St. Chad’s Church, Ladybarn The Licensing of The Reverend Mark Richard Hewerdine as Priest-in-Charge and Deanery Fresh Expressions Enabler By The Rt. Revd. Mark Davies Bishop of Middleton & The Ven. Mark Ashcroft Archdeacon of Manchester 7.00pm Saturday 6th August 2016 Welcome to St. Chad’s Church, Ladybarn St Chad is thought to have been born around 634 in Northumbria. His name suggests that he had a Celtic background and, according to the Venerable Bede, Chad was educated in the Celtic tradition of Christianity. He became abbot of several monasteries and Bishop of the Northumbrians. He is best remembered today as Bishop of Lichfeld, which he became in 669 and where he died on 2 March 672. St Chad and Lichfeld Cathedral are depicted together in a window in the Lady Chapel and a carving in the chancel. St Hilda, St Oswald, Bede and Caedmon are also depicted in our church’s stained glass windows, reminding us of St Chad’s Northumbrian origins. The Presentation The Archdeacon addresses the Bishop as follows Bishop Mark, as Archdeacon of Manchester after serious consideration and due consultation with others, I present Mark Richard Hewerdine to you and ask you to admit him to this cure of souls. The Archdeacon presents the new priest and briefy introduces Mark. Bishop I thank you for your presentation and for the prayer and discernment that lie behind it. Churchwardens and people of these parishes do you welcome Mark? All We do. Bishop Will you support and uphold Mark? All We will. Bishop Will you share with him in worship and witness, mission and pastoral care? All With the help of God, we will. Bishop Mark, I ask you in the presence of this congregation: do you believe that God has called you to minister in this place? Mark I do. Bishop Are you willing to receive this cure of souls? Mark I am. 4 The Bishop says this preface: The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affrm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making Him known to those in your care? Mark then makes the Declaration of Assent: Mark I, Mark Richard Hewerdine, so affrm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon. Taking the New Testament in the right hand, Mark says: Mark I, Mark Richard Hewerdine, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors, according to law: so help me God. Mark I, Mark Richard Hewerdine, do swear by Almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord Bishop of Manchester and his successors, in all things lawful and honest: so help me God. The Collect The Bishop introduces a period of silent prayer with these or other words Bishop As we license a new priest to this cure of souls, let us pray for him and for all who share in the ministry of this Parish that he may be a faithful priest and true shepherd, and that all may work together for the building up of God’s kingdom in this place. A period of silence for prayer then follows 5 Bishop God our Father, Lord of all the world, we thank you that through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your universal church. Hear our prayer for all your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servant Mark and all who minister in this place the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. All Amen. Mark and the Archdeacon move to their seats. ¶ The Liturgy of the Word New Testament Reading 2 Peter 1:16-19 read by the Lay Chair of Withington Deanery This is the word of the Lord. With their bishop and fellow-ministers, they are to proclaim the word of the Lord, and to watch for the signs of God’s new creation. They are to be messengers, watchmen and stewards of the Lord; they are to teach and to admonish, to feed and provide for his family, to search for his children in the wilderness of this world’s temptations, and to guide them through its confusions, that they may be saved through Christ for ever. Formed by the Word, they are to call their hearers to repentance and to declare in Christ’s name the absolution and forgiveness of their sins. With all God’s people they are to tell the story of God’s love. They are to baptize new disciples in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and to walk with them in the way of Christ, nurturing them in the faith. They are to unfold the scriptures, to preach the word in season and out of season, and to declare the mighty acts of God. They are to preside at the Lord’s table and lead his people in worship, offering with them a spiritual sacrifce of praise and thanksgiving. They are to bless the people in God’s name. They are to resist evil, support the weak, defend the poor, and intercede for all in need. They are to minister to the sick and prepare the dying for their death. Guided by the Spirit, they are to discern and foster the gifts of all God’s people, that the whole Church may be built up in unity and faith. Mark has made the declaration and has taken the oaths required by law in the presence of the Bishop and this congregation. Having heard his intention to fulfl the ministry to which he has been called, I may now license him to serve in this place.
