Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Identity Statement

Holy Innocents’ is Atlanta’s only pre-K through 12th-grade Episcopal School. We are committed to teach, learn, worship, and serve in community, for the greater good of our students, their families, and the world.

Our commitment is grounded in the belief – supported by scripture, reason, and Tradition – that God is present in every person and, therefore, we must “strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being” in everything we do.

In the national tradition of Episcopal schools, we welcome students of all faiths and backgrounds, knowing that our differences elevate and glorify one another.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s mission encourages spiritual growth and incorporates exceptional programs in academics, athletics and the arts as a pathway toward ethical lives.

PRELUDE Midtown Brass Quintet

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! LORD, GOD ALMIGHTY!”

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, who wert and art and evermore shalt be.

3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

BISHOP: Blessed be God, our beginning and our end. People: All praise, thanks, and glory be to God, forever and ever. Amen!

COLLECT FOR PURITY Bishop and the people say together

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name through Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECT FOR THE DAY

BISHOP: The Lord be with you! People And also with you!

BISHOP: Let us pray. Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen!

FIRST READING please be seated Sirach 42:17-24

LECTOR: A READING FROM THE BOOK OF SIRACH Even God’s holy ones must fail in recounting the wonders of the Lord, Though God has given his hosts the strength to stand firm before his glory. He searches out the abyss and penetrates the heart; their innermost being he understands. The Most High possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are to come: He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the deepest secrets. No understanding does he lack; no single thing escapes him. Perennial is his almighty wisdom; he is from all eternity one and the same, With nothing added, nothing taken away; no need of a counselor for him! How beautiful are all his works! even to the spark and fleeting vision! The universe lives and abides forever; to meet each need, each creature is preserved. All of them differ, one from another, yet none of them has he made in vain.

READER: THE WORD OF THE LORD! People Thanks be to God!

PSALM 121 said in unison

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills; * from where is my help to come?

2 My help comes from the LORD, * the maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot be moved * and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.

4 Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel * shall neither slumber nor sleep;

5 The LORD himself watches over you; * the LORD is your shade at your right hand,

6 So that the sun shall not strike you by day, * nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; * it is he who shall keep you safe.

8 The LORD shall watch over your going out and your coming in, * from this time forth for evermore.

HYMN BEFORE THE GOSPEL “Sanctuary” Please stand & sing twice

Lord prepare me to be a Sanctuary, pure & holy, tried & true. With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living, Sanctuary for you!

THE HOLY GOSPEL all remain standing LUKE 4:14-22a

GOSPELLER: THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE People: Glory to you, Lord Christ!

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.

At the conclusion of the Gospel the following is said:

GOSPELLER: THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD! People: Praise to you, Lord Christ!

Everyone may be seated

INSTALLATION & INVESTITURE

A Tippet is presented to Reverend McDaniel. The Tippet resembles a large black scarf that is worn by Clergy over the Surplice & Cassock at non-Eucharistic Services like Morning/Evening Prayer & Commencement Services for the School. It is similar to the stole worn by Priests & Bishops and it is usually ornamented with emblems such as the Episcopal Church seal or the seal of the local Diocese.

BISHOP: Becky, let this Tippet be a sign of your ministry in this place.

People: Amen!

The Reverend McDaniel stand before the congregation and offers this prayer.

O Lord, my God, you have called me to serve as a Chaplain at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. To you, and to your service, I devote my mind, body and spirit. Fill my mind with the record of your mighty works; enlighten my understanding with the light of your Holy Spirit; and may all the desires of my heart and will center on what you would have me do. Give me curiosity and discernment, the courage and strength to will and to persevere, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Be always with me in carrying out the Pastoral duties of my ministry at this school.

In prayer, quicken my devotion; in praises, heighten my love and gratitude; in teaching, give me readiness of thought and expression. All of this I ask for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

BISHOP: In the Name of God, and as a Bishop of the Diocese of Atlanta, I install you Becky, as The Lower School Chaplain.

Let us greet our newly-installed Lower-School Chaplain!

THE OFFERTORY SENTENCE

PREPARATION OF THE TABLE FOR THE HOLY EUCHARIST

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING / EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

BISHOP WRIGHT: The Lord be with you. PEOPLE: And also with you.

BISHOP WRIGHT: Lift up your hearts. PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord.

BISHOP WRIGHT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PEOPLE: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Then, facing the altar, Bishop Wright prays the Preface

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.

Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we say,

SANCTUS

The Bishop and People Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.

Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” 7

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,

“Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

Celebrant and People

We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God.

The Celebrant continues

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.

[Remember (NN. and) all who minister in your Church.] [Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth.] [Remember ______.] [Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.] And grant that we may find our inheritance with [the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, (with ______) and] all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past.

We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE DOXOLOGY

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People and Bishop Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

8

BISHOP: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: People Therefore let us keep the feast, Alleluia.

Everyone is invited to God’s table to receive the bread and wine. You may also choose to receive a blessing by approaching the priest with your arms crossed in front of your chest.

The people receive communion at stations to which the ushers will direct you

THE COMMUNION HYMN “Draw the Circle Wide”

Draw the circle wide Draw it wider still Let this be our song, No-one stands alone Standing side by side Draw the circle wide!

God the still-point of the circle Round whom all creation turns Nothing lost but held forever In God’s gracious arms.

Draw the circle wide Draw it wider still Let this be our song, No-one stands alone Standing side by side Draw the circle wide!

Let our hearts touch far horizons So encompass great and small Let our loving know no borders Faithful to God’s call.

Draw the circle wide Draw it wider still Let this be our song, No-one stands alone Standing side by side Draw the circle wide!

Let the dreams we dream be larger Than we’ve ever dreamed before Let the dream of Christ be in us Open every door!

Draw the circle wide Draw it wider still Let this be our song, No-one stands alone Standing side by side Draw the circle wide!

At the conclusion of communion everyone stands and the following prayer is said together.

9

BISHOP: Let us pray!

Bishop and People together

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
