GENERAL ELECTION UNION VOTER GUIDE

Enclosed in this newsletter is a list of the Union endorsed candidates that the Union is recommending as the preferred candidate. The Union’s recommendation is based on each candidates position and record on issues important to Union members and working people. We strongly recommend that you vote for the Union endorsed candidates, but as always, how you vote remains a personal choice.

Early voting begins Saturday October 20, 2012 and runs through Friday November 2, 2012 The Union is also recommending that you take advantage of early voting. Check the voting times at the listed early voting locations carefully, many are open on Saturdays and Sundays. For people outside Washoe County check with your County Clerk for early voting information (see phone numbers on next page).

Voting early is a good way to make sure that you get to vote and don’t have to worry about lines or other problems that may come up on election day (Tuesday November 6,2012). Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) October 2012 www.local169.com Page 2

Why the Union Supports Barack Obama

The first President of the American Federations of Labor (AFL) Samuel Gompers famously said “Support Your Friends and Defeat Your Enemies”.

The Laborers’ Union is a Non-Partisan Organization, but we do subscribe to the idea of supporting our friends and defeating our enemies.

I do not care what party you are, the races for President, U.S. Senate, and the State Legislature are not about party, it is about ENEMY IDENTIFICATION. It is about your pay check, your health insurance, and your pension. Everything we have ever gotten from a Union contract is under attack by politicians like Mitt Romney.

Barack Obama is our friend.  Obama supports our right to form and join a Union, and to bargain collectively.  Obama supports Prevailing Wage Laws.  Obama supports Project Labor Agreements.  Obama supports stronger (not weaker) work place safety, just to name a few.

Our enemies, people like Mitt Romney, support a National Right to Work for Less Law aimed to financially cripple Unions, and their ability to fight for higher pay, and better conditions for our members.

Romney wants to repeal Prevailing Wage Laws which will result in a substantial cut in pay for all Construction Workers in this country (including Local 169 members). Romney opposes Project Labor Agreements. Romney views work place safety rules not as life saving measures to protect workers but as obstacles to profit.

The Union is following a century old idea and is supporting our friend Barack Obama and defeating our enemy Mitt Romney.
