Volume 19 Issue 6 June 1, 2019 The 1958 - 1960 Lincolns, Interesting Automobiles A totally different Lincoln from the ones who came before it. Experiencing a shortage of articles from our members, we went back into the archives of Continental Comments for an interesting article; which you might enjoy. Lincoln models 1958 through 1960 were both interesting from a mechanical and stylistic standpoint. A lot of folks were not quite sure if the new look of these models was something that they would really like over a period of time. Compared to the 1956 and 1957 models, they really were quite different. Boxier and somewhat larger by most measurements. Now some 60 years later, they are sort of coming into their own. Nice examples will bring a lot of money today, especially if they are convertibles. We have several of these models owned by North Star club members, and they do speak quite highly of them. This article was written by Tim Howley and appeared in the July August 2002 issue of Conti- nental Comments. It is an interesting story, and it looks at these models in a fairly object fashion. We think of the 1959 monthly publication of Cadillac and 1957-59 Imperial as being the most interesting examples. But when you set the Northstar Region them alongside the 1958 Lincoln, and to a degree the 1959 and 1960 versions, they don't even of the Lincoln and begin to compare in terms of uniqueness of design. -

Corporate Homicide: The Stark Realities of Artificial Beings and Legal Fictions In the aftermath of one of the most highly publicized trialsin product lia- bility annals-the celebrated Pinto case-the legal question raised by that litigation remains unresolved. Controversy continues as to whether a cor- poration should be convicted of homicide when it knowingly markets an unsafe product that results in death. Today the answer is a resounding "no", in light of state statutes defining homicide as the killing of one human being by another, difficulties in finding the requisite criminal in- tent; and the practical problems of placing a legal fiction behind bars. However, there are recent indications that these present obstacles to a cor- porate homicide conviction appearto be dissolving. -

The show, held Feb. 25 – March 6, displayed more than 800 vehicles in 900,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio. More than 646,000 visitors attended the show over a 10-day period. Introduction 1.1 Conventional account The Ford Pinto case is today considered a classic example of corporate wrong-doing and is a mainstay of courses in engineering ethics, business ethics, philosophy, and the sociology of white- collar crime. The conventional account of the case goes something like this: In the mid-1960’s, Ford decided to rush a new subcompact car, the Pinto, into production to meet the growing competition from foreign imports. Because development was hurried, little time was available to modify the design when crash tests revealed a serious design defect: to provide adequate trunk space, the gas tank had been located behind rather than on top or in front of the rear axle. As a result, the Pinto was highly vulnerable to lethal fires in rear-end collisions and was in fact a “fire trap” and a “death trap.” Ford decided to ignore the defect anyway, because re-design would have delayed the entry of the car into the market and caused a potential loss of market share to competitors. As reports of fire- related deaths in Pintos began to come in from the field and as further crash tests re- affirmed the danger of the fuel-tank design, Ford decision-makers made an informed and deliberate decision not to modify the design, because doing so would harm corporate profits. -

David Ash, long-time Ford designer. *(see footnote) A: Last time we met, we were talking about the '57 Ford, which, chronologically, would have been calendar year about 1955. Shortly after that, I was transferred again, and this time to the Lincoln studio, which was a place I hadn't previously been. It had a new chief stylist named John Najjar. The major project at hand was the all-new Lincoln and Continental and also finishing up the facelift of the '57 Lincoln, which Bill Schmidt hadn't quite completed before he left for Packard. -
