H. Mogashoa, Ph.D. Date Completed: March 2014 Landmarkism was a sectarian view of Baptist church history and practice. It arose in the mid-eighteenth century and was a dominant force in the first half-century of the life of the Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination. J. R. Graves was its chief architect, promoter, and apologist. He initiated or helped propagate controversies which shaped Southern Baptist life and practice. His influence spread Landmarkism throughout the Southern Baptist Convention through religious periodicals, books, and educational materials. Key Landmark figures in the seminaries and churches also promoted these views. After over fifty years of significant impact the influence of Landmarkism seemed to diminish eventually fading from sight. Many observers of Southern Baptist life relegated it to a movement of historical interest but no current impact. In an effort to examine this assumption, research was conducted which explored certain theological positions of Graves, other Landmarkers, and sects claimed as the true church by the promoters of Baptist church succession. -

The Nature of the Distinction between the Universal and Local Church in the NT: The Marks of a True Church Jackson Lawson Bi 480 Biblical Studies Seminar April 23, 2019 1 Introduction Although many have used the term “true church,” there has been confusion and disagreement over what is required to have a legitimate NT church. Particularly, there is disagreement over whether discipline as a mark of the church is a mark of a true church or simply a mark of a healthy church (or more biblical church). Rolland McCune states that, “Bible- believing Christians would probably agree on all three” marks that followed the reformation (the third being discipline).1 Albert Mohler Jr., in his journal article titled, “Church Discipline: The Missing Mark,” asserts that, “Evangelicals have long recognized discipline as the ‘third mark’ of the authentic church,” citing the Belgic Confession (1561), that includes discipline as a mark of the true church.2 In the end of his article, Mohler quotes John Leadley Dagg as saying, “It has been remarked, that when discipline leaves a church, Christ goes with it.” Mohler follows this quote by saying, “If so, and I fear it is so, Christ has abandoned many churches who are blissfully unaware of His departure.”3 And yet, as we shall see, John Hammett4 and Mark Dever5 disagree: the mark of discipline is not necessarily required in order for there to be a true church. Does Mohler (as well as McCune) confuse what is required for there to be a true church with what is required for a healthy church? Or are Hammett and Dever wrong? I will establish that they both agree in principle. -

Toward a Definition of Sixteenth - Century habaptism: Twentieth - Century Historiography of the Radical Reformation James R. Coggins Winnipeg "To define the essence is to shape it afresh." - Ernst Troeltsch Twentieth-century Anabaptist historiography has somewhat of the character of Hegelian philosophy, consisting of an already established Protestant-Marxist thesis, a Mennonite antithesis and a recent synthesis. The debate has centred on three major and related issues: geographic origin, intellectual sources, and essence. Complicating these issues has been confusion over the matter of categorization: Just who is to be included among the Anabaptists and who should be assigned to other groups? Indeed, what are the appropriate categories, or groups, in the sixteenth century? This paper will attempt to unravel some of the tangled debate that has gone on concerning these issues. The Protestant interpretation of Anabaptism has the longest aca- demic tradition, going back to the sixteenth century. Developed by such Protestant theologians and churchmen as Bullinger, Melanchthon, Men- ius, Rhegius and Luther who wrote works defining and attacking Ana- baptism, this interpretation arose out of the Protestant understanding of the church. Sixteenth-century Protestants believed in a single universal church corrupted by the Roman Catholic papacy but reformed by them- selves. For convenience all of these "others" were labelled "Anabaptists." Protestants saw the Anabaptists as originating in Saxony with Thomas Muntzer and the Zwickau prophets in 1521 and spreading in subsequent years to Switzerland and other parts of northern Europe. -

