The Recorded Legacy of Enrico Caruso and Its Influence on the Italian Vocal Tradition. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance). May 2016, 68 pp., 1 table, references, 145 titles. This dissertation presents evidence for the influence which tenor Enrico Caruso had on the Italian Vocal Tradition. This impact was clearly boosted by the revolution realized in the fledgling recording industry, and the recordable disc. In the years of 1902-1920, gramophones became commonplace, and collecting recordings became a growing interest for many. This new technology required specialized skills, and was especially suited to certain qualities of voice. Caruso enjoyed immense success in this medium, in recording over 250 records. Italian vocal style at the turn of the century was changing, and Caruso employed a new “modern” style in his singing. His interpretive decisions, vocal method, and repertoire which he championed had an impact on the vocal tradition of future generations. Comparison of his recordings with tenors Fernando De Lucia, Giuseppe Anselmi, and Alessandro Bonci shows a marked contrast in styles of “the old school” and Caruso’s “more straightforward” approach. -

LINEAGES OF VOCAL PEDAGOGY IN AUSTRALIA, 1850-1950 Volume 2 by Beth Mary Williams A dissertation submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The University of Melbourne September 2002 11 Lineages of Vocal Pedagogy in Australia The following is an introductory lineage study of major lineages of vocal pedagogy in Australia. Many lineages not contained in the body of the thesis are outlined in this document. The lineage also provides a cursory glance at the major lineages of traditional Italian pedagogy which have relevance for an Australian vocal pedagogical context, and it was hoped that this might assist readers in ascertaining the long term lineage links without excessive complication. The symbol'-' indicates that the following is separated from what is immediately above, and that a new lineage has begun. Lineages are indicated as subsequent generations by the use of one tab space, to show that the following names are pupils of the aforementioned. Naturally, lists of students of particular teachers are far from complete, and some only represent one particularly successful pupil of a given teacher. Where possible dates and biographical information are given, in order to contextualise the work of a singer or teacher. The documentation of lineages is not exhaustive. Many teachers who were active between 1850 and 2000 are omitted owing to the difficulties in finding information on private studios through archival resources and the reluctance of many present teachers to participate in surveys. The following is a sample three-generation entry, with an explanation of how the lineage may be understood: ~ (Separates different schools of singers.) Francesco Paolo Tosti, a lyric tenor and composer, wrote songs that exemplify technical concepts that should be cultivated in the undergraduate lyric tenor voice. This guide will present five Tosti songs that address technical issues, which the lyric tenor must overcome to progress into more advanced repertoire. Introduction The tenor voice is arguably the most unique, and challenging fach to teach. Richard Miller, one our countries most highly regarded pedagogues, states in his book Training Tenor Voices, “Singing tenor is a challenge. It requires guts and intelligence. It also demands the best technical foundation a singer can get.”2 In lessons, teachers’ address proper posture, breath mechanics, optimal resonance, clarity of vowels, vowel modification, and overall expression. However, it is through the repertoire assigned to the singer that the instructor can best guide the application of these technical principals. The inherent legato and frontal qualities of the Italian language are prominent reasons that voice teachers assign Italian repertoire to their students early in vocal development. -

Benjamin Liupaogo • April 8, 2017 PROGRAM NOTES Joseph Marx (1882-1964) Duration: 10 minutes Austrian composer Joseph Marx is known primarily for his songs; he composed around 120 between 1908 and 1912, with more to follow in later years. His style is a mixture of late Romanticism and Impressionism, with debts to Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Max Reger, among others. If his songs seem eclectic, it is because he adapted his musical language to each poem he set to music. In addition to composing, Marx worked as a music theory teacher, director of Vienna's music academy (the Hochschule für Musik) in the 1920s, a music critic for two Viennese periodicals, and a writer. -
