Varsity men’s lacrosse comes to Albright College for the first time ever this spring, and head coach Jake Plunket has assembled a squad of 30 players ready to make their mark in the Lions’ inaugural season.

Plunket comes to Reading after two years as an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney College in . He previously won two Division I national championships as a player at Syracuse, and a Division III national title as an assistant coach with SUNY-Cortland.

With 26 freshmen, four sophomores and zero upperclassmen, the Lions will have . perhaps the youngest roster in the nation. “We are looking to progress as a team and get better every day,” said Plunket.

“With no senior leadership ahead of them, these players have the opportunity to go out and compete right away and I think that’s something a young college kid really looks forward to.”

While green, Albright certainly isn’t lacking in talent or potential. In goal, Andrew Torak is an outstanding shot-stopper who faced top talent in high school. He is expected to get the start in the cage and will play a huge role as the Lions look to hang with the more experienced programs on their schedule. Freshman T.J. Defensively, Cody Sandy comes from Homer High School in New York (Plunket’s Holston alma mater) and will be counted on along with Sean Cunningham. Cunningham is a Drexel lacrosse transfer and a key player on Albright’s football team. “He will be a huge leader and a physical presence on the defensive end,” said Plunkett.

Michael Taggart is projected to start at long stick midfield, and is one of the most intelligent lacrosse players on the field. Challenging him is Joe Devinney, who In July of 2010 Albright College received a $1 million gift from the John K. Roessner III Trust to build a new multisport field. also played football in the fall.
