The Coaching Corps Game Changer Awards will feature top Bay Area professional athletes celebrating the profound influence of coaches on their lives and in the community. The presenters – prominent Bay Area athletes whose lives have been shaped by the mentorship and transformative influence of caring coaches and other important persons – include: • Stephen Curry , Golden State Warriors point guard, 2014-15 NBA Champion and reigning NBA MVP, honoring his college coach Bob McKillop , Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Davidson College; • Derek Carr , Oakland Raiders quarterback, honoring his brother David Carr , 12-year NFL veteran and former quarterback; • Hunter Pence , San Francisco Giants right fielder and 2012 & 2014 World Series Champion, honoring his lifelong baseball mentor and former minor league pitcher Chris Gay ; • Torrey Smith , San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and Super Bowl XLVII Champion, honoring his Stafford Senior High School coaches John and Roger Pierce ; and • Stephen Vogt , Oakland A’s catcher and 2015 MLB All-Star, honoring his father Randy Vogt , former Fresno State University pitcher. Stanford Women’s Basketball Coach Tara VanDerveer will be honored with the 2016 Coaching Corps Lifetime Achievement Award , which will be presented by former Stanford point guard and current University of San Francisco Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jennifer Azzi . For the pinnacle moment of the evening, the Coaching Corps Game Changer Awards will honor 23-year-old University of Central Florida graduate Kutar Iman Sield with the Volunteer Coach of the Year Award . Coach Kutar was selected for her exemplary work coaching an all-boys middle school basketball team. When told that she will be receiving this prestigious award, Coach Kutar said: “Playing sports at a young age taught me my work ethic and the importance of perseverance. Basketball gave me confidence. I’m so thankful to be able to pass that on.” Additionally, viewers will be treated to a special shootout competition among three San Jose Sharks: six-time NHL All-Star and Olympic Gold Medalist Joe Thornton , two-time NHL All-Star and Olympic Silver Medalist Joe Pavelski and 2012 NHL All-Star Logan Couture . The 2nd Annual Coaching Corps Game Changer Awards , a 90-minute program, is hosted by CSN Bay Area’s Dave Feldman (@FeldyCSN) and Ahmed Fareed (@AhmedFareedCSN), along with Ros Gold-Onwude (@Rosgo21). The awards ceremony will be taped on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. The Sharks' Center, An Unlikely Playoff Scoring Machine, Isn't a Particularly Good Skater By REED ALBERGOTTI The hockey headlines this time of year are supposed to be dominated by the sport's biggest names—blazing fast superstars like Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin, or somebody who has a nickname that includes the word "rocket." But the guy everyone is talking about during this NHL postseason is an obscure center who insists he's still learning how to skate. "In a flat-out race from one end of the ice to another, I'm not going to win too many of those," says Joe Pavelski, the center for the San Jose Sharks. As a skater, he says, "I'm not where I need to be yet." From seemingly nowhere, Mr. Pavelski has scored nine goals in just 11 playoff games, second only behind Michael Cammalleri of the Montreal Canadiens. Never mind that he has never scored more than 25 goals in an entire NHL season (his total in each of the past two years). Mr. Pavelski has helped his team reach the conference finals for only the second time in franchise history. Joe Pavelski looks on after the Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche last month in their first- round series. Even Mr. Pavelski's agent, Dan Plante, is shocked. "Everybody always said he wouldn't go anywhere because he can't skate," said Mr. Plante. "To me, it's just humorous." The EMMY® award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the twenty chapters awarding regional Emmy® statuettes. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries were aired during the 2013 calendar year. This year 659 English and 101 Spanish entries were received in 63 categories. English and Spanish language entries were judged and scored separately. A minimum of five peer judges from other NATAS chapters scored each entry on a scale from 1 to 10 on Content, Creativity and Execution. (Craft categories were judged on Creativity and Execution only). The total score is divided by the number of judges. The mean score is sorted from highest to lowest in each category. The Chapter Awards Committee looks at blind scores (not knowing the category) and decides on the cut off number for nominations and recipients. The results are tabulated by our accounting firm Spalding and Company. KNTV NBC Bay Area received the highest number of nominations with 40 followed by Comcast SportsNet with 28. KUVS Univision19 topped the Spanish contest with 30 nominations. In the individual nomination count all the leaders were from KNTV NBC Bay Area: Mark Villarrela with seven; Jeremy Carroll, Felipe Escamilla and Tony Kovaleski each had six.

    2018 ANNUAL REPORT Changing the Game to Change the Odds DEAR FRIEND, At Coaching Corps, we are helping afterschool programs change the game to change the odds. For kids growing up in neglected communities, those odds are hard to beat. With failing schools, unsafe streets, parents who often work two jobs just to keep up, and afterschool programs working hard to provide kids with a safe place to go during the afterschool hours, kids in these communities lack many of the opportunities other kids have to grow, learn, and thrive. We are working side by side with people and afterschool partners throughout the country who want to change the game for kids in low- income communities. In 2018 we trained almost 3,000 people to become sports coaches for nearly 30,000 kids and helped over 200 afterschool programs like YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Parks and Recreation sites, give more kids the well-known benefits of playing sports with a trained coach who believes in them and helps them believe in themselves. We hope their stories, captured here, will remind you of that special person in your life whose confidence in you, belief in you, and willingness to teach you important life lessons, literally shaped the direction of your future.
