Introduction In 1774, Mary Scott published The Female Advocate; A Poem. Occasioned by Reading Mr. Buncombe's Feminead. Scott regrets that "it was only on a small number of Female Geniuses that Gentleman bestowed the wreath ofFame" (v), and attempts to rectify this by honoring these "Female Geniuses" in her poem. Scotfhonors such names as Queen Elizabeth, the novelist Charlotte Lennox, the Bluestocking Elizabeth Montagu, and Sarah Fielding. About Fielding, Scott writes: *Twas FIELDING'S talent, with ingenuous Art, To trace the secret mazes of the Heart. In language tun'd to please its infant thought. The tender breast with prudent care SHE taught. Nature to HER, her boldest pen lent. And blest HER with a mind of vast extent; A mind, that nobly scorn'd each low desire. And glow'd with pure Religion's warmest fire. (22-23) Although Gae Holladay claims that Scott's poems "indicate strong religious fervor" (iii), it is interesting that Scott acknowledges the religious aspect of Sarah Fielding's work, choosing to end the poem by a mention of how her mind "glow'd with pure Religion's wannest fire." Although it seems as if Fielding's contemporaries recognized Christianity to be central to her writing, much recent criticism neglects to mention this aspect of her work, or relegates it to a brief discussion. However, it is rather obvious to anyone reading Fielding's most famous novel. The Adventures ofDavid Simple orits sequel Volume the Last} that Fielding's writing ^The Adventures ofDavid Simple: Containing an Account ofhis Travels Through the Cities ofLondon and Westminster, In the Search ofa Real Friend was publishedin 1744,followed by a second edition "Revised and Corrected With a PrefaceBy HenryFielding" in the same year. In 1747 Fieldingpublished Familiar Letters Between the Principal Characters in DavidSimple, AndSome Others. To Which is addedA Vision, although this workis onlytangentially connected to theevents of the firstbook. The Adventures ofDavidSimple. Volume theLast, In Which HisHistory is Concluded, which could be considered a "true"sequel, was published in 1753. Most commentators only discuss The Adventures ofDavid Simple and Volume theLast, choosing to ignore FamiliarLetters. There are three modem editions ofDavid Simple, all alsocontaining Volume the Last, butnot Familiar Letters. The fu-st was published by Oxford University Pressin 1969andeditedwithan is greatly influenced by the prevailing Anglican discourse ofthe period. It is the religious aspect ofFielding's work with which this essay is mainly concerned. This religious context is essential for an understanding ofDavid Simple and sentimental literature in general. It has been acknowledged by commentators that Fielding created one of the first, or even perhaps the first, men of feeling in English literature. Gerald Barker argues that Fielding "anticipates the novel of feeling decades before such writers as Mackenzie, Goldsmith, and Henry Brooke" and goes on to state that together "with Lucius Manley, the hero of Mary Collyer's Felicia to Charlotte (1744), David Simple shares the distinction of being one of the two earliest examples of the Man of Feeling in English fiction" (69). Likewise, FelicityNussbaum states that in "David Simple, SarahFielding creates perhaps the first man of feeling" (436). There is little question, then, that as an early writer of "sentimental"^ fiction and as perhaps the originator of the English man of feeling, historically Fielding is an extremely important writer. Until recently, however, shehas received very littlecritical attention. Thishaschanged in the pasttwenty years or so, andrecently there has been much published on her work, especially on the DavidSimple series. introduction by Malcolm Kelsall. This edition uses the second edition ofDavid Simple, edited by Henry Fielding. In 1998 Kentucky University Press published the first edition ofDavid Simple, edited with an introduction by Peter Sabor. This is the version that will be referred tothroughout this essay. In2002 Penguin Classics published the first edition edited with an introduction by Linda Bree. In this essay, I will generally refer to The Adventures ofDavid Simple as David Simple and David Simple. Volume the Last as Volume the Last. 2 As pointed• out by Tim Pamell (xv), the term "sentimental novel" is somewhat controversial. For example, John Richetti argues that "the term 'sentimental novel' is broadly uninformative" because almost all eighteenth- century fiction "explores moral problems, meditating on the difficulty ofregulating the passions and navigating virtuously through avicious and unjust world" (247). For a discussion ofsentimentalism see Janet Todd, Sensibility: An Introduction (London: Methuen, 1986), GJ.Barker-Benfield, The Culture ofSensibility: Sex andSociety inEighteenth-Century Britain (Chicago: Chicago University Press, 1992), John Mullan, Sentiment ' and Sociability: The Language ofFeeling in the Eighteenth Century (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1988) and Ann Jessie Van Sant, Eighteenth-Century Sensibility and the Novel: The Senses in Social Context (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1993). Since it seems likely that Sarah Fielding had a significant hand in creating and setting the agenda for the English man of feeling of the period, it is worthwhile to examine the origins ofthis phenomenon. Although the cultural factors that influenced the sensibility of the period are complex and varied, perhaps the most important is Christianity, and Anglicanism specifically. Tim Pamell observes that the "Anglican discourse is among the most significant in the complex of discourses and ideas that informed the eighteenth-century 'cult', or culture, of sensibility" (xv). The period's Christianinfluence on the mid-century novel of sentiment is documentedin R.S. Crane's influential essay "Suggestions Towarda Genealogy of the 'Man of Feeling.'" Cranediscusses writings and sermons by Anglican divines of the Restoration and earlyeighteenth-century to locatethe origins of "the peculiar moral doctrine which lay back of the mid-eighteenth-century cult of the 'man of feeling'" (206). Crane writes: What I wouldsuggest, in short, is thatthekey to thepopulartriumph of "sentimentalism" toward 1750 is to besought, notso much in the teaching of individual lay moralists after 1700, as in the combined influence of numerous Anglican divines of the Latitudinarian tradition who from the Restoration onward intothe eighteenth century had preached to theircongregations and, through theirbooks, to the larger public essentially the ... ethics of benevolence, "good nature," and "tender sentimental feeling." (207-208) Crane considers four central aspects of the ethical discourse of these divines during the period from around 1660 toabout 1725: virtue as benevolence, benevolence as feeling, benevolent feelings as natiu-al tohumankind and the joy tobe found in benevolence. One may perhaps see at leastpart of the genesis ofDavid Simple's character in each of Crane's categories. For example, the disagreement between the benevolent David Simple and the rational Mr. Orgueil is probably influenced atleast somewhat by this discourse, as Crane demonstrates a similar dispute in the divines' opposition to the doctrine of Stoicism. He points out that for the divines, the "words 'charity' and 'benevolence' had a double sense, connoting not only the serviceable and philanthropic actions which the good man performs but still more the tender passions and affections which prompt to these actions and constitute their immediate reward"

