In a previous post, I addressed the issue of the struggles we face as nudists embracing a nudist lifestyle. As I was lying naked on my couch sipping some tea, I remembered how cool it was to stay in a nudist setting. You don’t have to struggle with the idea of somebody seeing you naked, and potentially judg- ing you wrongly. And one idea led to the other. If being naked is the most comfortable clothing option, being naked in a nudist setting brings another layer of comfort: the social one. Physically Comfortable Discovering a new world Physical comfort is generally why you come to nudism. Being naked is really, really comfortable. No wet and soggy swimsuit when you go swimming. No clothes between the air, the sun and your skin. No skin rash due to constant chaffing of fabric. Just pure freedom. Read more

The Rise And Fall Of A Nudist Colony That Scandalized L.A. Although it is only 40 or so miles from Los Angeles, it feels like an- other world — this is Trump country, biker bar country, general store coun- try. A couple of turns take you to the entrance of a dirt road, rutted and de- serted. An old, vandalized sign indicates that you are entering a place named Mystic Oaks. A short drive down the road, you hit what looks like the en- trance to an abandoned camp — chicken-wire gate, a wooden sign for Mystic Oaks, KEEP OUT and BEWARE OF DOG postings. Behind the gates, there is no one, just the remnants of wooden buildings and scurrying lizards. Despite its current foreboding feel, for more than 70 years this secluded camp was the refuge of pioneering nudists who danced, sunbathed and played naked in the dusty sun. During the interwar period of the last century, the idea of nudism as a against modern, urban life flourished in certain progressive circles. “Amid rapid urbanization and the rise of a consumer-oriented economy dominated by giant corporations and white-collar work,” Brian Hoffman writes in Naked: A Cultural History of American Nudism, “many intellectuals, physical-culture promoters and urban reformers thought that Americans’ increasing discon- nection with their natural environment threatened to weaken the nation.” Read more 2 The Labyrinth Of Social Nudity In

I have changed planes at Narita airport near Tokyo perhaps a dozen times, but somehow, never quite made it out of the airport to actually see Japan – until just a few months ago when I had an opportunity to attend a conference in Kobe. And alas, with that came an opportunity to visit one of the celebrat- ed hot spring public baths that I’ve heard so much about over the years. I really had no idea what to expect, except for vague recollections of pieces I’ve read over the years. Travel banter from a cocktail party some- place? Somehow, I remember somebody describing a dark hall with wooden planks, and old men groaning as they lowered themselves into the scalding water. Sounding quite a bit short of alluring, I went digging on the internet to see what this famously Japanese custom was about, and if it warranted an afternoon of exploration on a cold winter’s day. Trip Advisor led me to the Kobe suburb of Arima; something akin to an Austri- an ski village, but lined with high rise apartment and complexes, it seems that hot water flows out of the mountain here Read more

5 Pokin Around: Don't Call Them Nudist 'Colonies'; Maybe It's Time To Go On 'Nakation'?

First of all, I've been advised, don't call it a nudist "colony." "It's been considered impolite to refer to nudist clubs as 'colonies' for dec- ades." So says a tweet from someone with the handle Naturist Vintage. Honestly, I was not trying to be rude about being nude. Mary Jane Kolassa, a public relations consultant for the American Association for Nude Recreation, also responded to my Friday, March 12, Answer Man column. The word "colony," she says, is "so 20th century. Today they are nudist clubs, resorts and campgrounds. And a nudist is a Nakation." To bring me into the 21st century, Kolassa also attached a Read more

Calling Out Nudephobia

I can’t say that I have ever met anyone who openly hates naturists. At least, not the kind of hate homophobes might direct at gay people or transphobes at transgender people. Most of the discriminatory behavior I see from “nudephobes” or “gymnophobes” is expressed with smirks and chuckles, and sometimes sug- gestions that social nudists are “exhibitionists.” Occasionally, I see the word “perverts,” too. The definition of , a medical term for the fear of nudity, doesn’t say anything about discriminatory behavior — unlike the definitions for “homophobia” and “transphobia,” two conditions that too often involve bla- tant and subtle forms of discriminatory behavior. But all three terms do point to “abnormal and persistent fears.” It is well known in the LGBTQ community that those who discriminate most against them often have deep insecurities about their own sexuality and/or gender identity, and that they try to repress those feelings by lashing out at others — sometimes quiet violently. But gay and trans folks have civil rights that social nudists don’t have: the rights to be true to themselves in their daily lives — even if some employers, landlords, conservative wingnuts and others don’t respect those rights. In Canada, at least, the rights of LGBTQ people are Read more
