  • Dark Times: Art and Artists of Vilnius in 1939–1941
326 Dark Times: Art and Artists of Vilnius in 1939–1941 Giedrė Jankevičiūtė Vilnius Academy of Arts Maironio St. 6, LT-01124 Vilnius e-mail: [email protected] The aim of this paper is to discuss and reconstruct in general fe- atures the reality of the Vilnius artistic community from late autumn 1939 to June 1941. This period of less than two years significantly changed the configuration of the artistic community of the city, the system of institutions shaping the art scene as well as the artistic goals. It also brought forth new names and inspired new images. These changes were above all determined by political circumstances: the war that broke out in Poland on 1 September 1939; the ceding of Vilnius and the Vilnius region to Lithuania; two Soviet occupations: in the autumn of 1939 and June 1940, and the subsequent Nazi occupation a year later. The influence of politics on the art scene and the life of artists has been explored in institutional and other aspects by both Lithuanian and Polish art historians, but the big picture is not yet complete, and the general narrative is still under construction. A further aim of this paper is to highlight some elements that have not received sufficient atten- tion in historiography and that are necessary for the reconstruction of the whole. Some facts of cooperation or its absence among artists of various ethnicities are presented, and the question is raised on the extent to which these different groups were affected by Sovietisation, and what impact this fragmentation had on the city’s art scene.

  • The University of Chicago Smuggler States: Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Contraband Trade Across the Soviet Frontier, 1919-1924
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO SMUGGLER STATES: POLAND, LATVIA, ESTONIA, AND CONTRABAND TRADE ACROSS THE SOVIET FRONTIER, 1919-1924 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE DIVISION OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY BY ANDREY ALEXANDER SHLYAKHTER CHICAGO, ILLINOIS DECEMBER 2020 Илюше Abstract Smuggler States: Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Contraband Trade Across the Soviet Frontier, 1919-1924 What happens to an imperial economy after empire? How do economics, security, power, and ideology interact at the new state frontiers? Does trade always break down ideological barriers? The eastern borders of Poland, Latvia, and Estonia comprised much of the interwar Soviet state’s western frontier – the focus of Moscow’s revolutionary aspirations and security concerns. These young nations paid for their independence with the loss of the Imperial Russian market. Łódź, the “Polish Manchester,” had fashioned its textiles for Russian and Ukrainian consumers; Riga had been the Empire’s busiest commercial port; Tallinn had been one of the busiest – and Russians drank nine-tenths of the potato vodka distilled on Estonian estates. Eager to reclaim their traditional market, but stymied by the Soviet state monopoly on foreign trade and impatient with the slow grind of trade talks, these countries’ businessmen turned to the porous Soviet frontier. The dissertation reveals how, despite considerable misgivings, their governments actively abetted this traffic. The Polish and Baltic struggles to balance the heady profits of the “border trade” against a host of security concerns shaped everyday lives and government decisions on both sides of the Soviet frontier.

  • Scholarship of Imagination Per Anders Rudling, the Rise and Fall of Belarusian Nationalism, 1906-1931 (Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2015)
Scholarship of Imagination Per Anders Rudling, The Rise and Fall of Belarusian Nationalism, 1906-1931 (Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2015). Aiming to introduce “Belarusian nationalism” (why not “White Ruthenian,” “Belorussian,” or “Byelorussian” is not explained)1 to Western scholarship, Per Anders Rudling has written two works under one cover. One is a true believer’s regurgitation of leftist theories of nationalism. The other is an awkward attempt to ram the modern historical experience of the people of Belarus into the ideological paradigm which guides him. The result is a mixed bag of misinterpreted historical gems and predictable post-modernist clichés. The greatest flaw is that the author does not sufficiently know the history of the lands and peoples of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where, in his view, Belarusian nationalism was “imagined.” Despite all this, the historian amazingly distills a sound conclusion, namely that modern ideologies imposed on the denizens of Belarus were calamitous for them. Since neither his theoretical baggage nor empirical evidence rendered themselves to this conclusion, we must assume that the scholar arrived at it largely intuitively. By his telling, the “invention of Belarus,” “its imagination,” took place “at the turn of the [20th] century” (p. 3). Although Rudling’s periodization spans from 1906 to 1931, he is mostly interested in the period of 1915-1926: “the efforts of nationalists on both sides of the border to root a national consciousness among the masses” (p. 17). The narrative part follows a chronological path. From 1918 or so, it alternates between geographical parts in the east and west.

