24 DESTINATIONS | March 2008 STEVE WANKE get out of the iron pool’s warm waters to check out the soda pool, just feet away in an enclosed hut. When I enter the hut, I’m immediately struck by how dim the light is and how thick the steam is in this pool. Glancing up at the ceiling, I real- ize that I can just barely see through what looks to be a heavily screened roof. Th e only source of light in the hut is what looks to be a single bulb shining through primary-colored clear tiles. Th e thick fog picks up tones of yellow, red and blue and is so heavy, it completely obscures my hands when I hold them out in front of me. Th is pool is slightly less warm than the iron pool, but the visu- als create a surreal environment that makes me feel like I’m moving through a dream. I feel along the perimeter of the hut, in a truly tactile experience, feeling the same rock walls as the iron pool. Idly, I swirl the black water through my hands. In the dim light, it looks like liquid night. Next is the arsenic pool, located across the court- yard from the other two pools. It’s a long, cold sprint but I make it and give it a perfunctory dip of my toe. It takes a second for me to realize it’s far colder than the others. Th e arsenic pool will have to remain a mystery. Making the cold sprint across the courtyard once more, I plunge into the seduc- tive warmth of the iron pool. As I mold my back against the sandstone wall I close my eyes, inhale deeply then exhale into the frigid night air. Cool droplets of moisture tickle my face and I open my eyes.