"e phenomenon of hard-heartedness in Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa is here re-evaluated through John Locke’s concept of “indi#er ency” and through contemporary theories of impersonality. Beginning with an account of the novel’s reception in which readers were unnerved by Clarissa’s refusal to marry her rapist, I locate an important counter-response in Anna Laetitia Barbauld, who valued precisely the quality of impassivity in Richardson’s heroine. In eighteenth-century thought, a similar form of disen gagement is articulated by Locke’s notion of indi#erency, an impartiality that risks alienation for the sake of understanding and autonomy. By featuring an im personal Clarissa, I show how the novel’s theory of character, in which a hidden interiority under writes personhood, contains its own critique of a depth- model of psychology. Student, Graduate Institute of Foreign Languages and Literatures National Taiwan University ABSTRACT The publication of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela in November 1740 was an immediate success, and the frenzy over the immensely popular novel quickly developed into an unprecedented sensational event commonly called “the Pamela controversy.” Among the very first literary responses to the Pamela vogue are Henry Fielding’s Shamela (April 1741) and Eliza Haywood’s Anti-Pamela (June 1741), published within less than two months from each other. A closer look at the three novels, however, reveals that Haywood’s Anti-Pamela is curiously closer in style to Richardson’s Pamela than to Fielding’s Shamela, despite the fact that both Fielding and Haywood aim at attacking Richardson with their parodic novels. As one of the first attempts to deal with the intertextual influences between Richardson’s Pamela and Haywood’s much neglected work Anti-Pamela, in this essay I argue that the similarity in style between the two texts comes not from Haywood’s imitating Richardson, but rather from Richardson’s incorporating elements from the tradition of women’s amatory fiction, of which Haywood’s works in the 1720s constitute a significant part. In other words, despite his consistent disparagement of such writings by women as “influenza,” Richardson’s text betrays his indebtedness to Haywood, and in composing Anti-Pamela, Haywood does not depart much from her earlier novelistic style, thus leading to the false impression that Haywood is following Richardson in style.

Because it is well known that Richardson responded to friendly and antagonistic “collaborators” by making emendations, I also examine the extant documents that played a role in Pamela’s development, including Richardson’s correspondence and contemporary criticisms of the novel. Pamela Reworded, then, is an explanation, exhibition, and interpretation of what Richardson revised, why he revised, and, more importantly, how the revisions affect one’s understanding of the novel and its characters.

