THE GREATEST SNOWMAN A Holiday Musical For Young Voices by Teresa Jennings & Karl Hitzemann Every 100 years, Santa Claus takes Christmas off. (Having been around the world thousands of times, he’s really looking forward to a staycation. Who could blame him?) The tricky part of this is, of course, finding a substitute to take over his Christmas Eve duties, namely delivering gifts to good little children all around the world – in one night. It’s a challenging task, and choosing the right replacement is equally challenging. Toward this end, Santa accepts applications and resumés from hundreds of candidates that he must then sort through. Surely one of them is great enough to win the honor. As our story begins, some of the final candidates are interviewing for the job. Amongst them, we see expected characters like reindeer and elves, but we also note that there are other animals such as polar bears, tigers, and even penguins in line. Not to miss an opportunity, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy decide to try their luck as well. (Even the New Year’s baby, Cupid, a leprechaun, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty, a pumpkin, a turkey, and a pilgrim are rumored to make an optional cameo in the scene.) Santa certainly has a difficult decision to make! At the end of the line, we see a little snowman standing alone. A rather shy and quiet character, he seems to be the subject of some disagreeable comments from the others. They are quite rude and imply that he hasn’t got a snowball’s chance of getting the job. He is not daunted by their bullying, and in fact, only sends them loving thoughts in return. Santa witnesses the exchange and is touched by the snowman’s big heart and gentle nature, despite the unpleasant circumstances. As you might imagine (since this is a happy, positive message musical), Santa is so impressed that he chooses the snowman to take his place on Christmas Eve. Not only is he found to be great enough for the honor, he truly is… the greatest. As with all of our revues and musicals, there is a thoughtfully designed Teacher’s Guide, with lots of suggestions for making a great performance. Also included are reproducible Singer’s Parts, lyric sheets, posters, and program covers. The Greatest Snowman is sure to be a hit with your audience. It includes these five original songs: Every Hundred Years, Santa Takes A Break; Pick Me, Me, Me!; Snowman, Why Are You Here?; Jolly Old Words To Live By; and The Greatest Season. REJOICE! IT’S CHRISTMAS Carols Old & New For Young Voices by John Riggio, Mike Wilson, and Karl Hitzemann Through the years, our great team of composers and arrangers has produced striking, memorable Christmas music including unique arrangements of favorite carols. They have filled the pages of the second issue of MUSIC K-8 magazine, making them highly sought-after publications. In this collection, we have assembled some of our best-loved songs from recent years for the next Christmas performance by your choir or congregation. While they are primarily designed for young voices, they are ideal for use with smaller choirs or with groups that have limited rehearsal time for each performance. Includes: • O Come All Ye Faithful - Here’s a spirited rendition of a classic Christmas carol. Subscribers love John’s Celtic arrangements and we think this one is a great addition to the genre. It features a rockin’ rhythm section, lots of drums, strings, fiddle, and penny whistle. • On The Road To Bethlehem - Religious Christmas tune or a pretty winter song... You’ve got the option with “On The Road To Bethlehem”/“Sing A Song This Winter Night.” With two sets of lyrics (the secular winter lyrics are in italics), we used a “We Three Kings” feel for this 2-part round that’s really easy to learn. The first time is unison and the second time is where the round begins. The bridge is back to unison, then it’s a round and 2-part to the end. • Il Est Né - This is a lovely French Christmas carol that has been a favorite of many for decades. Our arrangement has a bright, gentle feel to it, featuring an accompaniment of piano, bass, guitar, and strings. We only used the first phrase from the original carol, “Il est né le Divin Enfant,” which means “He is born, the Divine Child.” A handy pronunciation guide is also included. The rest of the lyrics are in English and are original. • The Holly And The Ivy - Here’s a non-traditional arrangement of a traditional Christmas carol. It starts out gently with piano, bass, and a synth choir sound. Then it starts to build, adding an optional solo, nylon guitar melody, and a low, evolving analog synth. Next comes the string section, sleigh bells, and electric guitar solo, and finally the full band with