What are the challenges Zara face to maintain it's growth? December 17, Notably, Zara has a unique approach to handle changing demand, which has allowed the company to become widely successful and a leading business organization in the fashion retail industry, in which many corporations struggle to deal with fast-changing environments, operations, and inventory costs. The arrival of new trends forces retailers to adapt their collections, causing what James calls the Forrester or bullwhip effect. Zara relies heavily on outsourced manufacturing, even though most operations and inventory decisions and strategies are still held, taken, and based out on their headquarters in . Every time an order is placed, all items are shipped to Spain for final design adjustments and inventory stocking. With the use of technology and collaboration with its store managers, the company can produce only what is currently trending, which results in a significant reduction of unsold items caused by the rapidly changing tastes of consumers in this fast-changing industry Berfield and Baigorri, Such a strategy allows Zara to maintain high standards of quality besides keeping inventory costs at low levels. According to Berfield and Baigorricentralization is a source of competitive advantage for Zara. Despite expanding into new markets, Zara still maintains all operations in their headquarters in Spain. For example, garments will have to be shipped to Spain for quality assessment before being shipped back to China to distribution stores, so Zara has to deal with an expensive endeavor across its supply chain. On the other hand, the company would significantly increase costs through decentralization, making it difficult to successfully implement the just in time inventory management principles Berfield and Baigorri, That all being said, one of the biggest challenges that Zara will most likely face is the increased costs in its distribution chain associated with widening operations outside Spain Berfield and Baigorri, The location of its facilities in China will have a significant impact on how quality will be assessed by the cube, and the subsequent shipping of goods to stores may require the distribution chain to be expanded. Other challenges are the increased costs for establishing new warehouses, acquisition of high-tech equipment, and labor costs for new facilities. It is worth to mention that cultural issues and language barriers may also be an issue since Zara relies on direct and continuous communication and collaboration with its store managers. Although Zara is a global corporation in the fashion retail industry, much of the business still revolves around Spain and Europe SCM Globe, Additionally, Zara could establish another Cube in China to address one of its most significant issues, which is the need to ship back and forth between Spain and China, taking advantage of the fact that expansion is an already budgeted strategy for the company. Because of that, the company will need to find alternatives to reduce its operational costs related to installing production facilities in China Gallaugher, In simpler terms, Zara could duplicate its Spanish Cube to other parts of the globe. An additional Cube in China would support customer demand and meet the unique needs not only of the Chinese but also the entire Asian market. Most importantly, the company should also invest in extra capacity to meet any sudden increases in The Man from Zara: The Story of the Genius Behind the Inditex Group during peak periods in Asia, which is a continent far more populous than the traditional markets the company has been serving thus far. What a great topic! What a disappointment. View 1 comment. Do not waste money, actually do not waste time on this semblance of a book. Unfortunately a total of 20 pages are relevant to the topic at hand - Zara, all the others are filled with praise for the owner, the company and the staff. If you hope to learn something about the business and how it was built, forget it. If you hope to learn something about the man who built the business better turn to Wikipedia, it will be as informative as this book. Aug 14, Tomasz rated it it was ok. Really strange book. Describing how great person Amancio is. Indeed he is, but reading about it all the time in every chapter is a little I gave one star for this book because I even decided not to read it until The Man from Zara: The Story of the Genius Behind the Inditex Group end. It was a torture for me. I began to read it fully motivated. Unfortunately, the book is a praise of Ortega which is not a negative thingbut I like to form my own opinion relying on facts. It's a one-position book, from one point of view. Would be better as an article of at least called "My thoughts on Zara". It is an interesting read but mostly focuses on the actual owner of owner- Ortega, which I am sure, is an amazing leader and person. I would like to see more about the actual company culture and business structure. View all 3 comments. Dec 06, Trung Nguyen Dang rated it it was amazing. It's another fantastic book about another fantastic business, Inditex and a superb operator, Amancio Ortega. I could not put down the book once The Man from Zara: The Story of the Genius Behind the Inditex Group started reading. The author is Covadonga O'Shea, editor-in-chief of Telva, one of the most important Spanish fashion magazines for women about fashion trends and lifestyle. So she knows fashion well, and thus, her views in the book are insightful. The book is not a biography. And it It's another fantastic book about another fantastic business, Inditex and a superb operator, Amancio Ortega. And it's very light on the details and history of Ortega. The man does not share much about history or childhood, or the early days of Inditex. The book is about the author's perspectives of Inditex and Ortega, based on interviews with Ortega, senior management, and other employees. The negative is that Ortega is painted as almost too perfect, or god-like. There is almost nothing negative about him. Even and Charlie Munger have some quirks. This is one of the most boring business books I've ever read in my life. Actually it's not a business book at all. Good topic, very beautifully published book itself: my copy of the book is decorated with handles, so it is styled like Zara's shopping bag. But what the content! I do not advise. Jul 06, Jordi Costa rated it really liked it. This is one of the few if not only first hand accounts of the life of Amancio Ortega, arguably the most successful businessman from Spain. As a very private person who has never really given any formal interview, these pages are invaluable to understand the person behind the company Inditex. To understand this company one needs to understand Amancio — as one close friend and associate says in the book. Inditex is a lot more unique than most people realize.
