Ana Moya Gutierrez Grau de: Estudis Anglesos IT IS TIME FOR VIRGINIA WOOLF Ane Iñigo Barricarte Universitat de Barcelona Curso 2018/2019, G2 Barclona, 11 June 2019 ABSTRACT This paper explores the issue of time in two of Virginia Woolf’s novels; Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse. The study will not only consider how the theme is presented in the novels but also in their filmic adaptations, including The Hours, a novel written by Michael Cunningham and film directed by Stephen Daldry. Time covers several different dimensions visible in both novels; physical, mental, historical, biological, etc., which will be more or less relevant in each of the novels and which, simultaneously, serve as a central point to many other themes such as gender, identity or death, among others. The aim of this paper, beyond the exploration of these dimensions and the connection with other themes, is to come to a general and comparative conclusion about time in Virginia Woolf. Key Words: Virginia Woolf, time, adaptations, subjective, objective. Este trabajo consiste en una exploración del tema del tiempo en dos de las novelas de Virginia Woolf; La Señora Dalloway y Al Faro. Dicho estudio, no solo tendrá en cuenta como se presenta el tema en las novelas, sino también en la adaptación cinematográfica de cada una de ellas, teniendo también en cuenta Las Horas, novela escrita por Michael Cunningham y película dirigida por Stephen Daldry. El tiempo posee diversas dimensiones visibles en ambos trabajos; física, mental, histórica, biológica, etc., que cobrarán mayor o menor importancia en cada una de las novelas y que, a su vez, sirven de puntos de unión para otros muchos temas como pueden ser el género, la identidad o la muerte entre otros. -

The Charleston Bulletin Supplements, by Virginia Woolf and Quentin Bell, The British Library, London (ISBN 978 0 7123 5891), 2013. In 2003 the British Library purchased the manuscripts of The Charleston Bulletin and, a decade later, it launched this attractive edition of a selection of special issues or supplements to the daily Bulletin. Ninety years ago Vanessa and Clive Bell’s sons, Julian, aged fifteen, and Quentin Bell, thirteen, began to create their family newspaper. Quentin took the lead in the enterprise as he explains in the Afterword to his aunt Virginia Woolf’s The Widow and the Parrot: ‘I made all the illustrations and most of the other matter. From time to time my brother got bored and stopped work. I carried on reporting and inventing the news as best I could until he, exasperated by my spelling, my handwriting, my grammar etc, would take over again. Thus it happened that I asked for a contribution from my aunt Virginia’ (1). The enthusiastic participation of his aunt, who was by now a celebrated writer, explains why this book is now being published. The book is over 130 pages long, clearly printed on good quality paper and it is reasonably priced at £12.99. It includes eight black and white photographs and forty illustrations that have been carefully reproduced in authentic colour. The original collection at the British Library comprises many variously-sized pages with lots of white space on each. Inevitably compromise had to be made to compress irregular manuscripts into a neat, conventional, uniform book. The manuscript of The Dunciad edition, for instance, is 415 x 263 mm but here the images of that edition are reproduced as 140 x 110 mm on pages that are 210 x 130 mm. -

London: Elek, 1980. Pp. 256. £9.95. FRANCES SPALDlNG'S Roger Fry is a critical biography for which everyone interested in Bloomsbury culture should be grateful. Based on extensive correspondences, it is the fullest account ofhis life we are likely to see. And yet Spalding's biography should be taken in conjunction with Virginia Woolf's remarkable Roger Fry: A Biography (1940) which dis closes the sympathy offriendship no subsequent biographer can hope to regain. Frances Spalding ventured where Virginia Woolf had triumphed for two reasons: much more of Fry's private life now can be told safely, and a thoroughgoing critical estimate ofhis art, criticism and scholarship is in order. Not that Woolf avoided the critical personal or evaluative issues; for instance, her passage on the madness which overtook Fry's wife, Helen, is crafted for truthfulness and delicacy, extraordinarily moving in view of Woolf's own fate, the fate which overtook Woolf despite the solicitude ofher husband. Roger Fry, it can only be said, did all that he could to help his wife; his patience and sympathy were indefatigable, his resourcefulness beyond belief. But her obsessions increased. And finally, when they came back to England in the spring the blow fell. Madness declared itself. "I was a fool to be happy yesterday", he wrote to R. C. Trevelyan.... (P. 103) Spalding adds new information to this (that physiological causes were discovered at autopsy in 1937) but, despite skilful writing sometimes sounding like Woolfs own, she can't come close to the evocative power ofthese words. -

How to Make Analogies in a Digital Age* WHITNEY DAVIS I will start with a truism even though, like all truisms, it reduces and con- flates distinctions and nuances to which I will need to revert: painting—in the sense of “painting as an art”—has been a classic analog mode of representation, whether or not every painter in the history of art has used it this way. It cannot be a surprise, then, that it might be specifically in painting—in its specifically painterly and pictorial achievements and reversions—that we might best be able to gauge the depth and direction of digital technologies of image production, as well as notions of phenomena, appearance, and representation associated with them in their theoretical foundation and recent history. I The best logical analysis of the analog property of painting as an art—for him, defining depiction as a symbol system—remains Nelson Goodman’s Languages of Art, published in 1968. John Halperin ., I Bloomsbury and Virginia WooH: Another VIew . i· "It had seemed to me ever since I was very young," Adrian Stephen wrote in The Dreadnought Hoax in 1936, "that anyone who took up an attitude of authority over anyone else was necessarily also someone who offered a leg to pull." 1 In 1910 Adrian and his sister Virginia and Duncan Grant and some of their friends dressed up as the Emperor of Abyssinia and his suite and perpetrated a hoax upon the Royal Navy. They wished to inspect the Navy's most modern vessel, they said; and the Naval officers on hand, completely fooled, took them on an elaborate tour of some top secret facilities aboard the HMS Dreadnought. When the "Dread nought Hoax," as it came to be called, was discovered, there were furious denunciations of the group in the press and even within the family, since some Stephen relations were Naval officers. One of them wrote to Adrian: "His Majesty's ships are not suitable objects for practical jokes." Adrian replied: "If everyone shared my feelings toward the great armed forces of the world, the world [might] be a happier place to live in . .. armies and suchlike bodies [present] legs that [are] almost irresistible." Earlier a similarly sartorial practical joke had been perpetrated by the same group upon the mayor of Cam bridge, but since he was a grocer rather than a Naval officer the Stephen family seemed unperturbed by this-which was not really a thumbing·of-the-nose at the Establishment. The Dreadnought Hoax was harder to forget. -

