LE TEMPS DES COPAINS: YOUTH AND THE MAKING OF MODERN FRANCE IN THE ERA OF DECOLONIZATION, 1958-1968 by DREW M. Lyons © 2015 Drew M. Fedorka ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the popular yé-yé phenomenon and its role in articulating a vision of modern France in the aftermath of decolonization. Yé-yé, a teen-oriented and music-based popular culture that flourished from roughly 1962-1966, was in a unique position to define what it meant to be young in 1960s France. I argue that the yé-yé popular culture, through its definition of youth, provided an important cultural channel through which to articulate a modern French identity after the Algerian War (1954-1962). Using a combination of advertisements, articles, and sanitized depictions of teenage pop singers, the yé-yé popular culture constructed an idealized vision of adolescence that coupled a technologically-savvy and consumer-oriented outlook with a distinctly conservative, apolitical, and inclusive social stance. It reflected France’s reorientation toward a particular technological and consumer modernity while simultaneously serving to obscure France’s recent colonial past and the dubious legacy of imperialism. To contextualize yé-yé, this thesis begins by examining the blousons noirs (black jackets) and the societal anxieties that surrounded them in the early Fifth Republic (1958-1962). -

Comparing the French and American Ecosystems MAY 2019 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In France, representative democracy is experiencing a growing mistrust that also affects the media. The latter are facing major simultaneous challenges: • a disruption of their business model in the digital age; • a dependence on social networks and search engines to gain visibility; • increased competition due to the convergence of content on digital media (competition between text, video and audio on the Internet); • increased competition due to the emergence of actors exercising their influence independently from the media (politicians, bloggers, comedians, etc.). In the United States, these developments have contributed to the polarization of the public square, characterized by the radicalization of the conservative press, with significant impact on electoral processes. Institut Montaigne investigated whether a similar phenomenon was at work in France. To this end, it led an in-depth study in partnership with the Sciences Po Médialab, the Sciences Po School of Journalism as well as the MIT Center for Civic Media. It also benefited from data collected and analyzed by the Pew Research Center*, in their report “News Media Attitudes in France”. Going beyond “fake news” 1 The changes affecting the media space are often reduced to the study of their most visible symp- toms. For instance, the concept of “fake news”, which has been amply commented on, falls short of encompassing the complexity of the transformations at work. -

The series, in turn, is part of a larger, ongoing project investigatingthe role of race, lawyers, and ethics in the American criminal-justice system. The purpose of the project is to understand the race-based, identity-making norms and practices of prosecutors and defenders in order to craft alternative civil- rights and criminal-justicestrategies in cases of racially-motivatedviolence. To that end, this Article revisits the prosecution and defense of theJena Six in the hope of uncovering the professional norms of practice under de jure and defacto conditions of racialsegregation, a set of norms I callJim Crow legal ethics. -

Bertelsmann's strategic advances in 2017 included increasing its shareholding in the world's largest trade publishing group, Penguin Random House, to a three-quarters majority. As a result, the Group holds majorities of 75 percent or 100 percent in all of its divisions. Bertelsmann increased its revenues in the reporting period by 1.4 percent, to €17.2 billion (previous year: €17.0 billion). The key performance drivers were RTL Group; the music company BMG, which generated revenues of over €500 million for the first time; the services subsidiary Arvato; and the education activities pooled in the Bertelsmann Education Group. -

Romero* Recent legal scholarshipsuggests that the Supreme Court's decisions on immigrants' rightsfavor conceptions of membership over personhood. Federal courts are often re- luctant to recognize the personal rights claims of noncitizens because they are not members of the United States. ProfessorMichael Scaperlandaargues that because the courts have left the protection of noncitizens' rights in the hands of Congress and, therefore, its constituents, U.S. citizens must engage in a serious dialogue regarding membership in this polity while considering the importance of constitutionalprinci- ples of personhood. This Article takes up Scaperlanda'schallenge. Borrowing from recent research in social psychology, this Article contends that "We the People" can better inform our ideas of polity membership by resisting existing invidious stereo- types of the noncitizen as the "alien" and by embracing instead the notion of equal personhood. -

Review by Whitney Walton, Purdue University. In Enfants Terribles, Susan Weiner examines cultural constructions of youth in France from the end of World War II through the 1960s. This is a fascinating and indispensable work of gender and cultural analysis, based on textual, visual, and statistical representations of young women and men in popular magazines, literature, films, and opinion polls. Weiner argues that in the years following World War II, a new feminine figure emerged in French popular culture. This was the "bad girl" or the enfant terrible, a sexually adventurous, unmarried young woman who eluded traditional categories of femininity largely through her promiscuous, unemotional sexuality. The "bad girl" was a creation of the new mass media and reflected anxieties about the Cold War, the Algerian crisis, Americanization, and the loss of French cultural identity, as did similarly troublesome young men. "Youth," always figured as masculine, was disconcerting for its aimlessness, political apathy, and delinquency. But the problem of young men was more readily understood than that of young women, since public opinion viewed men as victimized by historical and political conditions. Weiner claims that the construction of these feminine and masculine identities of the young in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s brought public attention to youth long before the outbursts of May 1968.
