Nicaragua: Cichliden uit de krater Ciclidos de lagunas cratéricas Jaime D. Villa, Ph.D.

Escribo esta reseña no porque este DVD acaba de salir (salió en 2005), sino porque es prác- ticamente desconocido en Nicaragua, y vale la pena verlo. Aunque el título es un poco restrictivo, la filmación no se reduce a lagunas cratéricas de nuestro país, sino más amplia, incluyendo un riachuelo en Ometepe, pesca con red en el Lago de Managua, etc.

Macho de Ometepe Hace muchos, muchos años, cuando mi interés aun no incluía los peces, un amigo de mi fa- milia me introdujo al buceo con "aqualung" en la laguna de Xiloá. Después de solo unos minutos bajo el agua, quede maravillado del espectáculo... los peces, especialmente mojarras (Cichlidae) o guabinas (Gobiidae), se movían naturalmente, sin temor al bípe- do de aletas plásticas que los observaba. Peces más pequeños, como pepescas (Poeciliidae) y sardinas (Atherinidae) eran más rápidos y nerviosos. La vegetación subacuática se mecía lenta- mente y daba refugio a peces diminutos que se mecían al uní- sono. Un espectáculo surrealista que me impresionó a esa edad. Entre más profundo bajaba, más grandes eran las mojarras y más escasa la luz. Desafortunadamente la idea que me dieron era usar el arpón que me prestaron, y logre arponear un par de peces grandes antes de que la conciencia comenzara a criticar- me. En aquel tiempo (al principio de los años 60) este tipo de buceo era prácticamente desconocido; los peces no eran para observar, y la pesca era con caña, red, o (peor) dinamita. Es muy satisfactorio ver que las cosas han cambiado y hasta hay un club y escuela de buceo ("Dive Nicaragua") con técnicas mucho más modernas que las que use en aquellos tiempos. Afortunadamente ahora hay una alternativa: observar este mundo sin mojarse, viendo una filmación en nuestro local criollo.

En 1982, después de cinco años de retrasos debido a nuestros compañeros sandinistas, apa- reció mi libro "Peces Nicaraguenses de Agua Dulce" (Villa, 1982), un esfuerzo bastante primitivo pero que desafortunadamente no ha sido superado. Sin embargo gracias a esta y a otras publicaciones, como los trabajos de Thorson que culminaron en su trabajo monumental, "Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes" (Thorson, 1976) después de un simposio internacional en Costa Rica, varios acuaristas extranjeros, especialmente europeos, han descubierto las maravillas ictiológi- cas que ofrece Centroamérica, especialmente Nicaragua y Costa Rica. Desde entonces han prolifera-

Aunque son muy pocos los investigadores estrictamente científicos en este cam- po, la proliferación de acuaristas y el uso de la Internet ha contribuido enormemente al conocimien- to de nuestra ictiofauna. Uno de los contribuyentes más destacados es Willem Heijns, residente de Stiphout, Países Bajos (the Netherlands), quien comenzó a visitar México y varios países centroamericanos colectan- do, observando y filmando peces, especialmente ciclidos, desde hace 15 años. Uno de sus países favoritos es Nicaragua, debido en gran parte a la diversidad de especies y la accesibilidad de lugares 62

Ha publicado una buena cantidad de artículos, muchos de ellos relacionados con Nicaragua o especies nicaragüenses (ver bibliografía). Desafortunadamente muchos de ellos están escritos en idioma que poco conocemos.

