A COMMENTARY ON JEROME’S CONTRA VIGILANTIUM BY AMY HYE OH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Classical Philology with a concentration in Medieval Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Danuta Shanzer Professor Ralph Mathisen Professor Jon Solomon Professor Stephan Heilan, University of Osnabrück ABSTRACT Innkeepers inspired this dissertation. After working on ‘innkeepers’ as a topic for a research seminar paper, I soon discovered that the term caupo counted as an insult according to several church fathers, including Jerome. In the Contra Vigilantium, Jerome mocked his enemy, Vigilantius, by calling him a caupo who mixed water with wine; I wondered whether the title was true and the insult was deserved. What remained was to figure out who this man was and why he mattered. The dissertation is comprised of four parts: introductory chapters, a text with an en face translation, a philological/historical commentary, and appendices. The first chapter introduces Vigilantius, discusses why a commentary of the Contra Vigilantium is needed, and provides a biography, supported by literary and historical evidence in response to the bolder and more fanciful account of W.S. Gilly.1 The second chapter treats Vigilantius as an exegete. From a sample of his exegesis preserved in Jerome’s Ep. 61, I determine that Jerome dismissed Vigilantius’ exegesis because he wanted to protect his own orthodoxy. The third chapter situates Vigilantius in the debate on relic worship. His position is valuable because he opposed most of his contemporaries, decrying relics instead of supporting their translation and veneration. -

The Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom An English translation from the Greek, with commentary, of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom The annotations in this edition are extracted from two books by Fr. Alexander Schmemann, of blessed memory: 1) The Eucharist published in 1987, and, 2) For The Life of The World, 1963, 1973, both published by Saint Vladimir’s Seminary Press. Fr. Schmemann died in 1983 at the age of 62 having been Dean of St. Vladimir’s Seminary for the 20 years previously. Any illumination for the reader of the meaning of the Liturgy is directly from Fr. Schmemann’s work; any errors are directly the fault of the extractor. In this edition the quiet prayers of the priest are indicated by being in blue italics, Scripture references are in red, the Liturgical text is in blue, and the commentary is in black. (Traditionally, the service of Orthros is celebrated right before each Liturgy. The traditional end of the Orthros is the Great Doxology. In our church, the end of the Orthros is separated from the Great Doxology by the Studies in the Faith and the Memorials. Thus, it appears that the Great Doxology is the start of The Eucharist, but that is not the case. [ed.]) The Liturgy of the Eucharist is best understood as a journey or procession. It is a journey of the Church into the dimension of the kingdom, the manner of our entrance into the risen life of Christ. It is not an escape from the world, but rather an arrival at a vantage point from which we can see more deeply into the reality of the world. -

Западноевропейское средневековое искусство 317 УДК: 745.03, 745.55, 745.521 ББК: 85.12 А43 DOI:10.18688/aa166-4-32 Silvia Leggio Relics in Cortona between Byzantium and Italy: The Case of the Church of St. Francis In the year 1245, a few months before Pope Innocent IV (1243–1254) declared Frederick II deposed, a Franciscan friar received from the city municipality of Cortona a plot of land in an area known as Balneum Reginae [16, pp. 135–136]; there he started the construction of an intramural church dedicated to Saint Francis1, which nowadays houses a small but important collection of relics. Besides the fragment of the True Cross, preserved in the renowned Byzan- tine reliquary (Ill. 95), the other three relics related to the memory of Saint Francis belong to this sacred treasury: the cassock (Ill. 96) and evangeliary (Ill. 97) used by the Saint of Assisi, and his mortuary pillow (Ill. 98). According to the tradition, they arrived in Cortona thanks to the effort of one of the most controversial historic figures in the early years of Franciscanism, Friar Elias (ca. 1180–1253) (Fig. 1), the founder of the church of Cortona itself, disciple and companion of Saint Francis, Minister General of the Franciscan Order between 1232 and 1239, and Frederick II’s friend and supporter2. Some internal conflicts in the Order and his closeness to the Emperor led to his excommunication declared in 1240 by the Pope. After that Elias definitively switched to the side of the “enemy of the Church”, becoming one of his most trusted confidant. -

The Place and Function of Imperial Regalia* Akira Akiyama Even though the studies of Christian and Buddhist art have long had respec- tive traditions, only rarely are their research results compared. This essay at- tempts to take up a comparative religious art historical investigation.1 There is no guarantee that such a comparison will bring about remarkable results; however, through the process of comparing it is possible, by juxtaposing differ- ent perspectives on similar kinds of objects, at least to gain some stimuli, ideas, and expertise vis-à-vis the fields of both Western and Japanese or East Asian art historical research. We thus explore here the regalia of the Holy Roman Empire, Reichskleinodien or Reichsinsignien, and the imperial regalia of Japan, Sanshu-no-Jingi (Three divine objects). Regalia are some of the most popular objects in many cultures, and are often newly made at the coronation of a sovereign. In this respect the imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire and of Japan make interesting exceptions, because in both cases they have a long tradition and history. By comparing the dynamics of portable sacred objects— their translation into different local contexts—we discover that regalia func- tion as both relics and icons to differing degrees in various situations. Further still, the ambiguity of place in the series of moves, compounded by issues of visibility, complicates the function of sacred imagery. While relics are prin- cipally not duplicable, but dividable, icons are not dividable, but duplicable. Japanese imperial regalia, in contrast to those of the Holy Roman Empire, have not only a relic-like character, but also an icon-like character. -

The Supernatural…A Force to Reckon With Comment [JWG1]: I like the title The combination of Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People (EH) and Geoffrey of Comment [JWG2]: In Chicago citation style, book titles are italicized Monmouth’s The History of the King of Britain (HRB) offer some unique insight into the lives of the British. The concept of faith was very prevalent in Britain during Bede and Geoffrey’s time period. One could even go so far as to say that it was the main form of community that everybody shared. Even Comment [JWG3]: This is unnecessary hedging…be more direct. You are saying this, so be up front about it though the two texts display different narratives of English history, one clear similarity between the texts is the significant impact the supernatural had on developing a common bond of faith in the public. Comment [JWG4]: This is a good, clear thesis. The introductory paragraph itself needs a bit more though…you need to introduce your actors better, and be a bit more HRB differs immensely from Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English people. Although Bede precise in setting the stage for your reader. What time period are we working with, for example? There are 400+ years between Bede and Geoffrey (I’m going to abbreviate was a respected monk of Jarrow and Geoffrey was an important British cleric, the content matter of him as GoM).
