Consequently, nautical fiction as a category of writing can hardly be traced in the history of Indian literature. Nautical fiction as a substantial body of writing emerged from Anglo-American history of maritime experience. This paper is an attempt to perceive Amitav Ghosh’s novel, Sea of Poppies as an Indian response to the sub-genre. -

Transnationalism and expatriate political engagement: The case of the Italian and French voting in Australia Dr Maryse Helbert Maryse joined Melbourne University and completed her PhD in international Relations and Political Economy in 2016. Prior to that, she was an advocate for and research on women’s participation in politics and decision-making for over a decade. She is now focusing on teaching and research in the fields of political Science and International Relations. Assoc. Professor Bruno Mascitelli Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne Prior to joining Swinburne University of Technology, Bruno was employed by the Australian Consulate in Milan, Italy where he spent 18 years. In 1997 he joined Swinburne University and has since focused his teaching and research in areas related to European Studies. This has included four books on Italy and its expatriate community abroad looking at expatriate voting in particular. He is President of the European Studies Association in Australia. Abstract The aim of this paper is to provide an appreciation and analysis of the expatriate connectivity of Italian and the French citizens from their place of residency in Australia through their respective elections in their home country election. Specifically, the paper will examine the cases of Italians in Australia voting in the 2013 Italian elections and equally that of French citizens in Australia voting in the French Presidential and the following Legislative Elections in 20171. The paper examines the voting patterns there might be between those voting in the home country (Italy and France) and those voting in external electoral colleges in this case the relevant Australian college. -

American Literary Expatriates in Europe Professor Glenda R. Carpio Ca’ Foscari-Harvard Summer School 2017 TF: Nicholas Rinehart This course explores the fiction and travel literature produced by American writers living in Europe, from the late 19th century to the present. In the course of this period Europe becomes the battlefield for two bloody World Wars as well as the site of a museum past while the USA assumes a dominant role on the world stage. American writers living and traveling in Europe reflect on these shifts and changes while also exploring the various forms of freedom and complex set of contradictions that expatriate life affords. We will focus on American literature set in Europe with readings that include but are not limited to essays, travelogues, poems, novellas, novels, and short stories. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Active participation in the course; two critical essays (5-7 pages) and a third (also 5-7 pages) that may be creative or a revision of a previous assignment (see below); and an in-class presentation. Class Presentations: Throughout the semester, I will ask you to prepare short class presentations of no more than 10 minutes (NB: you will be timed and stopped if you go over the limit) based on close readings of particular passages of the texts we read. Presentations may be done individually or in pairs. You will receive more information on this method as the semester develops. Critical Essays: Two of the three essays required for this class should be critical explorations of texts and/or topics covered in class. These should be based on close analyses of specific passages and may include the secondary recommended material indicated in the syllabus. -

Lord Jim, by Joseph Conrad AUTHOR'S NOTE When this novel first appeared in book form a notion got about that I had been bolted away with. Some reviewers maintained that the work starting as a short story had got beyond the writer's control. One or two discovered internal evidence of the fact, which seemed to amuse them. They pointed out the limitations of the narrative form. They argued that no man could have been expected to talk all that time, and other men to listen so long. It was not, they said, very credible. After thinking it over for something like sixteen years, I am not so sure about that. Men have been known, both in the tropics and in the temperate zone, to sit up half the night 'swapping yarns'. This, however, is but one yarn, yet with interruptions affording some measure of relief; and in regard to the listeners' endurance, the postulate must be accepted that the story was interesting. It is the necessary preliminary assumption. If I hadn't believed that it was interesting I could never have begun to write it. As to the mere physical possibility we all know that some speeches in Parliament have taken nearer six than three hours in delivery; whereas all that part of the book which is Marlow's narrative can be read through aloud, I should say, in less than three hours. Besides--though I have kept strictly all such insignificant details out of the tale--we may presume that there must have been refreshments on that night, a glass of mineral water of some sort to help the narrator on. -

