When he was 25 standard years old, he was caught up in the important events of the Battle of Naboo. At the time he was a Padawan learner, apprenticed to Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. At the behest of Supreme Chancellor Valorum, Obi-Wan and his Master secretly voyaged to Naboo to negotiate a peaceful settlement to the tense Trade Federation blockade of the planet. Aboard a Trade Federation vessel, the scheming Neimoidians sprung a trap on the Jedi, and attempted to kill them. Kenobi and his Master escaped and stowed away on Trade Federation invasion craft landing on Naboo's surface. Following his Master, Obi-Wan voyaged from Naboo to Coruscant and back during the intrigue that surrounded the Battle of Naboo. When Qui-Gon Jinn brought a freed young slave boy, Anakin Skywalker, before the Jedi Council, Obi-Wan was taken aback. Qui-Gon claimed that Anakin was the Chosen One of an ancient Jedi prophecy, and that he was to be Jinn's new Padawan learner, replacing Obi-Wan. The council refused Jinn's proposal to train the boy. This was just one of many disagreements that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn had during their time together. Jinn, a proponent of the living Force over the more serene unifying Force, had long been a maverick in the eyes of the Jedi Council. Obi-Wan implored his Master not to go against the Council, but Qui-Gon always responded by saying that he must do as the will of the Force advises. During the liberation of Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were challenged by a deadly Sith Lord. A forgotten menace, the Sith had returned after centuries of seeming extinction. For the first time in ages, Jedi and Sith dueled. The dark warrior, Darth Maul, used his incredible speed, rage and his double- ended lightsaber to fend off both Jedi. As the duel progressed, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon became separated. Kenobi watched helplessly as Maul killed Qui-Gon, and he rushed to kill the Sith Lord in turn. Qui-Gon's dying words were a request for Obi-Wan to train Anakin, despite the Council's objections. The Council ultimately agreed with Obi-Wan taking Anakin as a Padawan -- though Jedi Master Yoda had strong reservations about it.     STAR WARS: THE FASCISM AWAKENS 7 Star Wars: The Fascism Awakens Representation and its Failure from the Weimar Republic to the Galactic Senate Chapman Rackaway University of West Georgia Whether in science fiction or the establishment of an earthly democracy, constitutional design matters especially in the realm of representation. Democracies, no matter how strong or fragile, can fail under the influence of a poorly constructed representation plan. Two strong examples of representational failure emerge from the post-WWI Weimar Republic and the Galactic Republic’s Senate from the Star Wars saga. Both legislatures featured a combination of overbroad representation without minimum thresholds for minor parties to be elected to the legislature and multiple non- citizen constituencies represented in the body. As a result both the Weimar Reichstag and the Galactic Senate fell prey to a power-hungry manipulating zealot who used the divisions within their legislature to accumulate power. As a result, both democracies failed and became tyrannical governments under despotic leaders who eventually would be removed but only after wars of massive casualties. Representation matters, and both the Weimer legislature and Galactic Senate show the problems in designing democratic governments to fairly represent diverse populations while simultaneously limiting the ability of fringe groups to emerge. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of representative democracies. There were those who came to realize this deterioration of Democracy and pledged to break away from the crumbling government. When this splitting came to all out war, the Republic was ready to answer their enemy’s call to arms with their Grand Army of the Republic. Below is a chronicling of those who remained loyal to the Republic and for what it stood. Palpatine – Supreme Chancellor of the Republic Palpatine began his political career on his home world of Naboo at approximately twenty years of age. Fresh out of Naboo’s public service, his early political life was mired with a series of dissatisfying electoral defeats at the hands of several opponents. For nearly a decade, Palpatine maintained a drab governmental portfolio until his first big break occurred when he was thirty years old. The incumbent senator of Naboo, Vidar Kim, was assassinated in a drive-by shooting, leaving Palpatine running unopposed. He was elected to serve as the next Senator of the Chommell Sector’s thirty-seven inhabited worlds. Taking his position on the Senate floor on Coruscant, Palpa- tine led a fairly meek political record.

    Star Wars Day 4th May In a Galaxy Far, Far Away…… May the fourth has become Star Wars Day for its close resemblance to the catch phrase, “May the force be with you”. Regardless of whether you are a fan or not, the Star Wars phenomenon has had a huge impact on modern life. It has introduced a number of sayings and spin off/ copies of the movie. Whilst it may seem silly to celebrate such a day, it is one of the happiest days of the year. It began as an in joke that most people who had seen Star Wars was in on and it became a day where people joined together in Star Wars silliness regardless of their background. Star Wars was an epic movie that was written and directed by George Lucas and premiered in 1977. It became a worldwide smash hit. Audiences had seen nothing like it before, sat in the theatre watching the enormous words scroll up the screen at the beginning of the movie, then the special effects which today seem so basic and yet, back then, were just fantastic! It took us all to a fantasy place we had never been before. Characters such as Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, C3P0, R2D2, Darth Vader, Yoda and Obi – Wan Kenobi. Today, 40+ years later there are still movies in franchise being made watched. Merchandise is sort after and some things are worth thousands of dollars to collectors. A lightsabre of Luke Skywalkers sold for over $172,000 and a camera used by George Lucas sold for $625,000.

In Episode One: The Phantom Menace, in the very first paragraph of the opening crawl, we learned that taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems was in dispute. The Galactic Senate had imposed taxes to fight interplanetary pirates, and in response, the Trade Foundation had blockaded shipping to Naboo to pressure the Senate into repealing those taxes. The Supreme Chancellor dispatched two Jedi Knights to resolve the dispute…and the adventure begins! Yes, more to the story there is than that. The Sith Lord Darth Sidious — masquerading as Senator Palpatine — used the dispute to seize dictatorial powers, declare himself Emperor, lure Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side, commission a Death Star factory, and proceed to ravage the Galaxy. But really…dig down deep enough, past the epic space battles, light saber duels, and colorful aliens inhabiting Mos Eisley's cantina (aka "the bar scene"), and you'll find just another battle over tariffs.