  • The Life and Times of Józef Mackiewicz
www.strategyandfuture.org Now You know Country of Origin? ‘Eastern Europe’: the life and times of Józef Mackiewicz 08 / 2019 – Albert Świdziński Józef Mackiewicz is not a well-known figure amongst the Polish people. We don’t talk about his books or argue about his views; his works cannot be found in the tightly-controlled canon of set texts which every school student has to study; there is no talk of on-screen adaptations. Józef Mackiewicz in a military uniform, 1919. (photo: Mackiewicz family archive) This is a tragic circumstance, because Józef Mackiewicz can certainly be listed amongst the greatest Polish writers of the twentieth century, not only in literary terms but because of the intellectual heritage he left behind. Country of Origin? ‘Eastern Europe’: the life and times of Józef Mackiewicz Author: Albert Świdźiński – 08/2019 1 www.strategyandfuture.org Now You know The author of ‘Drogi donikąd’ (The Road to Nowhere) was born in St. Petersburg and grew up in Vilnius. It seems that the identity of the pre-WWII borderlands – a mosaic of nations, cultures and religions – defined Mackiewicz. A native of the Baltic-Black Sea Bridge, which connects Eurasia with the European peninsula, he described his country of origin as Eastern Europe. It’s often said that the works of Mackiewicz are for grown ups, which is to speak of an intellectual maturity – the ability to look critically at legends, commonplace (i.e. well-worn) and ‘sanctified’ characters, attitudes, thought patterns. This is precisely what Józef Mackiewicz did, drawing upon himself the hatred of the communists, and the antipathy of a large part of the post-war Émigré community.

SUMMARY. №5 (126). 2014 Issue 5 of 2014 is fully dedicated to various aspects of Belarusian history, and also contains a large collection of literary works. The issue opens with a text by a historian from Minsk Cimafiej Akudovič titled «A Jubilee With Eyes Shut: Arguments Over The 1863 Uprising». In this article some disputable questions are adressed concerning the 1863—1864 uprising on the territory of Belarus. The questions the author addresses were not seriously considered by the researchers last year, which was a jubilee year of the uprising. A historian Julij Karalioŭ in his article «On The Real Scale Of Stalinist Purges In Belarus», criticises the propensity of many Belarusian historians towards exagerating the numbers of Stalinist terror victims who suffered from purges in 1920—1950. He doesn't deny the atrocity of Stalinist totalitatian regime, but gives his own estimates of the number of victims. The issue features a first-time Belarusian translation of an article by a renowned Polish historian Henryk Łowmiański «Sviatopolk In Bierasce (Brest) In 1019» in which an important episode of internecine struggle among Russian lords after the death of Kiev king Vladimir the Great. A scholar from Kryčaŭ Siarhiej Astankovič in his article «Karal Barysovič A Nasha Niva Member From East Mahiliou Region» describes the biography and creative heritage of a little known Belarusian movement personality of early XX century. A student Palina Skurko in her article «The Image Of China And Chinese People In The Eyes Of Belarusians In 1920 — 1930-S» studied the formation of the image of China and its inhabitants among East and West Belarusias of the interbellum period via mass media and personal contacts.

Occasionally he stopped and looked through the window. The view of deathly still trees increased his sense of aimlessness and disintegration. He kept adding new figures to his picture, one after another. It took him two hours to cover a whole envelope with flowers and geometrical shapes; it takes me much 2 more time to reveal the state of his mind. The letter in the envelope was from his wife, Janina, who had been apart from him for the past ten months. She wrote to her husband about their little son, whom he had never seen. It had been three months since he had decided to flee Poland, his homeland, and he had lived incognito in Paris in fear of being kidnapped or even murdered. He had spent many sleepless nights since his decision to break with the Polish communist government. This act had changed everything in his life. Czeslaw Milosz was a Polish poet, writer, and translator, who was born in 1911. He survived WW II in Poland. In 1946, he became a diplomat representing the Polish communist government in Washington and New York.

He was in despair when he realized he had been cut off from his fellow Shadow scouts who were fighting in the capital, but felt somewhat relieved to have heard that Polish units were approaching of My Father from the east. Unfortunately, Andrzej did not find his father in the ranks of the Polish First Army, whose soldiers arrived in Otwock at that time. Cut off from his mother, left behind in war-torn Warsaw, he was taken in by the Polish soldiers. As “the son of the Re- giment,” he covered the whole combat trail up to Berlin with the 2nd Howitzer Artillery Brigade. He met his mother aga- in only after the end of the war.
