.

The Garden Grove Hospital Volunteer Guild Pillar The purpose of the Garden Grove Hospital Volunteer Guild is to support students in the medical field. 2014 - 2015 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 33 Ways to Support Golden West College Whether you are looking to make a gift now or planning for future giving through bequests in your will, IRA or retirement accounts, charitable annuities or trusts, the Foundation Office at Golden West College can help. Please contact us at (714) 895-8316 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

Gifts of Cash Gifts of Cash (cash, checks or credit card) are always welcome and can be designated by the Donor as to their use or can be left up to the College to use them where most needed. These gifts can be of an endowed, temporarily restricted or unrestricted nature.

Gifts of Real Estate Gifts of appreciated real estate provide you with an immediate tax deduction and capital gains tax savings. Real estate donations can be made immediately or through your will or living trust. Donors can also make a tax-deductible current gift of their home while continuing to live in and enjoy it for their lifetimes with a gift of retained life interest.

Gifts of Personal Property Almost any form of property, such as works of art, antiques and other personal items can be a suitable charitable gift.

Gifts of Intellectual Property Gifts of intellectual property such as copyrights, patents, royalties, licenses, and technical data are welcome. The tax and legal provisions that govern these gifts vary according to the type of property.

Gifts of Stocks or Bonds For information on how to make a gift to the Golden West College Foundation through transfer of stocks or bonds, please call the GWC Foundation Office at 714-895-8315. The taxable benefits of gifting appreciated securities may be substantial.

Gifts by Wills or Living Trusts Gifts made by will or through a revocable living trust may result in estate tax savings and can be established to enhance an endowed fund that will honor the donor or loved one in perpetuity, establish a named or memorial fund, designate an area of the College you wish to support, or leave it up to the College to use the gift where it is most needed.

Gifts of Life Income There are many types of planned gifts for those interested in making significant gifts while enjoying increased income and an immediate charitable deduction. This type of gift includes Charitable Remainder Trusts, Pooled Income Funds, and Charitable Gift Annuities. Other deferred gifts include Life Insurance and Retirement Plans.

Charitable Lead Trusts A Charitable Lead Trust can provide immediate cash gifts from the trust income to the college for a stated period of years. After that time, the appreciated assets return to you, or transfer tax-free to your heirs.

Matching Gifts Many employers participate in a matching gifts program that can double, or quadruple your gift to GWC. Donors receive full credit for their matching gifts for the purposes of recognition and benefits. Just ask your company’s personnel office for a matching gifts form, fill it out and send it in with your contribution. We’ll take it from there.

Other types of gifts not listed There are many additional ways to support GWC. If you have questions about giving personal property, appreciated securities, gifts in kind, or by any other means, please contact the GWC Foundation.

For more information about any of the “Ways to Support GWC” please contact the Golden West College Foundation at (714) 895-8316.
