They are of a sandy consistency and are largely comprised of insect remains, whereas rodent droppings generally contain a wider array of food sources. -

CHAPTER THREE BANDICOTA INDICA, THE BANDICOOT RAT 3.1 The Living Animal 3.1.1 Zoology Rats and mice (family Muridae) are the most common and well-known rodents, not only of the fi elds, cultivated areas, gardens, and storage places but especially so of the houses. Though there are many genera and species, their general appearance is pretty the same. Rats are on average twice as large as mice (see Chapter 31). The bandicoot is the largest rat on the Indian subcontinent, with a body and head length of 30–40 cm and an equally long tail; this is twice as large as the black rat or common house rat (see section 3.1.2 below). This large size immediately distinguishes the bandicoot from other rats. Bandicoots have a robust form, a rounded head, large rounded or oval ears, and a short, broad muzzle. Their long and naked scaly tail is typical of practically all rats and mice. Bandicoots erect their piles of long hairs and grunt when excited. Bandicoots are found practically on the whole of the subcontinent from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin, including Sri Lanka, but they are not found in the deserts and the semi-arid zones of north-west India. Here, they are replaced by a related species, the short-tailed bandicoot (see section 3.1.2 below). The bandicoot is essentially parasitic on man, living in or about human dwellings. They cause a lot of damage to grounds and fl oorings because of their burrowing habits; they also dig tunnels through bricks and masonry. -

It was described as a separate species based on three specimen trapped in 1986. From that time no other Sicista was found in Armenia. In 2015 we surveyed Central and Northern Armenia and established that probably population from the type locality is lost. But we found another population on Sevan Pass. Due to our observations the species meets Critically Endangered B2a+bIV category of the IUCN Red List. Key words: Sicista, Caucasus, Armenia, subalpine meadows, extinction, Critically Endangered. Introduction Armenian birch mouse, Sicista armenica Sokolov and Baskevich, 1988, is one of the sibling species in the S. caucasica group, which are S. caucasica s. str., S. kluchorica, S. kazbegica and S. armenica. Should FWS find this petition warrants further consideration (e.g. a positive 90-day finding), we are submitting this petition to ensure that the agency simultaneously considers listing the Preble’s as a distinct population segment of the meadow jumping mouse. -

brown rat Rattus norvegicus Kingdom: Animalia Division/Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Rodentia Family: Muridae ILLINOIS STATUS common, nonnative FEATURES The brown rat is large (head-body length seven to 10 inches, tail length five to eight inches) for a rat. It has a salt-and-pepper look with brown, black and gold hairs. There are darker hairs down the middle of the back. The belly fur is gray- or cream-colored. The feet have white fur. The ringed, scaly, one-colored tail is nearly hairless. BEHAVIORS The brown rat may be found statewide in Illinois. It lives in buildings, barns, houses, dumps and other areas associated with humans. This rodent will eat almost anything. It does eat food intended for human use and can contaminate food supplies. It is usually associated with poor sanitary conditions and livestock areas. This rat will carry food to its nest instead of eating it where the food is found. The brown rat is known to spread diseases. This nocturnal mammal is a good climber. It produces some sounds. Mating may occur at any time throughout the year. The average litter size is seven. Young are born helpless but develop rapidly. They are able to live on their own in about one month. Females begin reproducing at the age of about three months. If conditions are favorable, a female may reproduce once per month. The average life span of the brown rat is about one and one-half years. This species was introduced to the United States from Europe by humans. Frey) Prepared by the Listing Review Team U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Albuquerque, New Mexico May 27, 2014 New Mexico Meadow Jumping Mouse SSA May 27, 2014 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This species status assessment reports the results of the comprehensive status review for the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius luteus) (jumping mouse) and provides a thorough account of the species’ overall viability and, conversely, extinction risk. The jumping mouse is a small mammal whose historical distribution likely included riparian areas and wetlands along streams in the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains from southern Colorado to central New Mexico, including the Jemez and Sacramento Mountains and the Rio Grande Valley from Española to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, and into parts of the White Mountains in eastern Arizona. In conducting our status assessment we first considered what the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse needs to ensure viability. We generally define viability as the ability of the species to persist over the long-term and, conversely, to avoid extinction. We next evaluated whether the identified needs of the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse are currently available and the repercussions to the subspecies when provision of those needs are missing or diminished. We then consider the factors that are causing the species to lack what it needs, including historical, current, and future factors. Finally, considering the information reviewed, we evaluate the current status and future viability of the species in terms of resiliency, redundancy, and representation. -

In New England, they include mice, voles, bog lemmings, flying squir- Srels, chipmunks, moles and shrews. Researchers study small mammals because they are common, widespread, diverse, easily handled and reproduce often. My father, Dana Snyder, was one of those researchers. In the 1960s, when I was just four years old, he began a long-term study of the ecology of the eastern chipmunk in the Green Mountains of southern Vermont. Our summer camping trips to his study site infused me with a fondness for small mammals, especially chipmunks. Chipmunks are one of those small mammals that both entertain and annoy. Colorful in their brown and white stripes, they are lively and active during the day. When star- tled, they emit a high-pitched “chip” before darting off to a hideout; their low chuck, chuck, chuck is a common summer sound in our woods. They can stuff huge numbers of seeds into their cheek pouches. Despite their prevalence, chipmunks live solitary lives and are highly territorial. In winter, they take a long nap, waking occasionally to eat stored seeds or emerge above ground on a warm winter day. When I was in elementary school, my dad brought home an orphaned flying squirrel. We were enthralled with its large, dark eyes and soft fur. It would curl up in my shirt pocket, and I took it to school for show-and-tell.
