Racial Choice at Century's End In ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: RACIAL CHOICE AT CENTURY’S END IN CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE Kaylen Danielle Tucker, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor Mary Helen Washington Department of English This dissertation introduces the term “racial choice” to describe a contemporary idea that racial identity can be chosen or elected, as can the significance and the influence of race on an individual’s identity. Racial choice emerges out of the shifting historical, cultural, and social discussions of race and identity we have witnessed after integration. This dissertation examines the resulting representations of contemporary black identity in African American literature by analyzing texts that were published in the last quarter of the twentieth century and that feature protagonists that come of age during or after integration. Andrea Lee’s Sarah Phillips (1984), Danzy Senna’s Caucasia (1998), and Paul Beatty’s The White Boy Shuffle (1996) are representative texts that engage racial choice to register how the racial hierarchy has changed in the late twentieth century and how that change affects the African American literary tradition of race writing. In their attempts to write outside of the existing racial paradigm—using white flight, passing, and satire as narrative strategies—the authors test the racial boundaries of African American literature, finding that writing outside of race is ultimately unachievable. The introductory chapter explains the cultural, literary, and scholarly context of my study, arguing that because race matters differently in the late twentieth century contemporary African American literature handles race uniquely. I argue in my first chapter that Lee uses white flight as a narrative form to move Sarah Phillips beyond the influence of racialization and to suggest class as an alibi for racial difference. Continuing this theme amidst the Black Power Movement of the 1970s and the multiracial project of the 1990s, my second chapter analyzes Senna’s Caucasia, which revises the passing narrative form and explores the viability of choosing a biracial identity. In my third chapter, I show how Beatty’s The White Boy Shuffle satirizes the African American protest tradition to point up the performativity necessary in maintaining racial binaries and suggests that culture is a more accurate identifier than race. My concluding chapter argues that though the three novels under study challenge racial categories—and by extension race writing—to different degrees, they all use similar methods to point up the shifting significance of race, racial categories, and racial identity. By historicizing attitudes about racial categories, challenging the dichotomous understanding of race, representing the tensions of racial authenticity, and showing the performativity necessary to maintain racial categories, the novels illustrate the traditional boundaries of racial choice and attempt to stretch the limits of the African American literary tradition. I contend that the idea of racial choice emerges out of the shifting historical, cultural, and social discussions of race we have witnessed in the late twentieth century. These shifts have called into question the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court codification of the one-drop rule, which established that individuals with any amount of “black blood” in their heritage could not claim whiteness. The Ferguson ruling set an enduring precedent of legislating race and privileging whiteness. The idea of racial choice challenges the one-drop rule by allowing such factors as white skin privilege, class allegiance, or a cultural identity to dominate over historical racial hierarchies in the determination of an individual’s identity. This dissertation examines representations of contemporary black identity in African American literature by analyzing texts that were published in the last quarter of the twentieth century and that feature protagonists that come of age during or after integration. Andrea Lee’s Sarah Phillips (1984), Danzy Senna’s Caucasia (1998), and Paul Beatty’s The White Boy Shuffle (1996) are representative texts that investigate the concept of racial choice. I begin with these literary examples because they 1 incorporate the themes of contemporary race identity—the representation of class, color, and culture as stand-ins for race, the performance of race, and the meta- narrative of the literary representation of race in the late twentieth century—that are the subjects of this dissertation. These texts are indicative of a particular cultural climate present at the close of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty- first, and the chapters of this dissertation are organized around key historical and cultural moments that highlight the current dilemma of racial identity for the post- integration generation. This dissertation analyzes the anxieties surrounding racial identity for people of color and also clarifies the idea of racial choice—that one can choose his or her own racial identity—that accompanies it in order to identify the contemporary nuances of racialization and to determine those influences on African American literature. Cultural Contexts The idea of racial choice that I am interrogating in this dissertation is a contemporary phenomenon produced by the current political and cultural climate in which “choice” over the impact of race is affirmed for some but not for others. The concept of racial choice also reflects national enterprises to assure racial equality through efforts like integration, multiculturalism, and changing the Census racial categories. These political movements advance the concept of racial choice in that 2 they rely on individuals opting to participate in postmodern systems of racialization. These movements operate on the assumption that individuals can choose to participate in these systems, and as a result, the concept of race will have different consequences. Though this dissertation focuses on a contemporary version of racial choice, the idea of choosing race did not originate in the last quarter of the twentieth century. In the past, racial choice operated primarily through the option of passing for another race, generally blacks or other minorities passing for white. The contemporary version of racial choice is different from passing in that it does not rely on a person hiding his or her race, or pretending to be another race. This difference between past and present practices of racial choice reflects the shifting significance of racial categories present in the last quarter of the twentieth century, as well as the perception that one can highlight characteristics like color,

