This in turn has created a legacy of economic growth that has increased inequalities and expanded poverty.Simultaneously it has given unimaginable opportunities to a section of the growing consuming class.It has also paradoxically led to environmental degradation, deforestation and increasing pollution prompting questions of economic and ecological sustainability. While we remain an agrarian society, growth in agriculture has declined and peasant life has been destabilised. New cities and elite enclaves have emerged while some old ones have had got breath of new lives and others have died out organising this large urban population into informal modes of work, labour and housing.
