  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

  • A's News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star Outing by Trevor
A’s News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star outing by Trevor Cahill lifts Oakland A's By Joe Stiglich, Contra Costa Times A's starter Trevor Cahill said he's likely to spend his All-Star break logging beach time in his hometown of Oceanside, just outside of San Diego. As things are unfolding, Cahill's agenda could get redirected north to Anaheim. The All-Star Game is at Angel Stadium on July 13, and Cahill is making a bid to represent the A's. He's building a case that's hard to ignore. Cahill limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to two hits over 72/3 innings in a 5-0 victory Saturday night in front of 25,068 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. He struck out a career-high 10 and won his sixth straight decision, giving him the longest winning streak by an A's starting pitcher since Dan Haren won 10 straight from April 18-July 1, 2007. The A's are likely to get just one player named to the All-Star team, and closer Andrew Bailey and catcher Kurt Suzuki figure to get strong consideration, too. Typical of his personality, Cahill (7-2, 2.88 ERA), who less than two months ago was at Triple-A Sacramento, takes a low-key approach about even hearing his name in the discussion. "When I was in Sacramento, I never thought I'd be where I'm at now, or even in consideration," Cahill said. "So just being mentioned, it means a lot. We've got plenty of guys that are good enough to be named All-Stars." The A's were bound to grab attention on 1970s Turn Back The Clock Night, regardless of how they played.

The London School of Economics and Political Science Presidential Rhetoric Justifying Healthcare Reform: Continuity, Change & the Contested American Moral Order and Social Imaginary from Truman to Obama Noam Schimmel A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Media and Communications of the London School of Economics for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, September 2013 1 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it.) The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgment is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without my prior consent. I warrant that this authorization does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis is 98, 147 words. 2 Abstract The original contribution to knowledge of my thesis is a comparative historical analysis of the rhetoric used by four Democratic presidents to expand access to and affordability of healthcare. Specifically, the thesis situates Democratic presidential healthcare reform rhetoric in relation to opposing conservative Republican ideologies of limited government and prioritization of negative liberty and their increasing prominence in the post-Reagan era. It examines how the American moral order and social imaginary has evolved and how Democratic presidential healthcare reform rhetoric was both informed by and responded to it.

  • Comparative Perspectives on American Political Development
IN THIS ISSUE... Volume 19 Number 2 Spring/Summer 2009 Comparative Perspectives on American Political Development Richard Franklin Bensel Department of Government, Cornell University I write to you as the 19th president of the section, a section now mature enough to have spanned a generation. We, as the Jefferson Airplane once sang, “are no longer young.” But we are also not old. We are somewhere in between, neither idling at a crossroads nor hurtling down a freeway. The section has its share of challenges but seems to be in good shape. But this is not a “state of the section” essay. Instead, I write as one who, along with the rest of you, have watched Politics and History develop over the years. We have, as I will describe below, become a bit of a tribe but our tribalism has always been less developed than most of our peer sections. And this is all to the good. A tension lurks at the center of most In In this Issue academicIN life, a tension between the sociological imperative of a profession and the individualizing, creative spirit of scholarship. The sociological imperativeTHIS implacably demands that we belong to an identifiable intellectual community.
