What an extraordinary year this has been for us all, due to the unprecedented challenges of the public health crisis.

Since mid-March, Search and Care has had to repurpose our team and reimagine our agency services and supports to effectively serve not only existing clients, but many new ones throughout the Greater New York City area. We invite you to read more about this on the inside back cover.

Thanks to your support, even in these uncertain times, we were able to provide comfort, reassurance and compassionate care to a record number of frail, homebound and isolated older neighbors. Our agency services remains fee-free, and after nearly 50 years and 20,000+ clients served, vulnerable older people can rest assured Search and Care will continue to be there for them, now as ever.

Reimagining Care and Repurposing Team For Older Adults During a Public Health Crisis Search and Care clients often describe our home visits as a highlight of their week. But when the public health crisis necessitated sheltering in place (essential for older adults), it became apparent our agency had to quickly reimagine our care, and repurpose our team. Almost overnight, Search and Care transitioned to primarily telephonic and online services and supports to safeguard our clients’ ability to still age independently in their cherished homes and familiar communities. Initial Outreach: In our first weeks operating remotely, our Social Workers and Care Managers sought to assess safety and security, urgent needs and challenges, and the impact of the pandemic on our clients’ medical and mental health status. NEW “Emergency Grocery, Sanitary, Pet Upkeep": With support from New York Community Trust, Robin Hood Foundation, and others, Search and Care continues to offer free emergency shopping. Four team members established a network of reliable suppliers and already 500 financially and physically compromised older adults have benefited—receiving food supplies (fresh produce, meats, fish, dairy, canned goods), household staples, nutritional supplements, sanitizers, disinfectants, pet food and upkeep items, and more. Upgraded Groups: Enrichment and therapeutic groups are in full swing. Daily telephonic and virtual groups include Medical Rap, Tea and Creativity, Newsroom, Self-Advocacy, Computer Games, Technology Tutorials, Meditation Mondays, Music & Melody, VocalEase, Saturday Pet Pro Workshops, Amigos Virtuales, and more. Our goal is to offer support and camaraderie, while reducing isolation and loneliness. NEW Mental Health Service: “Talkin’ it Out” provide clients access to our bilingual Social Workers. 30-45 minute chats offer clients our undivided attention, normalize concerns, instill confidence, build strength and resiliency, and offer resources and referrals. Continued Financial Supports: Acting as our clients’ representative payee, we oversee clients’ finances, take in their Social Security and pensions, pay their bills, and home-deliver weekly cash to avoid exploitation and scams. All this, while practicing proper safety and social distancing protocols. Enhanced Technology Tutelage: “Silver Circles” enables clients to use technology to communicate with family, friends, physicians and others via email, FaceTime, Zoom, and social media. No tablet—no problem! We offer a free tablet lending library (with data plans) for our more financially constrained clients. A new “Kindling Communities” initiative makes it easier to enjoy our virtual groups, curl up with a book or compete in a Wordscapes tournament. Telephonic Check-in and Monitoring: Targeting lapsed clients and community referrals (faith, civic, healthcare, housing), we provide ongoing reassurance, support and a voice that says “I care.” Client Impact Coordinator: Our MPA with 30 years of experience asking and listening to client feedback via telephonic interviews, focus groups, and a new Client Advisory Committee – is helping improve our evaluation and effectiveness.
