Filippenko, Professor of Astronomy University of California - Berkeley Alex Filippenko received his B.A. in Physics from UC Santa Barbara in 1979, and his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Caltech in 1984. He then became a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley, and he joined the Berkeley faculty in 1986. His primary areas of research are supernovae, active galaxies, black holes, and observationalcosmology; he has also spearheaded efforts to develop robotic telescopes. He has coauthored over 400 publications on these topics, and has won numerous awards for his research, most recently a Guggenheim Fellowship. A dedicated and enthusiastic instructor, he has won the top teaching awards at UC Berkeley, and in 1995, 2001, and 2003 he o was voted the "Best Professor" on campus in informal student polls. In 1998 he produced a 40- i lecture astronomy video course with The Teaching Company, and in 2003 he taped a 16-lecture update on recent astronomical discoveries. In 2000 he coauthored an award-winning b introductory astronomy textbook; the second edition appeared in 2003. Evidence from Type Ia Supernovae for a Decelerating, then Accelerating Universe and Dark Energy The measured distances of type Ia (hydrogen- t deficient) supernovae as a function of redshift c (z) have shown that the expansion of the Universe is currently accelerating, probably a due to the presence of repulsive dark energy (X) such as Einstein's cosmological constant r (L). Combining all of the data with existing t results from large-scale structure surveys, we find a best fit for WM and WX of 0.28 and s 0.72 (respectively), in excellent agreement with b the values (0.27 and 0.73) recently derived from WMAP measurements of the cosmic a microwave background radiation.

It is an inspiring facility and location, and it has taken the hard work of many individuals to make it a reality. At UCSB in the 1980’s and 1990’s, Marine Science facilities could be described as dispersed, inadequate, and not up to the standards of a world class research institution. Long-standing efforts to get a facility approved and built had met with no success. However, things began to change with the identification of a State of California program that provided a financing mechanism for research facilities dedicated to long-term scientific activities.

    THE 61ST ANNUAL FACULTY RESEARCH LECTURE Joseph Incandela Searching for the Genetic Code of our Universe Monday, October 17, 2016 / FREE 4:00 PM Reception/ 5:00 PM Lecture Corwin Pavilion University Center The 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson at the CERN LHC accelerator complex completes a powerful and comprehensive description of nature known as the standard model of particle physics. The next step is to find the new physics that underpins this model, which many physicists believe could solve mysteries first seen in astrophysical and cosmological data, such as dark matter and neutrino mixing. Professor Incandela will give a general overview of where things stand and what's being planned, including his own research plans to address these very fundamental questions about the universe. Joseph Incandela received his PhD from the University of Chicago under Professor Henry Frisch in 1986 for a search for magnetic monopoles using superconducting coils whose currents were measured by Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices. Awarded a CERN Fellowship in 1987, he joined the UA2 experiment at CERN and was a leading contributor to the first precision measurement of the mass of the Z boson. He then proposed and led the first search at a hadron collider for a Higgs boson using hadronic tau decay final states. He joined the CDF experiment as a Wilson Fellow at Fermilab in 1991 where he led silicon detector projects and also led the search for top quarks that provided the most significant contribution to the discovery of the top quark in 1995. With regard to the LHC, he created the US CMS Silicon tracker project in 1997 that eventually constructed and tested ~60% (by area) of the silicon strip tracking system.

The institute brings together marine researchers from across the UCSB campus and supports multi-investigator collaborative projects and individual research efforts. The scientific membership at MSI consists of both ladder faculty and professional researchers. In 2018-2019 MSI membership included 25 ladder faculty and 32 professional researchers with 228 additional participants distributed across postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and undergraduates. Beyond research, MSI’s Research Experience and Education Facility (REEF) educates UCSB students and the general public about MSI science. MSI is housed in the marine science research building (MSRB) on the UCSB campus.
