Unveiling Children’s Imagination The ICAF Exhibitions since 1998 Art produced by children is the most honest and purest form of human creative expressions. As an embodiment of their imagination, child art unveils the underlying creativity and perspectives that will shape the future. The viewing of art produced by children can awaken the “inner child” – curios, creative, compassionate, and courageous. “Children’s America Mural” at the World Children’s Festival on The National Mall in Washington, DC in September 1999. • Problem Statement Two Trends, Each Propitious on Its Own, Could Spell
Problem Statement Two trends, each propitious on its own, could spell disaster for the world since they are concurrent. First, advances in automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning will boost productivity but these new technologies can also bring a job-eliminating tsunami. Second, the recent youth bulge has swelled populations under 15 to 41% in Africa and 26% in the world, while world population is projected to grow to nearly 10 billion by 2050. An energetic workforce will boost productivity but what happens when the young have no jobs? The unemployed millions may try to migrate northwards—from Africa to Europe and from Central and South America to the United States and Canada, causing new social disruptions and revival of nativism of old. Violence is already getting worse across the world and its economic impact reached $14.8 trillion, according to the 2018 Global Peace Index report. In the United States, more than 215,000 children have experienced gun violence at school since the Columbine High massacre in 1999, as reported by the Washington Post. Unlike the 20th century when progress was chiefly intelligence-based, prosperity this century is primarily creativity-driven. Creativity kindles ideation and invention, which fuels new business development so the young entrepreneurs can gainfully employ themselves as well as others. Essential though for collaborative innovation and social harmony is empathy because it breeds mutuality and makes compromise tolerable. Creativity and empathy are hence salient human attributes. Their development, however, must start with schoolchildren—before the well-documented “4th-grade slump” in their creativity gains a foothold or ingrained prejudices discolor their “mirror neurons” responsible for empathy.

  • The ICAF Fact Sheet
Fact Sheet 4 July 11 Our nation‟s increasingly complex problems cry out for creative solutions. But creativity is in short supply and may become scarce if not nurtured in childhood. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) has served since 1997 as the art and creativity organization for American children and their international counterparts. The ICAF‟s concerted efforts to foster children‟s creative development re-ignite American ingenuity and lay the building blocks for intercultural understanding and collaborative innovation. The Children Child artists in Uganda India and in Washington DC Nigeria Sri Lanka “Children are the world‟s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” - President John F. Kennedy Mission To employ the power of the arts for the development of children‟s innate creativity and intrinsic empathy – preconditions for a better world. Approach • Provide free innovative programs and creativity- enhancing experiences that engage children to explore their world and their place in it • Develop programs that grow imagination (Arts Olympiad), reduce violence (Peace through Art) and remediate suffering (Healing Arts) • Publish a world class, ad-free periodical for children‟s creative development • Break prevalent stereotypes by introducing children to the “artist-athlete” ideal of a creative mind and healthy body • Produce the World Children‟s Festival every four years in Washington, DC as America‟s international children‟s event that integrates art and sport with STEM disciplines to provide early training for children to become creative leaders in their communities, prepared to collaborate for innovation and positive social change “What you are doing reflects such a refreshingly integrated view of children's development -- a much-needed perspective in a time when children's growth and learning often seem to be approached in a very reductionist, fragmented way.” - Dr.

  • Did You Know When a Child Starts to Lose His Or Her Creativity, It May Be Lost Forever?
Fact Sheet 15 Dec 10 Did you know when a child starts to lose his or her creativity, it may be lost forever? The longitudinal and cross-cultural studies conducted by E. Paul Torrance (regarded as “father of creativity”) discovered the 4th-grade slump in creativity. When children begin school their level of creativity is flourishing and evident, but by the time they reach 4th-grade, they are more conforming, less likely to take risks, and less playful or spontaneous than in earlier years. This trend in behavior continues throughout the school years and into adulthood. The arts convey a dynamic medium and cost-effective channel for the development of children’s creativity, and possesses a distinct communicative power that can ease the development of empathy in children. The Children Child artists in Uganda India and in Washington DC Nigeria Sri Lanka Mission To employ the arts for the development of children’s innate creativity and intrinsic empathy – preconditions for sustainable prosperity and peace. Strategy An integrated approach that focuses on the 8 to 12 age group statistically known to be at risk with their natural creativity threatened. Design and organize art-based programs that fuel children’s imagination and help awaken their need to learn to nurture their own creativity over their lifetime. Encourage communication amongst children and reap the benefits of peer-to- peer learning by employing the visual arts as a shared universal language. Approach • Provide free innovative programs and creativity- enhancing experiences that engage
