:50-Luke 24 Easter Sunday April 12, 2020 Cody Busick Vineyard KC WEST

Luke 23:50-Luke 24:12 50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for ' body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. 55 The women who had come with Jesus from followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 'The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was , Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

THE ANCHOR ALL CHRISTIAN BELIEF AND HOPE (1 Cor. 15:3-5) 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared…

The Facts: 1 • Christ died for our sins. (Foretold by Ancient Hebrew Scripture/Old Testament) (v.3) • Christ was buried. (Jesus was really dead) (v.4) • Christ rose from the grave on the third day (Foretold by Ancient Hebrew Scripture/Old Testament) (v.4) • Christ appeared to people after he rose from the dead. (v.5)

WONDER AND HOPE FOR RESCUE (Luke 24:12- Peter and other disciples were left wondering what happened after Jesus rose from the grave.

“…and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.” Luke 24:12

Two disciples on the road to were wondering. They were left wondering what happened as life drastically changed overnight. We can relate to this with the current pandemic. Jesus entered the conversation of the two disciples as he does our wondering and conversations today. Jesus asks them what they are speaking of: Their response was their hope for rescue.

20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Luke 24:20-21

They longed for the Messiah to conquer their outward world, when Jesus Christ first came to conquer their inward world. The Kingdom of God first comes inward and then works itself out to transform the world. Jesus response to them roots them in the facts referenced above in :3-5.

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Luke 24:27

TEMPORARY TOWARDS TRANSFORMATION (:25-26) We need the help of Jesus in our current circumstances, but we must set our sights on the horizon of ultimate transformation. Jesus does get involved in the stuff of everyday life.

2 Jesus influenced the ultimate of the temporary of this life, physical death. We see this with Lazarus in John 11:1-44. Jesus raises Lazurus from the dead, but this is only temporary as Lazurus will still die a physical death at some point. Jesus points to the ultimate and personifies resurrection with his statement about resurrection. Resurrection has become a person! " the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.

THINKING IT THROUGH Share the hope you have in Jesus with someone today/this week. Spend some time thanking God for new life in Christ.
