This is the third in the Symposium Series that began in 2003, following informal meetings of the UQ Business School “Emotions reading group”, established in 2002 by PhD students Marie Dasborough and Michael O’Shea. It is the first time the symposium has been held away from the University of Queensland and I would like to thank Professor Neal Ashkanasy for his support in achieving this. The aim of the symposium is to provide an opportunity for interested academics and students to come together to present and to discuss topics in this exciting and developing field. Over the years this has expanded to include the participation of practitioners in the symposium. -

Here are some questions we have taken on notice and additional information that we have included in this additional submission. 1. What sort of threshold do you think would constitute human rights abuses? There has been a fair bit of outrage about the recent arrest of Martin Lee, Jimmy Lai and others in Hong Kong. Where would you suggest the line be drawn in terms of human rights abuses there that would trigger action under something like a global Magnitsky act? 2. Are there any Hong Kong Australian business people who receive benefit or who are benefited by their links to the Chinese Communist Party and mainland officials? And is there an understanding that, for their business interests to continue to be supported, they must remain silent about the erosion of democracy in Hong Kong? Further to that, does it go further, whereby these individuals actually contribute to the suppression of activists and/or the democracy movement in Hong Kong? If so, could those individuals be captured by potential Magnitsky style laws in Australia? 3. -

This online symposium’s objective is to encourage multidiscipline debate, research and theory development on the strategy and change interface, specifically, gain an understanding of the micro and macro processes and cognitions employed by strategy specialists and change agents to implement strategies and make change happen. This is within the context that strategy implementation is normally associated with the application of rational decision-making processes and strategies “put into action through the development of programs, budgets and procedures” (Wheelen & Hunger, 2008: 16) while organizational change with the application of behavioral science and “planned development and reinforcement of organisational strategies, structures and processes for improving an organisation’s effectiveness” (Waddell, Cummings & Worley, 2011: 4). By expanding or even ‘exploding’ the traditional boundaries between the strategy and organisational disciplines, new truths for successfully executing a strategy could be revealed. Each of the ten speakers will explain how their research uniquely advances what we know already about the ways in which people are enabled to bring about lasting organisational change and, as a result, create new organisational realities. -

Drew Pavlou - Submission to The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security into National Security Threats on Campus 1. I write to the Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security regarding Chinese state interference at The University of Queensland which is pervasive and ongoing. In my experience as a campus human rights activist opposed to Chinese government atrocities, I believe universities like UQ are now so economically dependent on China that they are willing to censor Chinese government critics to safeguard positive ties. This authoritarian creep illustrates the insidious danger Chinese state interference poses to our national security and democratic way of life. 2. My story began last year when I held a peaceful campus sit-in at UQ on July 24th, 2019 calling for the university to divest from its close economic ties with China in response to the Chinese government’s crackdown on democratic protestors in Hong Kong and its genocidal campaign against the Uyghur ethnic minority. I had no experience as an activist – this was the first protest I had ever organized in my life. I was driven by a pressing sense of outrage at the images of police brutality being relayed from Hong Kong and the increasingly dire reports coming out of Xinjiang, and I was furious that many in public life chose to look the other way due to China’s economic importance while Uyghurs faced genocide. I had studied the history of the international community’s failure to prevent the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide, and I was tormented by the fear that we would again break the solemn vow we made in the aftermath of World War II: ‘’Never Again.’’ This was what drove me to organize a protest on July 24th, the university’s Market Day. -
