Ø Reorganization of the School of English The School of English has been reorganized into two departments: English Language and Literature (ELL) and Applied English Language and Translation Studies (AELTS). Through this reorganization, students will be offered greater balance and competitiveness in their various majors and prospective careers. Intellectual and pedagogical exchanges between ELL and AELTS will make a significant contribution to the overall quality of English language at Kyung Hee .

Ø 2018 Humanities Forum The Humanities Forum encourages in-depth scholarly research and the sharing of new academic projects with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. In the first semester of 2018, three faculty members, including new professor Sung-Beom Ahn from the Department of and Literature, will discuss their research projects with the humanities community. The 2018 Humanities Forum will continue throughout the academic year with an engaging line-up of monthly presenters.

Ø Winter Overseas Training Program An Overseas Training Program was conducted during the 2017 winter vacation period in order to explore the relationship between global knowledge and the particularities of various majors. 56 students from three departments were sent to Taiwan (Korean, History) and Japan (Philosophy), where they developed their language skills and broadened their understanding of their major through attendance at a local university. Through the Overseas Training Program, students acquired greater global knowledge through a rigorous engagement with local cultures.

Ø2017 Scholarship Beneficiaries During the second semester of 2017, scholarships were given to 258 students in three categories: Academic Excellence, Bright-Society, and Study Abroad. Academic Excellence scholarships for superior grades were given to 165 students; Bright-Society scholarships were given to 37 students; scholarships for Study Abroad were given to 56 students.

Ø The 8th Career Coaching Day

In order to improve students' employment rate while creating a sense of community for undergraduate humanities majors, the 8th "Career Coaching Day" was held on October 30th. Ji-Hyun Kim, student representative of the College of Humanities, presided over this event. A distinguished group of alumni visited our campus for the event: Seong-Min Park (Korean ’00, King Sejong Institute); Hyung-Jin Ahn (History ’06, Teacher of Yunsul Middle School Teacher); Jin-Yeop Kim (Philosophy ’10; PoliticalPowerPlant), Moon-Sook Han (English ’00, Munhakdongne Publishing). Through their attendance at the Coaching Day, students learned real-world job-seeking skills while exploring employment possibilities in a wide variety of fields.

- 2 - Ø 2018 Graduation Ceremony A graduation ceremony was held on February 13, 2018. Ga-bi Jo (Korean ’14) won the University Presidential Prize as the highest scoring student. Un Back (Korean '12) won the Dean's Prize. So-Hee Kim (Korean ’13), Seung-Hee Oh (English 13), and Sun-Hyun Park (English’12) all received excellence awards. The ceremony created an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of these exceptional students.

Ø2018 Freshman Orientation On February 23-25, an Orientation Camp for freshmen was held at Hane Thema Park in HwaSeong, Gyeonggi-do. The camp began with a welcoming ceremony and introduction of professors in each major. With an exciting and diverse schedule of events, participants were able to both share and learn new information while taking a tour of the campus. The camp worked to elevate incoming students' attachment to the university and strengthen the cohesion amongst members of the humanities community.

ØFall 2017 Institute of Humanities Conference On October 26, 2017, the Institute of Humanities Conference was held under the theme of "Letters and Modern Civilization.” Under the leadership of President In-Sung Jo and Philosophy Professor In-Chul Park, who is the leader of BK21PLUS, five presentations were offered, including: Gun-Wook Lee, “The Cultural History and Application of Letter- Electonic Experiments at the National of Letters" (Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism); Yang-Jin Kim, "Re-evaluation of Manchu language in Modern East Asian Civilization" (Professor of History)

Ø Remodeling College of Humanities and Buildings The College of Humanities and Sciences buildings are being remodeled. On the first floor, there will be new study and seminar rooms, cafeteria areas, and spaces that support postgraduate studies and research. The student council room, formerly on the second floor, will be moved to the first floor. On the second floor, there will be an Applied English Language & Translation Studies office and seminar room, as well as two large seminar rooms. Club rooms and the student council room will be used as lecture rooms. During the summer vacation in 2018, the construction will be carried out in the small assembly hall and the professor lounge on the first floor.

In order to help students deepen their knowledge of their major and intellectual capabilities, the department held an 11-day training program at the University of Kaohsiung from January 21-31, 2017. Participants improved their language skills through exchanges with local students and attended lectures on the history and culture of Taiwan. One participant commented, "It was a great opportunity to have cultural interaction with Taiwanese friends through this training program."

Ø 2017 Paper Presentation The 2017 Paper Presentation was held in the KHU Library Audiovisual Room on December 1, 2017. Ten student teams took part in the presentation and received awards based on several categories: Grand Award (two teams); Excellence Award (three teams); and Participation Award (four teams). Through their paper presentations, students were inspired to pursue academic excellence in their major through rigorous and creative academic research.

Ø The Night of National Literature On December 7, 2017, "The Night of National Literature" was held in the Crown Building. The event included the executive members of the Department of Korean Language & Literature, the Union Club, and the Seminar Union, who discussed their various accomplishments this semester. Future executive members also had a chance to be approved by students of the department. Finally, club members prepared a celebration ceremony so that professors had a chance to bond with students.

Ø Overseas Training inin Taiwan

From January 22 to February 1, 2017, 14 students from the History Department participated in the Overseas Training Program at the University of Kaohsiung. Students gained a deeper understanding of the history of China and Taiwan while touring historically important locations. Through their cultural excursions, students experienced a profound and heightened sense of solidarity.

