The Botanic Garden of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz contributes in many ways to the attainment and communication of knowledge in university research, teaching and education. The garden was established 1946. It covers an area of nearly 9 hectare (2500 m2 under glass) and cultivates some 8000 plant species, varieties and cultivars from all over the world. Apart from its main responsibilities in research and education, the garden is involved in the cultivation of endangered plant species and endeavours to contribute to the conservation of the biological diversity. The garden is located in the mild viniculture climate of the Rhein Main Area. Many sensitive plants from more southern regions can therefore be cultivated in the open all year through. In the collections, emphasis is placed on trees and shrubs of the northern hemisphere, plants from the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, and Australia, and on tropical and subtropical crops. Of special importance are plants of the “Mainzer Sand”, a nature reserve with steppe- like vegetation unique to Central Europe. The Botanic Garden of the Johannes Gutenberg-University is a registered member of IPEN (International Plant Exchange Network; https://www.bgci.org/our-work/policy-and-advocacy /access-and-benefit-sharing/the-international-plant-exchange-network/). With regard to the acquisition, maintenance and supply of plant material, the garden acts in a manner that is consistent to the letter and spirit of the Biodiversity Convention, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and in compliance with all relevant conventions and laws relating to the protection of biological diversity. 2 Index Seminum 2020 MJG Botanischer Garten Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz Germany All seeds were collected 2019 in the Botanic Garden Acanthaceae 1 Acanthus hungaricus (Borbás) Baen. ! Alpine Garden Club of British Columbia Seed Exchange 2019 Alpine Garden Club of British Columbia Seed Exchange 2019 We are very grateful to all those members who have made our Seed Exchange possible through donating seeds. The number of donors was significantly down this year, which makes the people who do donate even more precious. We particularly want to thank the new members who donated seed in their first year with the Club. A big thank-you also to those living locally who volunteer so much time and effort to packaging and filling orders. READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE FILLING IN THE REQUEST FORM. PLEASE KEEP YOUR SEED LIST, packets will be marked by number only. Return the enclosed request form by mail or, if you have registered to do so, by the on-line form, as soon as possible, but no later than DECEMBER 8. Allocation: Donors may receive up to 60 packets and non-donors 30 packets, limit of one packet of each selection. Donors receive preference for seeds in short supply (USDA will permit no more than 50 packets for those living in the USA). List first choices by number only, in strict numerical order, from left to right on the order form. Enter a sufficient number of second choices in the spaces below, since we may not be able to provide all your first choices. Please print clearly. Please be aware that we have again listed wild collected seed (W) and garden seed (G) of the same species separately, which is more convenient for people ordering on-line.

  • Review of Taxons from Genus Muscari Cultivated in Department of Ornamental Plants in Szczecin
Review of taxons from genus Muscari cultivated in Department of Ornamental Plants in Szczecin KRZYSZTOF WRAGA*, Monika Placek Department of Ornamental Plants West Pomeranian University of Technology Janosika 8, 71-424 Szczecin, Poland *corresponding author: e-mail: [email protected] S u m m a r y There is a great disarray in the taxonomy of genus Muscari. About 200 taxons are cul- tivated. Many plant names have their synonyms. The most often cultivated taxons are Muscari armeniacum and M. botryoides. Also M. aucheri and M. latifolium have become more popular. It is difficult to find information on growth, development and hardiness of grape hyacinths. In 2008−2009 in the Department of Ornamental Plants in West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin a collection of taxons from genus Muscari was gathered. M. arme- niacum and its cultivars: ‘Blue Spike’, ‘Cantab’, ‘Heavenly Blue’, ‘Atlantic’, ‘Blue Pearl’ and ‘Fantasy Creation’; M. aucheri and its cultivars ‘Blue Magic’, ‘Dark Eyes’, ‘Mount Hood’, ‘Sky Blue’ and ‘White Beauty’; M. azureum; M. botryoides; M. comosum; M. latifolium; M. macro- carpum; M. muscarimi; M. neglectum and M. ‘Valerie Finnis’ were collected and described in this article. Key words: Muscari, taxon, collection INTRODuCTION Grape hyacinths are popular spring blooming bulbs. Most of them originate from the Mediterranean region and from SE Asia. It is difficult to find how many species of genus Muscari are cultivated. Authors describe from 30 to over 60 species, but new taxons have been described for all the time [1-4, www.home- 3.tiscali.nl/~hennessy/Species%20and%20cultivars.htm, www.paghat.com/garden- Review of taxons from genus Muscari cultivated in Department of Ornamental Plants in Szczecin 349 7hyacinths.html].