  • Towards a Dialogic Understanding of Print Media Stories About
    TOWARDS A DIALOGIC UNDERSTANDING OF PRINT MEDIA STORIES ABOUT BLACK/WHITE INTERRACIAL FAMILIES by VICTOR KULKOSKY (Under the Direction of Dwight E. Brooks) ABSTRACT This thesis examines print media news stories about Black/White interracial families from 1990-2003. Using the concept of dialogism, I conduct a textual analysis of selected newspaper and news magazine stories to examine the dialogic interaction between dominant and resistant discourses of racial identity. My findings suggest that a multiracial identity project can be seen emerging in print media stories about interracial families, but the degree to which this project is visible depends on each journalist’s placement of individual voices and discourses within the narrative of each story. I find some evidence of a move from placing interracial families within narratives of conflict toward a more optimistic view of such families’ position in society.     Arnett 1 Alyx Arnett Dr. Eva White E304 16 December 2009 Racial Attitudes in the United States: Racial Hybridity in Danzy Senna’s Caucasia The United States, once a slave-owning society, has made substantial progress in decreasing the injustices and mistreatment toward black racial minorities and hybrids since the early 1900s. In the 1880s, Jim Crow laws were passed, legalizing segregation between blacks and whites. Then, in 1896, the Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson ruled that “separate facilities for whites and blacks were constitutional” (“Jim Crow Laws”). Afterward, virtually every part of society was segregated, and new institutions such as schools and hospitals had to be created specifically for blacks. But in 1965, a turning point came in American society when another Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education, declared that facilities separated on the basis of race were unconstitutional. During that time, the Civil Rights Act was passed along with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to provide blacks with rights that they had previously been denied (“Jim Crow Laws”). It is during this shift in American society that Birdie Lee is born. Through the perspective of this biracial speaker growing up in the liminal space between racism and acceptance, Danzy Senna’s Caucasia provides readers with a view of the shifting attitudes and increased tolerance of racial hybridity in the United States. Ridley as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honors in English Thesis Director: Dr. Kimberly Mack Honors Dr. Melissa Valiska Gregory The University of Toledo DECEMBER 2015 Abstract Nelson George's notion of the post-soul aesthetic--defined as the artistic vision of black artists who come of age after the Civil Rights and Black Power/Arts Movements of the 1960s and 70s--provides many African American writers and scholm's with a vehicle for critically examining contemporary African American literature and culture. In his 1996 debut novel The Whtte Boy Shuffle, poet Paul Beatty parodies and examines many spheres of contemporary black culture, among them the fagade of"white" multiculturalism, the queerness of black masculinity, and the globalization of black popular culture. I argue that the formal structure of the novel replicates Beatty's exploration and subversion of post-soul discourses on blaclcness. By simultaneously rejecting yet worldng within the category of"post-soul," The White Boy Shuffle evinces a post-soul sensibility that maintains the fluidity and playfulness inherent to the post-soul generation, illustrating Greg Tate's definition of post-soul as the "African American equivalent to postmodernism." Through the protagonist Gunnar I(aufman, a young black poet, I believe that the novel's form prioritizes poetry, which disrupts the fictional gem-e. Also, by employing particular racial nomenclature and consistent querying from Gunnar which satirizes past racial discourses, the novel signifies on the timeline of "America's never-ending discussion of race" and brings them forward for the post-soul generation to examine.

The idea of passing relied on the notion that there was an authentic racial self that one was concealing. The mulatta represents assimilation, the end of blackness, and the end of the discussion on racism. Elia Kazan’s 1949 “problem film” Pinky, based on the novel Quality, in many ways embodies the traditional passing narrative. Danzy Senna’s 1998 novel Caucasia, on the other hand, acts as both a testimony of the lived experiences of being multiracial and critique of the rigidity of racial categories in the United States. Senna argues that race is more performative than biological. By centering on a racially mixed young woman and her family, Caucasia complicates and deconstructs the black/white binary and challenges multicultural theory.

Paul Beatty is an African American novelist and who is the first American to get the Man Booker prize 2016. His works are highly satirical. The White Boy Shuffle is his debut novel. As an African American, he portraits images of slavery, loss of identity, race and racial barriers in his novel. His protagonist Gunnar, who is a poet, is in a dilemma throughout the novel. There are many controversies in his life. He appears to be a man of mixed identity and he is often transforms between his identities. The objective of the paper is to project the exhaustion of a pure identity and the emergence of a new corrupted identity. The research tool employed is the concept of ‘hibridity’. Keywords: Culture, identity, hybridity, imitation, and race. INTRODUCTION The literature of every society is marked by its own problems which are unique and peculiar and so cannot be ignored. African American literature is dominated by African’s encounter with the west and its consequences. The African American social, political and economic history has contributed a lot to the making of African American literature. With its peculiar history of racial segregation and its impact on the culture, political and psychological situation, African American Literature mostly presents to the reader, the hostility that existed between the world of Whites and Blacks. In the post colonial context, the novel ceases to be the literary artifact. Post colonial literature addresses the problems and consequences of the decolonization of the country and of a nation, especially the political independence of formerly subjugated colonial people.

Centering “culture” as a terrain of contestation over common sense racial meaning, The Unquiet Dead focuses in particular on popular cultural repertoires of narrative, visual, and sonic enunciation to read how histories of racialized and gendered violence circulate, (dis)appear, and congeal in and as “common sense” in a period in which the uneven dispensation of value and violence afforded different bodies is purported to no longer break down along the same old racial lines. Much of the project is grounded in particular in the emergent cultural politics of race of the early to mid-1990s, a period I understand as the beginnings of the US “post-racial moment.” The ongoing, though deeply and contested and contradictory, “post-racial moment” is one in which the socio-cultural valorization of racial categories in their articulations to other modalities of difference and oppression is alleged to have undergone significant transformation such that, among other things, processes of racialization are understood as decisively delinked from racial violence.
