Waypoints Start Point (52.64816; -1.20365) From the Stamford Street car park turn left into Stamford Street and right into Station Road. Walk past the Co-op and Railway Hotel and then, in a short distance, turn left onto the dismantled Leicester to Swannington Railway line. Continue to where the track crosses Barrow Lane, next to the TNT depot. Railway (52.65375; -1.19893) 1 / 4 This path is on the route of the former Leicester to Swannington Railway from West Bridge Station. Leicester to Desford and Coalville. The line, engineered by Robert Stephenson, opened in 1832 and carried coal from the Leicestershire coalfield and granite horn the Groby quarries. Passenger trains serving Glenfield, Ratby and Desford ceased in 1928 and the line finally closed in 1966. Barrow Lane (52.65109; -1.20956) Turn right and take the field path up the hill and continue ahead to cross the A46 on the footbridge. Cross Sacheverall Way with care and enter Stamford Memorial Park through the gate. Turn right and then bear left at the Stamford FC memorial and continue around the edge of the park past the Stamford Drive car park to reach the Sycamore Drive car park. Continue forward across Sycamore Drive and pass through the footpath entrance. Cross the first field and take the exit at the top left of the second field onto Meadow Court Road. Continue to the end of the road then turn left, taking the footpath between the houses onto Pymm Ley Close. Continue to the end of this road then turn right onto Pymm Ley Lane and continue ahead to its junction with Leicester Road. Memorial (52.65716; -1.21608) The Stamford Memorial is a tribute to five Stamford Arms footballers who died in a tragic road accident on December 7th 1998. Leicester Road (52.66210; -1.22265) Turn left onto Leicester Road and continue forward to the Stamford Arms. Turn left onto Ratby Road and then second left onto Crane Ley Road. Almost immediately bear right onto Chapel Hill, follow it round and take the path down the hill by the allotments. Continue forward to take the path between the houses to join Glebe Road. Glebe Road (52.65939; -1.22815) Turn right and follow the road round to the left then turn first right onto Oaktree Close. Justbefore joining Ratby Road tum left and continue ahead on the dismantled Groby Mineral Railway line to join Sacheverall Way. Tum right and 2 / 4 walk part way up the slope then cross the road to take the signed footpath across the field and cross the Ml motorway. Granite Railway (52.65834; -1.23130) The Groby Granite Railway was completed in 1832 to link the Groby quarries via the Leicester and Swannington Railway and onwards to Leicester. It opened in 1832, just before the Leicester and Swannington and was thus one of the earliest railways in the Midlands, if not the country. The line was designed with help from George Stevenson and his son Robert. It was used to carry granite from the Groby quarries to Glenfield, where it was transferred onto the Leicester & Swannington Railway, atsidings just past the Ml motorway bridge over the Leicester and Swannington Railway in Ratby, tor onward shipment to wharves at Leicester West Bridge. The granite was then loaded onto barges and shipped to London. Harrison Close (52.64983; -1.23533) After about 50 metres take the first exit on the left onto Harrison Close, Continue to the end, turn right and then almost immediately left onto Church Ponds Close. Continue through the gate and turn right to enter Ferndale Park through the hedge. Continue past the play areas to left and right and then bear right to walk along the right hand edge of the park. Exit the park through the gate and continue forward along the footpath. Return (52.64442; -1.23295) At the end of the road turn right and then, after a short distance, tum left onto the dismantled Leicester to Swannington Railway line and continue back towards Glenfield passing under the Ml and M6 bridges. Tum right just after the TNT depot onto Barrow Lane and continue to the end. Turn left at The Forge lnn and continue to Glenfield Square. Return to Stamford Road car park. 3 / 4 4 / 4.