English The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Roxann Wheeler, Advisor Frank Donoghue David Brewer Copyright by Mary Jo Crone-Romanovski 2010 Abstract This dissertation provides a spatial history of English novels in the period 1680- 1770. Demonstrating that space is a dynamic source of narrative, I argue that spaces are crucial to the development of new types of novels. Re-organizing novel history according to space allows me to consider eighteenth-century novel types as standalone genres rather than progressive steps toward the formation of the novel as one single, coherent genre. Thus, a spatial history of novels differs from conventional literary histories which situate major novels and authors within a linear model of chronological development and that view eighteenth-century novels as preliminary formal experiments that eventually contribute to the emergence of the nineteenth-century realist novel. Space can register in novels in a number of ways, including geographical distance, topographical location, descriptors of movement, or architectural layout. My study considers, in particular, the spaces that constitute a character‟s immediate physical environment. Each chapter examines a key space as central to a type of novel that flourished during the eighteenth century: gardens in amatory and pious novels, 1680- 1730; staircases, hallways, and closets in the domestic interior in courtship novels of the 1740s; urban homes in mid-century problem marriage novels; and sickrooms in women‟s sentimental novels of the 1750s and 1760s.

    Barbauld‟s Richardson and the Canonisation of Personal Character On 4 September 1804, Richard Lovell Edgeworth wrote to Anna Letitia Barbauld to acquaint her with the attention that her recent edition of The Correspondence of Samuel Richardson (1804) had received in the Edgeworth household: We have read the greatest part of Richardson‟s Life and Correspondence. Your criticisms are excellent, and your censures of the indecent passages in your author are highly becoming and highly useful. You have made R[ichardson] appear to great advantage, without using any of the unfaithful arts of an editor. You have shewn, that like other mortals, he had failings; but his enthusiasm for virtue, his generosity, and true politeness of heart and conduct, are brought so distinctly before the eye, that we love the man as much as we admire the author.1 Loving “the man” and admiring “the author” here appear as complementary responses in the Edgeworth family‟s reading experience, a complementarity that is reflected in Richard Edgeworth‟s views on Barbauld‟s literary and biographical criticisms. In Edgeworth‟s reading of the “Life and Correspondence,” the author and his novels merge, as do Barbauld‟s evaluations of Richardson‟s biographical and fictional narratives. Edgeworth thus shows himself a judicious 1.     Truth and Conjecture: Forms of Detection in Eighteenth-Century British Fiction Rashmi Sahni Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Rashmi Sahni All rights reserved ABSTRACT Truth and Conjecture: Forms of Detection in Eighteenth-Century British Fiction Rashmi Sahni This study tracks tensions between different modes of knowledge in a body of eighteenth-century fictions centered around themes of detection and punishment of crimes, exemplary among which are Aphra Behn’s The History of the Nun (1689), Daniel Defoe’s Roxana (1724), Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa (1748), Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones (1749), and William Godwin’s Caleb Williams (1794). Focusing on crimes as varied as forgery, rape, and murder, this set of fictions raises important questions about eighteenth-century narrative techniques and formal elements. For example, why is the narrator of Aphra Behn’s The History of the Nun at once omniscient and limited? Why does the ending of Defoe’s Roxana seem abrupt and inconclusive? Critics struggle to find satisfactory answers to these questions because they often read intrusive narrators, abrupt conclusions, and disconcerting tonal shifts as stylistic faults or as ineptitude at realistic narration. I argue that formal peculiarities of eighteenth-century fiction about criminal investigation are in fact revealing narrative symptoms of an attempt to resolve conflicts between competing theories of knowledge rooted

The text is extremely rare, and few " modem readers of Clarissa are familiar with it. In North America it is particularly hard to find. The National Union Catalog lists only two copies in the Western Hemisphere ( at the Yale 13einecke 1,, I'' Library and at the University of Vancouver) although there are 11 ,, others: the copy the author presented to Mrs. David Garrick is in ,1,, I the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library, and a copy apparently owned by Mirabeau while he was a member of the Constituent Assembly is at the University of Kentucky and 'Yas loaned to AMS Press for this reprinting. Not only does the Third ·r EdiHon present the most complete text of Clarissa, but its unique apparatus and graphic devices have not been printed as part of the novel since 1751.

Signed: _________________________________________________ Date: ________________ 3 ABSTRACT Much has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him.