Maritime Power and Struggle For Freedom: Naval Campaigns that Shaped the Modern World 1788-1851 Purpose of this Course: The open oceans of this planet were the great common areas around which Europeans and their social/cultural progeny created what they proclaimed to be the “modern world.” At the heart of this creation lay the European- dominated economic system that depended upon access to and reasonably unfettered use of the sea. This course looks at the development of that system during the period known as the “Age of Sail.” Course topics include the maritime aspects of European exploration of the world, the development of ships and navigational technology, naval developments, general maritime economic theory, and maritime cultural history. Course Requirements and Grading Policies: Students will take three (3) major exams. In addition, they will write two (2) book reviews. All will be graded on a strict 100-point scale. The final will NOT be comprehensive. Graduate Students: Graduate students taking this class will write a 20-page historiographical paper in lieu of the two undergraduate book reviews. This manual contains everything you will need to prepare your class for the Age of Sail overnight program as well as some supplemental in- formation, should you elect to use it. I have updated and streamlined the manual this year and I hope that it is more intuitive and accessible than ever before. We have found that the most successful outcomes occur when teachers connect their fieldtrip to the State Content Standards and Frameworks. Math, Science, Mu- sic, Literature, Language, Theatre, Visual Arts as well as History and Social Sci- ence are all important themes in the Age of Sail program and the manual contains a number of optional activities and projects within these disciplines, should you elect to use them. There are also excellent teacher resources online at www.nps.gov/safr If you or any of the parents are interested in more training we offer one day Par- ent/Teacher Workshops on the first Saturday of every month, from September to May. A History of Seafaring in the Age of Sail HITO 178 University of California, San Diego Winter, 2015 Professor Mark Hanna Tuesdays, 12:00-2:50 (or all afternoon) Office: H&SS #4059 Room: H&SS #4025, “Galbraith Room” [email protected] Office Hours: Wednesday 1:15-3:00 A whale ship was my Yale College and my Harvard -Herman Melville, Moby Dick The sea is a hostile environment unfit for human habitation yet for centuries people have risked their lives to travel the oceans. What makes people take to the sea and how did they manage the dangers and difficulties of shipboard life? Life at sea is at times radically different than life on land or it can magnify the struggles we all face (food, water, social peace and cohesion). The sea is a contested space where the laws that govern nation states do not always apply. Many people took to the sea not of their own choosing but through some form of kidnapping and bondage. This course forces students to imagine existence on a whole other plane of being afar from what they are accustomed. How does one survive at sea? What kind of social world is born out of close confinement in trying conditions? Taught in conjunction with the San Diego Maritime Museum and the UCSD Special Collections Library, this course investigates life at sea from the age of discovery to the advent of the steamship. We will investigate discovery, technology, piracy, fisheries, commerce, naval conflict, and seaboard life and seaport activity. Readings -W. Hornblower's Ships
Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him. -

Dearly Departed, Yet, Returned: Traversing the Nautical Gothic in The Touching and Melancholy Narrative of Marian Moore (1853) Danielle Cofer Abstract: Scholars have explored the genres of Shipwreck narratives, women’s writings about life at sea, and the nautical Gothic. Bringing these fields together in conversation with Marian Moore’s The Touching and Melancholy Narrative of Marian Moore, the Shipwrecked Female Sailor (1853) reveals tensions between horrifying experiences with shipwreck and subsequent cannibalism at sea and life on land for women in the mid-nineteenth century. Moore details her encounters with death throughout, which ultimately prepare her for the prolonged social death she endures once back on land ensnared in class and gender conventions. The irony of Moore’s narrative is that the threat of the sea proves to be far less harrowing than the entrapment of static domesticity. Instead of being the place of danger and death, the sea becomes a source of knowledge and a sanctuary from the true horror of the social conditions Moore contends with back on land. ____________________ Nautical fiction and narratives of sea travel resonated with nineteenth-century American audiences because they carried with them the fulfillment of flights of fantasy and the romance of exploration that could be read from the safety of one’s home. Indeed, “a desire for the physical and mental freedom of open ocean experience” permeates many sea narratives, fulfilling “the blue-water fantasies of men and women who ride ferries or sail yachts alongshore.”1 Yet, even beyond escapism and the promise of experiencing a different lifestyle or landscape amongst the waves and ocean swells, audiences sought much more than just knowledge of a mariner’s or seafarer’s firsthand account of maritime life.