Ø 2017 Autumn Regular Field Trip

The Regular Field Trip was held from September 20-22 under the theme of “Strife on the Korean Peninsula.” Students traveled to several historical sites in Jeolla-Do, including Jukjusanseong Fortress, Ban-Gye Historical site, Hwangtohyeon Battlefield, Naju National Museum, May 18th National Cemetery, and the Mokpo Japanese Consulate. Students explored the meanings of democracy, history, and the struggle for change. After the trip, a debate was conducted by professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students in order to reflect on their experiences. This trip provided a chance to promote students' passion for learning while building a sense of community.

Ø Special Archeology Lecture The Special Lecture on Archaeology was held on January 16, 2017, under the direction of the Institute of Ancient History and Archaeology at , on the subject of "The Present Situation and Education of Siberian Archaeology.” Through this lecture, students were able to broaden their understanding of northern archaeology. Ø The Night of Philosophy

On November 11, 2017, "The Night of Ph of the Philosophy" was held in the Crown Building. The event included the Department of Philosophy, the Union Club, and the Union Seminar. The event also included a retirement ceremony for professor Su-Joong Kim, so it was a memorable evening for the faculty and students.

Ø BK21Plus Special Lecture During the second semester of 2017, a special lecture brought philosophy faculty from other to our campus. Dr. Seung-Hak Ko (Geumgang University), Dr. Soo-Mi Lee (), and Dr. Kyung-Rae Kim (Dongguk University) all discussed major issues in the field of Buddhist philosophy, while Dr. Pun-Sil Lee ( National University) engaged the field of analytic philosophy. Through these lectures, professors and students explored a wide range of philosophical positions and problems. Ø 2017 Philia Conference The 2017 Philia Conference held on December 2nd in Ovis Hall. The conference was attended by undergraduate students from Kyung Hee University, , Dongguk University, Seoul National University, and Chungbuk National University. Through this unique event, students expanded their intellectual horizons by engaging each other through thoughtful dialogue.

The BK21Plus Participating Workers Excellence Award Ceremony was held on November 15, 2017, in the YonseiFoundation Severance Building conference room. Woo- Seok (Philosophy ’15) received an award under the themes of “Dream for the Future” and “My Growth Story”.

Ø Special Lecture on English Literature

"The Special Lecture on English Literature,” an annual event organized by English Literature majors, was held on November 9, 2017, in the College of Humanities. Tae-Hyun Kim (English 1977), who is the CEO of Elizabeth Arden Korea, gave a lecture on the subject of "Probable Success Strategy.” The content of the lecture was based on his book “Mastery Power” and focussed on individuals’ attitudes toward the future and strategies for success in a competitive job environment. Through this lecture, students received detailed career coaching from a successful and inspiring corporate leader.

Ø English InterpretationInterpretation & Translation Guest Speaker

A special seminar for English Interpretation & Translation majors was held on November 13 in the Cheongun Building. The guest, professor Bryan Cheron of the Humanitas College, introduced TNKR, a nonprofit organization that teaches English to North Korean defectors under the theme of "Human Rights in .” Through this lecture, students examined human rights and the perception of defectors in both and the international community. Through one-on-one counseling, students gained a new appreciation of their major.

- 7 - Ø The Night of English Literature The Night of English Literature was held on November 23, 2017, in the College of Humanities. The presentations included “Laziness” by Young-Sung Lee (English 2012); “A Letter of Franz Kafka” by Sang-Wook Cho (English 2011); “The Desires of the Universe” by Seung-Mo Heo (English 2012); “I Can Speak” by Han-Sol Jang (English 2012). Professors asked challenging questions which encouraged the presenters to complicate and refine their ideas. ◉ Department of Korean Language & Literature Appoints a New Professor On March 1, 2018, professor Sung-Bum Ahn was appointed as a new professor in the Department of Korean Language and Literature. Professor Ahn, who received his Ph.D. from our graduate school, teaches and conducts research in the field of media studies, focusing on the circulation “cultural contents.” Faculty Update

◉ Prpfesspr Jong-Bok Kim Ministry of Education Award Professor Jong-Bok Kim (English) received an “Academic Research Support Project” from the Ministry of Education for 2017. Professor Kim’s book, "The Syntactic Structures of Korean: A Construction Grammar Perspective,” was published by Cambridge University Press, UK. By providing a linguistic analysis of major syntactic and semantic phenomena and the computational implications of the Korean language, this important book has contributed greatly to the processing of the Korean language, which is essential for the globalization of Korean language studies in the AI period.

◉ Department of Philosophy, Hee-rim Kim (’14), “Anyway, Sell Philosophy”

Mr. Kim published a variety of articles on the philosophy of “philosophy gag” on Facebook and has acquired more than 10,000 subscribers. He expressed his willingness to do philosophy regardless of what society thinks. He said that he wanted many people to read his posts because they contained contents that address anxieties and worries that many readers can relate to.

◉ Department of English, Soo-Jin Park (’15), 2nd Prize in LION Young Poem Contest Soo-Jin Park won second prize by reciting Percy Bysshe Shelley's “Ode to West Wind” at the 3rd ProQuest LION Young Poetry Contest hosted by international publisher ProQuest, Korea. ProQuest LION is an annual literary contest held for LION users. It is a specialized English-language database that provides more than 35,000 literary works, journals, reviews, and poetry recitals from the 8th century to the present. We would like to congratulate Park Soo-Jin for her excellent work and dedication through which she has gained a deeper understanding of British and American literature.
