FOR MORE UPDATES, FOLLOW @GETINTHEMECHA 1 GETINTHEMECHA.Home.Blog GETINTHEMECHA.home.blog EPISODE 4: boruto at 100 Boruto anime analysis NOTE FROM JAMAL: Hey All! Thanks for reading the show notes for another week! Hopefully in future episodes, I can get to analysing a lot of these arcs from both the anime and manga. The Boruto manga at the moment has been really juicy, with the Ao Arc and (current) Kawaki Arc; I am buzzing to analyse all of this! The same applies to Shingeki No Kyojin at the moment, as well as many other shows I am immersed in right now. As always, thanks for the support! Boruto has finally hit 100 episodes, but it has definitely been an interesting journey. In this piece, I would just like to go through some of the arcs or key moments that caught my interest along the way. THE SHIN / SARADA UCHIHA ARC: This arc, for sure, competes as one of, if not, my favourite arc in the Boruto series so far for a variety of reasons. The first has to be the insanely impressive fight between Sarada and the new enemy, Shin Uchiha. The use of the surrounding environment (in the cave) was what made this really special; it was able to capture a variety of angles and also track the two of them battle it out for the first time. Another reason why I enjoyed this so much was simply the ‘shock’ factor that came with the appearance of Shin Uchiha. By the end of the Naruto: Shippuden (2007), it was almost made a fact that Sasuke was the last remaining Uchiha in his clan, after the deaths of Madara and Obito, so to see a sharingan ‘on’ somebody else was a massive surprise. For both of these very reasons and a few side points, I am really pleased with how this turned out. VERSUS MOMOSHIKI ARC: I definitely consider this the best arc in anime so far, primarily due to its longevity and how much it contributes to everything that occurs after it, with the emergence of ‘Karma’ and the Jougan Eye. When talking about the Momoshiki Arc, I feel as if it would be a cardinal sin not to mention the holy episode 65, the penultimate episode to the arc, featuring the best fight of the year (you got it wrong Crunchyroll!) directed by Chengxi Huang and executed by an amazing team. Simply put, I think the fight demonstrated what a ‘fight scene’ is all about, in the space of a few minutes. ff FOR MORE UPDATES, FOLLOW @GETINTHEMECHA 1 GETINTHEMECHA.home.blog Show note! EPISODE 1: a demon emerges BLUE EXORCIST ANALYSIS AND REVIEW MITSUKI RESCUE ARC: This arc makes me upset, as I feel that it barely does anything for the series,, besides ‘reconfirm’ Mitsuki’s loyalty to Konoha and his comrades. It also dragged on for a very long time and considering it was a ‘filler’ arc, it felt almost as if its true intention was to fill space (which it is, but at least make it an enjoyable and interesting one)! There were a few cool moments in this, such as the fight between Sarada and Kakou, but besides this, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking to get in the series quickly. THE TRUTH OF MITSUKI (EPISODE 39): This episode was definitely a better showcase of what Mitsuki had to offer in the series, with a great fight scene to accompany it and a shocking twist that changed my view of Mitsuki (prior to the Mitsuki Rescue Arc). Overall, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (2017) shows a large amount of potential, but sadly does not always perform as if it has the potential to create exciting and gripping episodes consistently. With the most recent parts of the manga and the opening scene of the anime, I am hopeful the show can evolve into something greater than it is at the moment.     Crimes of Passion: Collecting Fan-made Comics and Dōjinshi In 2010, I attended New York Comic Con with a single mission. I was an art student at the time, pursuing my dream of becoming a comic book artist. While there were many big publishers in the hall that day, it was an unofficial item I wanted: Water Tribe Vol. 1 & 2 by Johane Matte, a 447-page comic about a villian from the Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: the Last Airbender. Matte was not only a prolific “fan artist” of the show during its run, but worked on it as a storyboard artist for several episodes. Discovering this as a teenager was revolutionary to me, as I began to realize that the line between “professional” and “fan” was not an iron-clad division of skill, but something relative to the circumstances surrounding the creation of a piece of art. Water Tribe Vol. 1 & 2, an Avatar: the Last Airbender fancomic by Johane Matte. Human beings’ compulsion to build off of existing stories is as old as time. Famous examples of “fan fiction” are all around us, from the Aeneid to Sweeney Todd to BBC’s Sherlock. Looking at Matte’s masterfully drawn passion project, it occured to me that most of the modern-day distinctions between official and derivative art - and the assumptions of quality attached to each - were based on concerns of property, not an evaluation of the art itself. There was something incredibly alluring to me about comics art created at a professional standard of quality without the expectation of professional reward.

Caldwell, Chair Japanese creative media – particularly, its comics, animation, and video games – has found success globally, but it is primarily a product made for and by a domestic audience. What characterizes the success of its various creative industries on the domestic level, before they reach out to global spheres? This dissertation attempts to provide an answer to this question by examining the logics of franchise media production in Japan. I conduct ethnographic fieldwork into Japan’s manga and anime industries, as well as close analyses of concomitant transmedia texts, in order to demonstrate the collective authorship that surrounds the production of contemporary media in these industries today. Manga translation involves two important problems in MT: context-aware and multimodal translation. Since text and images are mixed up in an unstructured fash- ion in manga, obtaining context from the image is essential 4 for its translation. However, it is still an open problem how to 2 extract context from images and integrate into MT models. In addition, corpus and benchmarks to train and evaluate such models are currently unavailable. In this paper, we make the 3 following four contributions that establish the foundation of manga translation research. First, we propose a multimodal 5 context-aware translation framework. We are the first to in- corporate context information obtained from manga images. It enables us to translate texts in speech bubbles that cannot be translated without using context information (e.g., texts in other speech bubbles, gender of speakers, etc.).
