(ii) FOREWORD

It has been said that apart from the S~rvey of India and the Geological Survey of India, the Census of India has been perhaps the largest single producer of maps of the Indian sub-continent. The Census Organization has published Census Atlas volumes during 1961, 1 971 and 198 1. The Census Centenary Atlas was published during 1973 as a special project. Besides the Atlases, maps of districts, tahsils, community development blocks and other administrative units showing basic amenities, population and infrastructure are being published regularly in each Census.

The idea of the Atlas was conceived for the first time at the 1961 -Census and a special programme of the Census Atlas mapping was organized. In this programme, Census Atlases of States and Union Territories were brought out. This publication programme has been much appreciated by data users and academicians alike.

The present volume is part of the Census Atlas series of states and union territories. The list of titles of the maps has been generated on the basis of the tabulation plan for the 1991 Census. One hundred and twenty five themes were identified. The number of maps included in the Atlas Volumes varies from state to state to some extent depending upon the availability of data. The maps in the Atlas volumes portray different themes. There are maps of administrative and physical aspects reflecting the general characteristics of the State followed by maps on demographic, ecollomic and socio-cultural aspects consisting of distribution, density and growth of population, age and sex, urban trends, industrial categories, migration, literacy, religion, scheduled castes and schedules tribes, education and housing.

The choropleth technique has been adopted for the presentation of data in the maps. However, multi cartographic techniques have also been used frequently depending upon the suitability and requirement of the maps as well as data.

The work on the Atlas programme was undertaken by the officers and staff of the Map Division in the Registrar General's office and the Map of the Directorat-es of Census Operations. A list of those who have contributed to the completion _of the work is given separately and all of them deserve appreciation. I hope the Census Atlas volumes will be found useful by scholars, planners, administrators and other data users.

PREFACE

The immense importance of maps in the different phases of Census operations need not be emphasized. The maps incorporated in this Atlas depict a variety of demographic, socio-economic and socio-cultural aspects of the people of Mizoram such as distribution of population, density, sex ratio, literacy, religious compositions, population in the working age, workers and non-workers, number of hospital beds per 1000 population, proportions of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe population, teachers per 1000 population etc. In addition there are two general maps on administrative divisions and soils.

Though most of the data used for the preparation of this Atlas are mainly based on the 1991 Census, still I could not have completed the job of bringing out this valuable publication without the co-operation of various departments of State Government, who provided useful data. I therefore thank them for this kind co-operation in this regard.

The number of maps included in this volume has been restricted to only 32 due to non-availability of data on many aspects.

The preparation of the Atlas Volume started during the tenure of my predecessor, Shri R.S. Meena, Dy. Director, Directorate of Census Operations, Mizoram and under his guidance most of the experimental maps were completed.

This Census Atlas Volume is the second product of the efforts of my 5taff and in particular Shri lalnghinglova, Artist and Shri lalrova, Draftsman, Publication of the 1991 Census Atlas marks the beginning of an effort in the direction of cartographic representation of Census and non-census data in Mizoram.

I am highly indebted to the Registrar General, India Dr. M. Vijayanunni, LA.S. and Dr. R.P. Singh, Asstt. Registrar General (Map) for their unfailing help and guidance in completing this Atlas Volume.