La obra que aquí reseño es un video de unos 50 minutos, Nicaragua: Cichliden uit de krater (Ci- clidos de lagunas cratericas), con fotos de Ad Konings (Heijns, 2005a), narrado en inglés, y con música de fondo agradable y variada. El video abre con dos mapas de Nicaragua seguidos por varios peces en su ambiente natural y por imágenes de la costa de las Isletas de Granada y la Isla Ometepe. En Ometepe nos lleva a un riachuelo de aguas rápidas, el río Buen Suceso, de menos de 2 kilómetros. Las aguas no son muy turbias y podemos ver a 3 especies de ciclidos bajo el agua, algunos con su diminuta pero abundante progenie: Astatheros longimanus, Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus y Tomocichla tuba, siendo esta última especie inesperada en esta localidad aunque ya había sido encontrada en Nicaragua por Villa (1984). Luego vemos una canoa primitiva pero motorizada que lleva a una pesca con red en los már- genes del Lago de Managua, donde encuentran varios ciclidos como Amphilopus citrinellus y A. labiatus. De aquí pasamos a la laguna cratérica más grande de Nicaragua, la Laguna de Apoyo. Bajo el agua vemos a las guabinas (Gobiomorus dormitor), guapotes barcinos (Parachromis managuensis) y un cicli- do único de Apoyo descubierto hace relativamente poco, A. zaliosus. Es una especie de aguas abier- tas, y lo podemos ver en grandes grupos, cazando sardinas (Melaniris), conducta no observada hasta entonces. También vemos a otras dos especies de nombre inconcluso, que el autor denomina Amphi- lophus “squid” y A. “chancho”, probablemente relacionadas con A. citrinellus. Estas especies fueron posteriormente descritas como Amphilophus astorquii y A. chancho por Stauffer et al. (2008).

Figura 5. Amphilopus longimanus. muy filosas y peligrosas al buceador, de una erupción reciente del volcán. Aquí se nota que la laguna sirve en parte como basurero del cercano pueblo Masaya, y se nota el agua verdosa, turbia y los fondos con cantidades de botellas, bolsas de plástico y muchas otras suciedades. A pesar de eso los peces son abundantes, especialmente los pequeños C. nigrofasciatus. También vemos varios A. citrinellus cuidando su progenie.

De aquí pasamos a la Península Chiltepe, donde está la Laguna Xiloá, con fondos arenosos y paredes rocosas casi verticales. Aquí vemos a una gran cantidad de guapotes barcinos jóvenes (Para- chromis managuensis) así como guapotes laguneros (P. dovii), una mojarra que Heijns denomina Amphi- lophus “fatlips” (probablemente relacionada a A. labiatus) y Astatheros rostratus. Se ven muchos Archo- centrus centrarchus escondiéndose entre las algas, algunos con sus colores reproductivos. En los fondos arenosos vemos varios Hypsophrys nicaraguensis con sus nidos en la arena hechos por las hembras y cuidados por ambos sexos. También vemos a varias mojarras mal llamadas picaculo, Neetroplus nematopus, comunes entre las algas pero más frecuentes en las laderas rocosas. Hay tres variedades de mojarras relacionadas con A. citrinellus que difieren en color (que va desde amarillo pálido y casi blanco

Recientemente se han propuesto tres nombres para ellas, A. amarillo, A. saggitae y A. xiloaensis. Otro aspecto conocido es que en algunas partes del fondo se ven regiones burbujeantes de

Figura 7. Amphilophus xiloensis. gas cálido y hasta caliente, probablemente debido a actividad volcánica subyacente. Sin embargo las burbujas no parecen afectar a los peces. El segmento correspondiente a Xiloá es el más extenso del video y entra en relaciones in- teresantes entre N. nematopus, H. nicaraguensis, y el guapote más grande del país, P. dovii, que con fre- cuencia se alimenta de pequeños N. nematopus. Otro depredador grande es la guabina (Gobiomorus dormitor).

Aunque la calidad no es altamente profesional es sin embargo muy buena, la música es agradable y adecuada a los seg- mentos. Vale la pena verlo, especialmente para los acuaristas, interesados es peces locales, y aficio- nados al buceo. Yo lo recomiendo sin duda alguna.

