    WORCESTER ART MUSEUM The Worcester Art Museum Announces a Full Slate of Summer Public Programming New programs this summer include “Drill Like a Medieval Soldier” and Art Garden at WAM Worcester, MA (May 22, 2019) — The Worcester Art Museum (WAM) today announced a full slate of summer public programs, designed to engage visitors with art both in and outside the Museum. From themed guided tours to courtyard games and a new “Drill Like a Medieval Soldier” activity, there is something for all ages and interests. Stroller Tours introduce young children to the Museum with age-appropriate themes, such as “Shapes in Art” and “Painted Pets.” Expanded docent-guided gallery tours explore a variety of topics, from gardens to fashion, while arms and armor demonstrations delve into the cultures and accoutrements of knights and soldiers from Vikings to New England militia. New this summer is the Art Garden at WAM, a community project with the Southeast Asian Coalition of Massachusetts (SEACMA) and Regional Environmental Council (REC) which features an outdoor garden installation designed by Boston artist Andrew Mowbray. Planted with vegetables common to Southeast Asia, the garden harvest will be sold to local markets, with funds supporting SEACMA programs in immigrant and refugee communities throughout central Massachusetts. WAM visitors will be able to observe the garden as it grows and changes throughout the summer. Related programs, including story time in the garden and a family workshop, are also planned. Special exhibitions on view during the summer include: Radiance Rediscovered: Stained Glass by Tiffany and La Farge, which showcases the exquisite artistry and luminescent colors of recently conserved stained-glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge, as well as other works by the artists.

Jean and Myles McDonough Director of the Worcester Art Museum Museum Studies and Sustainability Program, May 30, 2019, 11 a.m. Good morning! I am honored to be here today to celebrate with you, to recognize your well-deserved achievement, and to share some insights that I have learned from 25+ years in the museum field, on both sides of the Atlantic. Museums are places where magic happens. Museums bring the past to life, expose us to new ideas, open our eyes to mind-bending creativity, unlock the mysteries of the universe, and so much more. Museums are also eminently political, something we should be aware of and make decisions accordingly. For me, an enduring part of working at museums has always been the close-up, personal experience of art. I started my career several decades ago at the Louvre Museum in Paris. On Tuesdays at lunchtime, when the museum was closed to the public, I would walk through the galleries on my way to the canteen where I had the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s Slaves, and the Venus of Milo all to myself. That magic “one on one time” continues to be with me. The opportunity to connect with myriad and inspiring aspects of human creativity still drives my work to this day. Yet it would be a mistake to isolate this magic from the bigger picture. Legacy institutions—the Louvre among them—reflect a history of political dominance, societal turmoil and inequality. Colonialism, the enslavement and genocide of African and native peoples, and the immense environmental destruction that went along with it are intricately connected to the thriving art market and production of the time.

The works span 5,000 years of art and culture, ranging from ancient Roman mosaics to Colonial silver, Impressionist paintings and contemporary art. Dedicated to the promotion of art and art education, the Museum offers a year-round studio art and art appreciation program that enrolls over 6,000 adult and youth students each year. Public tours are offered Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m., September through May. Audio tours are also available in English and Spanish. Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. (evening hours sponsored by Commerce Bank), and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and full-time college students with current ID, and FREE for Members and all youth 17 and under.     WORCESTER ART MUSEUM Worcester Art Museum elects five new trustees at 124th annual meeting Worcester, MA—November 13, 2020—The Worcester Art Museum announced today that it has elected five new members to its Board of Trustees. Margaret McEvoy-Ball of Worcester, Jonathan R. Sigel of Westborough, Cynthia L. Strauss of Wellesley, George W. Tetler III of Worcester, and Christina Villena of Westborough were all elected for three-year terms. The election took place at the Museum’s 124th annual Corporators meeting, held on Thursday, November 12 virtually via Zoom. In addition, Lisa H. McDonough of Worcester was elected for a third, three-year term, and Jennifer C. Glowik-Adams of Shrewsbury and Thomas P. McGregor of Shrewsbury were elected for second, three-year terms. Dorothy Chen-Courtin of Harvard was elected to her first two-year term as President, taking over from Lisa Kirby Gibbs of Worcester, who served as President for the past four years. The Museum also elected 17 new Corporators for five-year terms: John P. Brissette of Worcester; Anne Byers of Holliston; Germán Chiriboga of Worcester; Bryan J. Coleman of Oxford; Lawrence H. Curtis of Boxford; John Duggan of Worcester; Eve Griliches of Harvard; Dr. Oliver C. Joseph of Worcester; Bruce King of Kennebunkport, ME; Margaret McEvoy-Ball of Worcester; Lisa S.