ballad rock drums and singers. It’s beautifully emotional and powerful. • Good Christian Men, Rejoice - A classic old carol with origins dating back to the 14th century, this is a familiar and uplifting tune that really captures the spirit of Christmas. Our arrangement includes unison vocals and a rhythm band ensemble made up of finger cymbals, triangle, hand drum, and jingle bells. The recorded accompaniment features a wonderful brass choir. • Alleluia, Hodie Alleluia - Here is an energetic Christmas selection for your older singers. We’ve set this in a 3-part voicing with part 3 being accessible to your lower, changing, and changed voices. It can also be performed as a unison piece using part 1 only. • Ding Dong! Merrily On High - The song has a great melody, dating back to the 1500s, and it’s downright cheerful to sing. Arranged in a Celtic style, it is laiden with big drums, penny whistle, fiddle, strings, a celeste, and a generous blend of jingle bells and sleigh bells. Listen to sound excerpts online. SING THIS MAGIC SEASON Songs For Young Voices by Teresa & Paul Jennings Teresa Jennings has created some of the best original holiday music ever written for children to sing. It is especially notable that her tunes cover a wide variety of styles, all of them authentic sounding and full of creative lyrics. When you hear excerpts of these songs on our web site, you’ll know what we mean. This is music that your singers will enjoy and ask to sing regularly. And it’s music that you will come back to in future years because even though they are new, the songs have a timeless feel that always makes them fun to sing. Sing This Magic Season includes: • This Magic Season - This extremely pleasant song will work well as an opener or featured big tune in your Christmas, holiday, winter, or seasonal performances. The lyrics underscore that sense of a “feeling” more than anything tangible. Written in cut time, the tune clips along pretty quickly, though it maintains a rather relaxed groove. It has a lot of energy, but it’s understated. • Santa, What A Guy - Set in a swing style reminiscent of the ’50s and ’60s, the big band arrangement is what really makes this cook. This chart modulates several times, but it is all unison and quite doable.

In this thesis, we address the problem of modeling musical influence using a dataset of 143,625 audio files and a ground truth expert-curated network graph of artist-to-artist influence consisting of 16,704 artists scraped from AllMusic.com. We explore two audio content-based approaches to modeling influence: first, we take a topic modeling approach, specifically using the Document Influence Model (DIM) to infer artist-level influence on the evolution of musical topics. We find the artist influence measure derived from this model to correlate with the ground truth graph of artist influence. Second, we propose an approach for classifying artist-to-artist influence using siamese convolutional neural networks trained on mel-spectrogram representations of song audio. We find that this approach is promising, achieving an accuracy of 0.7 on a validation set, and we propose an algorithm using our trained siamese network model to rank influences.

  • Christian Church in Ohio 2018 Advent Devotional
Christian Church in Ohio DISCIPLES OF CHRIST A covenant network of congregations in mission: We are the Body of Christ gifted and called in covenant together as Disciples of Christ to be centers of transformation on the new mission frontier of our own communities 2018 Advent Devotional First Day of Advent Sunday, December 2nd Advent Lighting Please read Jeremiah 33:14-16 Advent is a time of expectation, and this is symbolized not only by the four-week period of preparation, but also by the lighting of an Advent candle on each Sunday of the season. The flame of each new candle reminds the worshiper that something is happening, but something more is still to come. The Advent season will not be complete until all four candles are lighted, with the central Christ candle also burning brightly on Christmas Eve. The tradition of the Advent wreath is traced back to an old Scandinavian custom that celebrated the coming of light after a season of darkness. In that day candles were placed on the edge of a horizontal wheel. As the wheel was spun around, the lighted candles would blend into a continuous circle of light. Today we use a circle of evergreen to remind us of the continuous power of God, which knows no beginning nor ending. There is also symbolism in the colors of the candles in the Advent wreath. The three purple, or white, candles symbolize the coming of Christ from the royal line of David. He is coming as the King of Kings as well as the Prince of Peace.