We speak of aesthetic experiences and judgments and qualities, and we employ “aesthetics” to designate the study of such matters. Although their root is taken from the Greek, the now-familiar terms (in their now-familiar usages) are, however, comparatively new. They are commonly regarded as having been introduced into the philosophical lexicon in the eighteenth century—a few hundred years ago. This course studies some of the texts that were key to the discovery, or perhaps the invention, of the “aesthetic”. What work was the idea meant to do? How did its evolution retain or reconfigure its original senses and purposes? Is the idea of the aesthetic problematic, ideological, or chimerical? Do we need an idea of the aesthetic to think about art? Texts All readings will be provided during the semester electronically and are to be brought to class as printouts. Electronic devices Students may not use any electronic devices (laptop, tablet, mobile phone) in the classroom, unless an accommodation letter has been issued. Roger Fry: Aligning Himself with the Half Idiot, Half Divine Sandra Boks, MA Curating the Art Museum ‘12 ‘I am not a great artist; I am only a serious artist with some sensitivity, enough taste and more intelligence than average painters.’ - Roger Fry, 1920 In his writings, Fry makes a distinction between great artists, serious artists and average painters. This suggests that there is some essential quality that Fry recognises in great artists but does not possess himself. Fry’s conception of the ideal artist was embodied by Paul Cézanne, whom he described as ‘the perfect realisation of the type of the artist’.1 He rejected the conventional idea of the artist celebrated by Giorgio Vasari during the Renaissance in order to create a new and modern characterisation of the artist. Before looking at Fry’s writings about Cézanne it is interesting to look at the type of the artist that he rejects in order for Cézanne to take its place. During the 16th century, Vasari valued artists not only for their artistic achievements but also principally for their intellectual abilities. He saw these two skills as essential to artistic success. Vasari regarded Michelangelo as the greatest artist of his time; he even elevated him to a divine being. In his introduction to Michelangelo in Lives of the Artists he writes: [God himself] wanted to join to this [artistic] spirit true moral philosophy and the gift of sweet poetry, so that the world would admire and prefer him for the wholly singular example of his life, his work, the holiness of his habits, and all his human undertakings.2 Michelangelo’s personal life and additional talents for philosophy and poetry were seen as inextricably intertwined with his artistic output, and the totality of this resulted in his reputation as a divine being. -

Collingwood & Bell on the Ontology of Art 1 Today we officially begin a unit on the ontology of art, Ø the attempt to answer the question “What is art?” Ø This question is ambiguous. Is it asking: • What is the nature of artworks?, or • What is the nature of the practice of art? Ø We are going to read these authors as if they are answering the question as a claim about artworks. Before discussing Collingwood’s & Bell’s answers, let’s consider a theoretical predecessor. • The earliest views about art we have on record are mimetic, or representational theories: – these say that artworks mimic & depict images/events from the real world. • As Shakespeare’s Hamlet says about plays, artworks were understood to “hold as ‘twere the ‘play within a play’ the mirror up to nature” (Act 3, Scene 2) in Hamlet 2 Representational views were common among the ancient Greeks (e.g. Plato), • and popularized in 18th century Europe (especially by Charles Batteaux, in “The Fine Arts Reduced to a Common Principle” (trans. from French) Why have representational theories of art fallen out of favor? Navorsingsartikels/Research articles The significance and insignificance of Clive Bell’s formalism i Johan Snyman Dept, of Philosophy Rand Afrikaans University JOHANNESBURG Abstract Clive Bell coined the phrase significant form. The way he initially defined the phrase and the way he implemented it were two different matters. In this article Bell's procedure is analysed as a characteristic of late moder nist aesthetics, i.e. an attempt to come to terms with the challenge o f the radically new in art. It is suggested that one should bear in mind that formalism in this sense is a theory of artistic material which explains how meaning is communicated and perceived through non-discursive qualities o f the artistic material. That is the relevance o f Susanne K. Longer's re- interpretation o f Bell's phrase. 1. Introduction Clive Bell’s aesthetics does not make for profound reading. Why bother then? The least one can say is that Bell contributed towards the modem aesthetic vocabulary by coining a phrase that has since become a cliché or hackneyed for that matter, viz. significant form. On the other hand, if one reflects from a distance on the Wirkungsgeschichte of Bell’s phrase as well as on the Wirkungs- geschichte of the problem he wanted to solve, significant form has an intriguing logic. Significant form as an aesthetic category has spawned quite a generation of related concepts, from Clive Bell to Susanne K. Langer’s unconsummated symbol, up to Nelson Goodman’s languages of art (Goodman, 1976), Peter A revised version of a paper read at a 2nd International Symposium on Formalism, organized by the Slovenian Society of Aesthetics in Ljubljana, 14-17 May 1992.
