Besides, the statement that “the battle of Waterloo was won on the play fields of Eton”, implies that sports help to develop a spirit of sportsmanship and inculcate lasting values including discipline, hard work and patriotism in people. But perhaps the most significant aspect about sports is that they are associated with morale of the people. Indeed, when India wins a cricket match, the whole country feels victorious. I would like to evoke an incidence in this regard. After dismantling the apartheid policy and repealing apartheid legislation, South Africa held its first universal elections in 1994. At that time, there were widespread tensions between „white‟ and „black‟ factions of the society. South Africa hosted 1995 Rugby World cup. The then president Nelson Mandela, realizing the importance of South African performance in boosting morale of the people as well as for racial harmony, supported his team passionately by meeting the players many times and being present in the stadium to watch all their matches. The National Sports Policy recognized the need to bring in adequate facilities for promotion of sports and games through various sources. Since then, several doping cases have been reported in sports competition world wide. Positive results are based on the detection of prohibited substances, their metabolites and markers in biological (mainly urine) samples supplied by athletes. In some cases, the evidences were not contested and athletesadmitted the use of banned substances. However, in other cases, athletes denied the use of doping to enhance performance and claimed to have inadvertently or passively absorbed the drug. Unfortunately, no current accepted analytical method is capable of distinguishing between a sample from a cheater and one from an athlete who was passively exposed to a doping agent. Athletes’ allegations have included the passive inhalation of drug smoke (e.g.marijuana) or the ingestion of food or products sold as nutritional supplements that contained prohibited substances. In the scientific literature, several studies have been performed to investigate the possibility of an accidental exposure being the reason for the appearance of detectable quantities of banned substances in urine samples.
