How to Apply The Dyson Foundation has worked to make our grant application process as streamlined and informative as possible to assist you in your search for funding . We recommend you follow these steps:

1. Learn about our funding: By reviewing our various program areas. 2. Determine if you meet our eligibility criteria: By using our online eligibility questionnaire. 3. Submit a letter of inquiry: If you are applying for new or renewal project support grant, general operating support grant, mini-grant, or Strategic Restructuring Initiative grant, you should first submit a letter of inquiry. This is a concise way to tell us about your project so that we can determine whether to invite you to send us a full proposal. To submit a letter of inquiry, log in to our Grants Portal.

You will receive an acknowledgement of the receipt of your letter of inquiry

Ijyou would like to talk with a Foundation program of

If, on the basis of a letter of inquiry or Management Assistance Program application a proposed project or request appears to address key Dyson Foundation interests, you will be invited to submit additional information or a fully developed proposal. (Note that we do also accept the Dutchess County Common Grant Application.) Foundation staff will generally work closely with applicants on developing an acceptable proposal and related materials.

Each proposal will be evaluated on its own merits according to the following criteria:

• Closeness of fit with the Foundation's program priorities and values; • Significance of the need to be addressed; • Potential to achieve significant and enduring results; • Capacity of the applicant to accomplish its goals and objectives; and • Appropriateness of the budget.

During the review, representatives of the Foundation will research the proposal through telephone inquiries, site visits, and meetings with agency staff, board, volunteers, and clients as necessary. On occasion, outside experts maybe asked to help review a particular proposal. Foundation staff prepare written proposal summaries and recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Attachment Part XV - Question 2b, 2c, 2d (continued)

The time required to review a proposal varies according to the complexity of the proposal itself, the problem being addressed, and the number of proposals being reviewed. Generally, it can take at least six months from the time a letter of inquiry is received to the actual award of a grant, although the Foundation strives to be as expeditious as possible in its review of inquires and proposals. The directors of the Dyson Foundation meet quarterly, at which time they consider the funding recommendations of the staff. There are no pre-set deadlines for submission of materials.

General Funding Guidelines The Dyson Foundation awards grants in several different program areas that each have specific guidelines. Visit the Grantmalung page to learn more about each of them. Unsolicited proposals or inquiries are not considered in certain program areas so potential applicants should review the program descriptions carefully.

All applicants should be aware of the followingeneralZ) guidelines that apply to all program areas- As a private foundation, we can only fund organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code - as long as those organizations are not classified as private foundations under Section 509 (a) of the code. In addition, we cannot direct payments through a fiscal agent in lieu of an organization having 501 (c) 3 designation. If you have questions about these policies, please contact us • We do not make grants to governmental units (such as fire districts or municipalities). • We are sorry but we cannot make grants directly to individuals for any purpose. You may wish to call 2-1-1 if you Eve in the Hudson Valley and need information about available basic needs services and programs • There are certain types of grants that we will not consider: o For dinners, fundraising events, tickets, or benefit o advertising (read our Statement about Special Events Funding); o In response to direct mail campaigns; o For international projects; o To service clubs and similar organizations, o For debt or deficit reduction.

Applicants should apply to the Dyson Foundation on the basis of these guidelines, not on the basis of what or whom the Foundation may have funded in the past. The Foundation's interests are ever-changing, becoming more focused, or even shifting entirely to a new area in response to an emerging need.

Policy on nondiscrimination The Dyson Foundation will not award grant support to organizations that, in their constitution, bylaws, or practices, discriminate against a person or group on the basis of age, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or religious belief. Grantees may target services to a particular population when the targeted groups require specialized programs to meet specific needs not shared by the general population.

Directors ' Discretionary Program This program area allows Foundation directors and officers to recommend a certain amount of grant funding to eligible nonprofit organizations that they select.