Duvall Introduction When Clarence Walker began publishing The Trail of Blood in 1931, neither he nor J. M. Carroll, the author, could have imagined the impact the booklet would have on Baptists in the United States and around the world. The first thousand copies had been sold quickly by another publisher and sales continued steadily from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. Today there have been nearly three million copies sold. The booklet has been enlarged by the present publisher,1 and it has been translated into several other languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and possibly others. It is now on the Internet in at least three languages. The Trail of Blood describes in a brief outline form what successionist historians had written for nearly two centuries. They believed there had been a succession of churches that held the basic doctrines of Baptists, and they were not associated in any way with the Roman Catholic institution. The Trail of Blood does not claim to be a complete history as such, but what might be called a “Baptist Manifesto.” It was written in such a way that pastors and teachers could present a thumbnail sketch of their Baptist ancestors. The Roots of Anabaptist Empathetic Solidarity, Nonviolent Advocacy, and Peacemaking John Derksen Introduction uch of Mennonite nonviolent advocacy and peacebuild- ing today finds its roots in sixteenth-century Anabaptism. But Msixteenth-century Anabaptists were diverse. In keeping with the polygenesis viewSAMPLE of Anabaptist origins, this paper assumes diversity in the geography, origins, cultures, shaping influences, spiritual orientations, attitudes to violence, and other expressions of Anabaptists.1 We define Anabaptists as those who accepted (re)baptism or believer’s baptism and the implications of that choice. Various Anabaptists had sectarian, ascetic, spiri- tualist, social revolutionary, apocalyptic, rationalistic, or other orientations, and the distinctions between them were often blurred. Geographically, they emerged in Switzerland in 1525, in South Germany-Austria in 1526, and in the Netherlands in 1530. Many agree that the Anabaptists displayed 1. Positively, the ‘Word of God’ served as a rallying point for all, but differences . emerged over how it was understood and used.”2 While Swiss Anabaptists tended to fa- vor sectarianism after the 1525 Peasants’ War, South German and Austrian Anabaptists tended more toward spiritualism, and early Dutch Anabaptists tended toward apocalyptic thinking. -

Two connected phenomena were analysed: the structure of two elites merging in Rio de Janeiro when the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil in 1808, or rather, the court society that came to Brazil with the Portuguese king and the wealthy classes that financed the king’s stay in Brazil for thirteen years. Even though the importance of these events in the history of the two countries will not be analysed, this encounter leading to the Independence process some months after the king’s return to Portugal should always be kept in mind. Another aim of this research was the cultural codes that favoured communications between two distinct societies, or rather, between the court society and the working “capitalist” groups dedicated to down-to-earth mercantile strategies controlling the credit system, internal commerce and international slave trafficking to Brazil. -

Beatriz Gallotti Mamigonian (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina) [email protected] There is a little-known painting, by Brazilian academic artist Victor Meireles that depicts Emperor Pedro II in a street scene, surrounded by a crowd who cheers him. It is given in the catalogue of the National Museum of Arts in Rio de Janeiro as “Study for the Christie Affair” (“Estudo para Questão Christie),” circa 1864. It shows the square in front of the Paço Imperial filled with people of both sexes and all classes, ages and colors. The eye is guided to observe the acclamation of the Emperor by just about everyone: those raising their swords and their hats from afar, and those standing close to him such as the well-dressed black man with a goatee who hails the Emperor with his hat. For the second scan, Meireles calls attention to a secondary scene: mounted police tramps over a person in the crowd who seems to be black, before the startled eyes of two young men, one white, one black. Klaassen: I Ate and Drank I Ate and Drank With These Teachers: Martin Luther and Pilgram Marpeck on Being ‘Theologians of the Cross’ Walter Klaassen1 y title could create the impression that it refers to an event in Auerbach’s Keller in Leipzig, or at least to Martin Luther and his students at table talk in Wittenberg. In M fact, it does not refer to a scene at all but to a metaphorical reminiscence of Pilgram Marpeck in 1531 of what had happened to him a decade earlier. Marpeck was commenting on his excitement at learning the truth of the gospel from Lutheran teachers in the early 1520s. The words are found in a tract he wrote in 1531, which was a sharp critique against his former teachers.2 He does not tell us who these teachers were, but we know two of them by name.