El Dr. Jaime Villa dice que habló con varios editores y amigos que le dicen que la idea de poner videos en la revista es inusitada, revolucionaria y hasta genial. Ninguno de ellos sabe de revista alguna que los ofrezca, ni en Europa. Por esto me parece buena idea destacar, en el editorial, que la inclusión de videos en RTN pone a la revista a la vanguardia, que es la primera vez que se hace. Sería bueno destacarlo para que los lectores la aprecien más. Woody, Carbone, Smith, Danko, DeWerth EXCHANGE Article “Shell Dweller Sampler” By Jerry Riegel First published in Fincinnati, the official newsletter of the Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society www.aquarticles.com ! ! ! My!interest!in!shell!dwellers!started!when!I!began!exploring!the!smaller!species!of!the! Lamprologus!genus.!These!fish!initially!caught!my!fancy!because!of!the!limited!amount!of!tank! space!that!I!have.!I!started!out!keeping!Lamprologus!like!L.!leleupi,!L.!cygnus,!and!L.!brichardi.! These!are!roughly!three!to!four!inch!fish!and!are!quite!adaptable!in!medium!sized!community! setups!(55!gallon!tanks).!They!will!even!spawn!and!defend!a!territory!in!a!community!situation,! although!having!two!fish!reserve!40!percent!of!a!55!gallon!aquarium!may!not!be!your!idea!of!a! proper!use!of!tank!space.!It!was!not!mine.!And!therefore,!my!pairs!usually!ended!up!in!10!or!20! gallon!aquariums.! ! As!I!explored!the!genus!Lamprologus,!I!found!information!on!the!various!shell!dwellers.!These! really!interested!me.!I!liked!their!size!and!was!fascinated!by!the!shell!dwelling.!All!the!other!fish! seemed!to!like!rocks.!These!were!different.!However,!they!were!not!as!available!to!me!as!the! other!Lamprologus!species.!So!I!started!with!the!likes!of!L.!leleupi!etc.!But!the!search!was!on.! ! ! At!the!American!Cichlid!Association!(ACA)!convention!in!Louisville,!Kentucky!I!found!Lamprologus! ocellatus!"Gold".!They!were!small!but!I!got!the!guy's!last!seven!fish.!That!was!the!start!of!my!shell! dweller!experience!which!continues!today.!They!are!interesting!fish,!can!be!kept!in!a!ten!gallon! aquarium,!and,!last!but!not!least,!they!are!Cichlids!(I!am!a!self!professed!Cichlidphile).!What!more! could!you!want?! ! The!fish!documented!here!are!all!from!Lake!Tanganyika.!They!are!also!all!from!the!genus! Lamprologus.!Neothauma!tanganyicense!snail!shells!are!their!houses!when!they!are!in!Lake! Tanganyika,!but!really!any!shell!will!suffice.!On!vacation,!at!the!beach,!I!am!constantly!on!the! lookout!for!shells.!I!usually!find!a!few!and!buy!a!few.!New!shells!are!always!needed.!I!like!to!give! the!fish!a!choice!of!shells!and!let!them!pick!their!favorite.!I!will!usually!put!half!a!dozen!shells!in!a! tank!with!a!pair.! ! The!male!is!usually!the!larger!fish!between!himself!and!the!female.!Adults!generally!range!in!size! from!one!to!two!inches!in!length.!The!eggs!are!laid!and!fertilized!in!the!shell.!Their!fry!are!quite! small!but!will!readily!accept!newly!hatched!baby!brine!shrimp.! ! These!fish!are!somewhat!aggressive!