'SILVER SLASHING' NEAR LLANGOED AND

Gwen Richards writes that the 'Silver Slashers Ramblers' volunteers were working in late February on the footpath between Carwad and Cae Mawr. Cae Mawr is on Lon Cae Mawr, the lane from Sling to Llanfaes, Mud, glorious mud... (A Massey) and Carwad is nearer to Llanddona. With some members on holiday, not all were addressed, but those present managed to build and net a boardwalk over a muddy area, unblock the stream running alongside the path, replace and net a number of broken boardwalk treads and build a handrail and steps around a tree growing across the path. A member of the Highways Department also used a chainsaw to cut encroaching branches and to clear trees that had fallen across the path.

TREES AND STORM DORIS

The area took a battering around 23 February 2017, when Storm Doris crossed right over us. The Met Office reported that over the previous night and into the

Before…where’s that stile? morning Storm Doris underwent something called 'explosive cyclogenesis', labelling it a 'weather bomb'. Gwen said that they replaced two stiles, repaired two others, and cleared some brambles. This path links up with lanes and other paths to make circular walks, particularly from Llangoed, and Gwen added that they were pleased to meet a local walking group. The photographs before and after show the difference.

A gust of 94 mph was recorded at Capel Curig. More locally, there were numerous reports of trees down around Llangoed, and the Britannia Bridge was closed, creating bottle-neck queues as vehicles attempted to use the Telford bridge instead. A colleague reported taking 2 hours to drive what should normally have taken

MUSIC MUD AND GLORY

Music Mud and Glory is an evening of music, poetry, film and imagery.

It will take place at the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas, Beaumaris, on Saturday 18 November 2017 at 7.30pm.

Music Mud and Glory features world premières of two new works written by local composer Ellen Davies and Guto Puw of Bangor University, with the Bangor University Chamber choir, led by Guto Puw, the OM Wind Ensemble, led by Sioned Roberts, harpist Mared Emlyn, Susan Fogarty of the R S Thomas Literary Society and pupils from Ysgol Beaumaris and Ysgol Llangoed.

The works are dedicated to, and celebrating, the lives of men from Beaumaris and the surrounding district who died in the Great War.

Toads spend the winter underground. They use their back legs to 'knead' their bodies into the soil, submerging themselves completely when the days get shorter and night turn colder. Once the weather turns milder, and on dark moonless nights, they will emerge and start to walk to the pond in which they started off as tadpoles ready to breed themselves. Common toads are very particular about where they breed and often