TURKISH SILK ROAD TRIP REPORT 2019 1 Day 1 6 May To Goreme We all arrived from various places to Cappadocia. Day 2 7 May Cappadocia I A fine clear morning revealed the remarkable convoluted landscape of Cappadocia – a blend of towers and smooth-eroded hills, some pink some cream. We met with our guide Gaye and set off for a quieter part of this popular region. Our first stop was near a small church and above this the path led to a fine lookout across the landscape including some amazing chimneys capped with dark hats of denser rock. Indeed, it is the rapid erosion of the various layers of compacted ash that have created this landscape, a legacy of the regions intensely volcanic past. There many Alpine Swifts sweeping overhead and a few interesting flowers with tufts of bluish Trigonella coerulescens, Silene conoidea, Euphorbia sp and big patches of Eruca sativa that were a magnet for the many Painted Ladies on the wing. We moved on to another site with an old monastery that still retained some very old frescoes and painted ceilings as well as a very old Seljuk mosque. Here there was plentiful Hypercoum pseudograndiflorum along the paths. Uta exchanged tips on bean cultivation with a local farmer who spoke a smattering of German before we left. Lunch was in a cherry orchard, thronging with butterflies as well as by chance, being next to a nesting Long-eared Owl which peered down at us the whole time we were there. Then it was onto see a special plant, crossing the undulating steppes and wheat fields to an innocuous-looking hill.

The results indicate that the taxa generally differ from each other in terms of seed shape and dimension. Seed dimensions vary between 1.66 mm and 3.21 mm in length, and between 1.12 mm and 2.63 mm in width. The seed surface ornamentation is grouped into nine forms: ru- minate, reticulate, reticulate-areolate, reticulate-foveate, alveolate, scalariform, rugose, verrucate and areolate. The most common type is ruminate, while areolate, reticulate-foveate and scalariform ornamentation forms were found to be taxon-specific. Testa structures of the taxa examined consist in general of two different layers: the epidermis and the subepidermis in scleranchymatous or parenchymatous structures. The subepidermis may be absent in some of taxa. The structure and thickness of the epidermis and the subepidermis are very important characteristics that dis- close interspecific relations among the examined taxa.

The Botanic Garden of the Johannes Gutenberg Universitiy was founded in 1946 and is part of the Institut für Spezielle Botanik at the Department of Biology. The Garden covers an area of nearly 9 ha (2500 m 2 under glass) and cultivates some 8000 plant species, varieties and cultivars from all over the world.

SEED PRODUCTION IN HYBRID DAHLIA A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Seed Technology at Massey University Palmerston North New Zealand SONGVUT PHETPRADAP 1992 ABSTRACT Seed grown dahlias lack uniformity of growth habit and are particularly erratic bloomers. This results in a wide range of seed maturities within a plant and creates major problems for seed harvest. In an attempt to reduce the spread of flowering and improve uniformity, crop manipUlation by hand pinching and the application of three plant growth regulators was investigated in field grown dahlia (Dahlia hybrida) cvs. Unwins Dwarl Mixture and Figaro White. In 1987/88 the effects of pinching above nodes 3, 4 and 5 on flowering pattern, flower production and seed yield of dahlia cv. Unwins Dwarf Mixture were determined. Pinching had no effect on the number of flowers per plant or total flowering period. However pinching did shorten the days from first to peak flowering because of increased uniformity of lateral branch growth. Pinching above node 4 increased harvested seed yield by 40 % and cleaned seed yield by 32 % but only the former result was significant. Although pinching above node 4 also produced more seedheads per plant and seeds per seedhead than in non pinched plants, differences were once again non-significant.
