FOGHORVolume 90, Issue 20 University of San Francisco AprilN 20, 1994 ASUSF budget up for approval

Kelly Sullivan Editor-in-Chief

The 1994-95 ASUSF Budget could turn from a recommended budget to an approved one at tonight's ASUSF Senate meeting. The Finance Committee completed the budget on April 13 after reviewing proposed budgets from 20 AS funded organizations and clubs on March 19. The Finance Committee allocated $300,000 to AS clubs and organizations; this is the difference between the $1.1 million requested and the $800,000 in AS generated revenue. The AS subsidy was taken from the student activity fee of $ 100 which every USF student pays per year. The Nursing Student Association was added to thisyear's list of AS subsidized clubs. Budget appeals were filed by the Freedom Alliance Culturally Empowered Students (FACES), the Undergraduate Business Association and the Nursing Student Association. ASUSF Treasurer Kevin Tun said that the budget was tabled at last week's meeting and anticipates that it will be voted on tonight Warm weather, good food, ,and an opportunity to get involved filled Harney Plaza with students last Tun said that he is satisfied with the budgeting process from Thursday. The events of last Sunday are now permanently ingrained in my memory, torturing me like a Christmas song that you can't get out of your head in the middle of June. How could one ofmy favorite activities slowly degenerate into my own private hell? Thcsordid affair actually began late Saturday night while I was trying to unwind from a typical evening of alcohol consumption and mayhem. As I lay woozy in my bed, I Twister in Harney dreaded the twelve-page paper that was due first thing Monday morning that I had not yet started. Just as I felt my body slide into that restful period that usually proceeds a period of deep sleep, I felt a cold hand lighdy tough my cheek. I opened my eyes and my senses were shocked to see the face of long-dead Red Sox play-by-play announcer Red Barber hovering above my bed. "Oh doctor!" Red said with asmile. "Fear not, but I am the bearer of great news. You have been chosen by the sports-gods as the best sports viewer in all the land. How about that!" Before I could reply, Red's face vanished Just as quickly as it had appeared, leaving only a faint smell of Cuban cigars. I blinked in disbelief and promptly got up and checked my closets for Rod Serling lurking among my dirty laundry. I love the scene in "Dumbo" where the little elephant drinks too much champagne and hallucinates that giant Pink Elephants come to visit him. So I had no problem Tuesday, April 26 • 12:30 In Harney Plaza 4 members per team Anyone can play! believing the fact that a Hall of Fame base ball analyst, who has been dead for five years, 9 had just visited my dorm room. My only question was why the sports-gods had picked me. In all modesty, I'll admit that I've taken the art of watching sports to a new level, 7 PM GILL THEATRE but I had no idea that I was among the best in the world. Little did I know that this so- called honor would become a curse. I awoke bright-eyed and bushy tailed Sunday morning, ready to wage war on my computer screen and churn out that big paper. Just as I sat at my desk and began to type, my television set, sitting on the chest of drawers, suddenly flippedon . I lost the remote TUESDAY control the day I bought the set (yes, it is possible to lose something in the janitor closets §w they call dorm rooms at USF) and there was no one else in the room, so I attributed the mysterious occurrence to some sort of electrical problem. The New York-Charlotte hoops game was on; another lame match up that in no way affected the NBA playofFpicture. Seeing that the Hornets were ahead by 22 in the fourth quarter, I walked over to turn the game off. ne of the best things I pushed the power button, but nothing happened. The switch must be broken, I b<-»ut the BSU darkens thought. Since I couldn't turn the thing off, and I love meaningless, boring NBA games just as much as the next guy, I watched the final ten minutes, which in reality, lasted about three hours. The game (and 45 minutes of moronic post game analysis by Bill hat it I entertain yot Walton) finallyended , and I sat back down to start my paper. Just then, there was a knock at my door. I sprang up to see who it was, and almost more than this ad does doubled over to find the entire USF baseball team, dressed in their home white uniforms, in the hallway outside my dorm room. Come to the BSU Dance "We've been waiting for you," all twenty-five players said in unison. "We can't start in the Crossroads. the game without you." Dumbfounded, I followed the team down to Benedetti Diamond. I sat up in the K^;4afo*. bleachers and the team took the field for their game against Saint Mary's as if nothing had happened. The game ended at 4:00, and I scampered back to my room, for I was running out of time to finishth e paper. The voice, of course, was that of Barry Bonds. The Giants' slugger was literally talking WELCOME WEEK to me from the batter's box in Joe Robbie stadium. When the three-time MVP addresses you directly, through the television set, no less, you listen. So, I was forced to watch the entire Giants game, the hour long edition of The SportsCenter on ESPN, and then Baseball Tonight. Keeping mind that I had less than seven hours at this point to finishm y paper, I tried to escape the cozy confines ofmy room to the computer room in the basement of the dormitory. I was intercepted, however, halfway to the elevator by Dan Patrick, Keith Oberman, Chris Berman, and Peter Gammons.
