Commander Franklin Buchanan served as the first Superintendent. His faculty consisted of four officers and three civilian professors. There were 50 students. Initially, the academic and professional instruction required five yearsthe first and last at Annapolis, with the intervening three at sea. In 1850, the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. The following year, the Academy adopted its current course of instruction which includes four consecutive years at Annapolis, with at-sea training provided during the summers. The Naval Academy moved to Newport, R.I., during the Civil War. In 1865, it was re-established at Annapolis under the leadership of Vice Admiral David Dixon Porter. She has been published multiple times, most notably in the online journal, “Congenital Cardiology Today”. Luis Miguel Parrado Miguel Parrado, a junior cadet from Sierra Company, is a Political Science major specializing in pre-law studies. He is the captain of the intercollegiate ethics bowl team, actively involved in the honors program, and currently holds the cadet rank of Regimental Operations NCO. He has received gold stars every semester attended at The Citadel, as well as President’s List. Miguel plans to attend law school upon graduation. Jennifer Burch Jennifer is a junior member of Victor Company from Myrtle Beach. She is a Criminal Justice major and a member of the Honors Program. Jennifer has received Gold Stars and Dean’s List for 5 semesters and is also a member of The Citadel Women’s Rifle Team, as well as head delegate for The Citadel’s Model Arab League team. She is currently an Army contract and hopes to pursue a career as a Military Intelligence Officer. Lauren Seedor Lauren is a graduate of Conestoga High School and is from Wayne, Pennsylvania. -

The Influence of Alfred Thayer Mahan Upon History Frank B. Cook Bi-County Collaborative Franklin, MA Seminar on Teaching American History: Year 3 Dr. Peter Gibbon September 27, 2012 Cook 2 As students of history we clearly understand how the outcome of the American Civil War resonated through succeeding generations of Americans, most notably in the civil rights struggle of the second half of the 20th Century. Now, as we near the midpoint of the sesquicentennial of that event, it is similarly interesting to note how an inconspicuous United States naval captain, who played a relatively obscure role in that conflict, had a profound impact not only on America’s later rise to world power, but also on political and military leaders of other nations. Indeed it can be argued that his influence continues to be exerted even today. The naval officer in question is Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914) who, in 1890, published the results of his extensive study of history, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783. Mahan’s scholarly effort, in preparation for a teaching assignment at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, lead him to prepare an unprecedented account of “the effect of sea power upon the course of history and the prosperity of nations” (Mahan, v-vi). His research revealed a correlation between a nation’s naval policy and their success, or ultimate failure, as a nation. Mahan clearly linked the importance of sea power and command of the seas to the commercial and military success of a nation. His primary example was Britain, a nation which understood these principles long before Mahan canonized them, who became the major maritime power for several centuries. -

Its beginnings reach back into A the 19th century with the works of James Fenimore Cooper, and it was given a tremendous boost by the writings of Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan at the turn of the century. Since then interest in naval history has spread, especially since World War II, until today more scholars than ever before are engaged in active research. Naval history, however, was slow to develop as an academic field. The hallowed tradition of the late 19th century and early 20th century was that naval history should be written by officers, ex-officers, or civilians closely connected with the service. This type of naval literature, although a pioneering effort, left much to be desired. The glamour of naval operations, the heroics of battle, and the thrill of escapes at sea enthralled a generation of readers. The public's image of the United States Navy was molded in large part by writers whose personal tastes dictated the choice of events around which they wove their stories. Mercifully, during the 1920's, authors of American naval history ceased to consider their field as merely a branch of literature and at- tempted to write "scientific history." Naval officers and a handful of academicians trained in the scientific method sought to make generaliza- tions.
