When commissioners devised a nomenclature for the new U.S. interstate highway system in 1926, east-to-west highways were given even numbers, with the most important routes being assigned numbers ending in “0.” The new Chicago-Los Angeles highway was named Route 60, but a few other states claimed their interstate highway should get that all-important designation, and the number 66 was designated to keep the project from stalling. 2.