(after!all,!they!are!Cichlids),!but!they!are!small!fish!and!the! area!which!they!stake!out!is!also!rather!small.!This!diminishes!the!aggression!to!the!point!where! it!is!easily!managed.!However,!it!is!not!unusual!for!one!of!my!L.!ocellatus!to!nip!my!arm!when!I! have!it!in!the!aquarium!near!its!shell.!It!doesn't!hurt,!but!rather!surprises!you.!They!are!small,!but! they!are!still!Cichlids.!In!general,!a!breeding!pair!can!be!housed!in!a!ten!gallon!aquarium.!As!with! all!fish,!some!individuals!are!more!aggressive!than!others.!I!have!had!males!harass!female!and! vice!versa.!It!depends!on!the!individual!fish.! ! ! ! Below!is!a!list!of!shell!dwellers!to!which!I!have!been!exposed!and!a!brief!note!on!each!one.! ! Lamprologus!ocellatus!! I!have!kept!a!"Gold"!variety!of!these!fish!since!1992.!I!bought!seven!fry!at!the!ACA!Convention!at!Louisville!as! mentioned!above.!I!kept!them!in!a!twenty!gallon!aquarium!with!some!other!Cichlids!until!one!day!I!noticed! that!one!fish!was!keeping!really!close!tabs!on!a!particular!shell.!I!hoped!for!the!best!and!moved!this!fish! (smaller!and!therefore!the!female)!and!a!closeVby!male!to!a!ten!gallon!tank.!I!was!rewarded!with!fry!in!a! couple!of!days.!This!female!and!various!males!produced!fry!for!about!three!years.!Recently,!she!passed!away! and!I!now!have!several!other!pairs!that!I!am!hoping!will!duplicate!her!successes.! ! I!have!only!kept!these!fish!for!about!a!year.!They!are!quite!handsome!fish!and!seem!to!adapt!well.!Mine!are! quite!prolific,!causing!me!to!thin!out!the!tank!every!several!months.!I!am!keeping!them!as!a!colony!and!they! seem!to!do!quite!well!in!that!context.!I!started!out!with!probably!two!pairs!and!about!seven!shells.!Now!I! have!seven!pairs!and!seven!shells.!At!the!first!sign!of!potential!trouble!they!head!straight!into!their!shells!and! are!quite!difficult!to!extract.!This!is!probably!the!reason!that!you!see!them!at!auctions!in!the!plastic!bag!with! the!shell.! ! Lamprologus!brevis!! I!bought!a!pair!of!"Sunspot"!brevis!a!couple!years!ago.!Unfortunately,!they!died!on!the!trip!home.!Recently,!I! purchased!six!"Kigoma!Bay"!brevis!and!they!are!all!safe!and!sound!in!a!ten!gallon!tank!in!my!fish!room.!These! are!quite!attractive!fish.!I!have!high!hopes!for!these!fish!and!feel!really!fortunate!to!get!these!guys.! ! Lamprologus!caudopunctatus! These!are!not!technically!shell!dwellers,!but!they!are!small!and!will!use!a!shell!to!spawn!(I!have!also!had!them! spawn!in!caves).!I!have!had!the!"Red!Dorsal"!variety!of!these!fish!for!quite!a!long!time!and!they!are!one!of!my! favorites.!They!are!good!looking!fish!with!a!bright!blue!eye!and!a!orange!fluorescent!dorsal!fin.!The!body!is! light!colored!with!a!blue!sheen.!They!will!spawn!in!a!community!setting!and!kept!fry!out!of!harms!way.!I!once! had!a!pair!defend!and!keep!fry!for!four!weeks!in!a!55!gallon!tank!full!of!other!fish.! ! Lamprologus!meeli!! I!kept!these!fish!for!about!a!year.!I!started!with!six!and!after!a!death!and!a!couple!of!jumpers!I!was!down!to! three.!I!did!not!gather!much!information!on!these!guys,!as!they!never!spawned!for!me.!I!think!I!ended!up! with!all!males.!They!did,!however,!seem!to!be!on!the!larger!side!of!average!for!shell!dwellers.! ! Lamprologus!kungweensis!! I!just!bought!some!of!these!at!the!1996!Spring!Auction.!They!are!really!nice!looking!fish.!They!have!basically!a! silver!body!with!black!bands!or!spots.!The!sides!of!their!bodies!are!sprinkled!with!many!fluorescent!blue! spots!and!they!have!a!small!gold!cap!above!each!eye.!The!unpaired!fins!are!edged!in!black.!I!started!them!out! in!a!ten!gallon!by!themselves,!but!they!are!now!in!a!75!with!a!host!of!other!Africans.!The!bigger!tank!has! certainly!helped!them!color!up!and!become!more!outgoing.! !
